Integrating aquaculture and fisheries towards a sustainable
regional development
The fishery sector is an integral part of the Baltic Sea coastal
regions and their economies. But not all fish stocks are fished
within natural limits and certain important species are severely
overfished. The management of Baltic Sea fish stocks must
therefore be improved, and alternatives such as aquaculture,
restocking and stock-enhancement (i.e. the release of reared
fish into the marine environment) should be taken into
consideration. It is important to assess which strategies and
technologies are suitable for which fish species and which
part of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The twelve project partners
from Denmark, Norway, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and
Germany will collect, bundle and transfer this knowledge, so
that the aquaculture sector in the Baltic Sea Region can finally
begin to realise its potentials and help lessen the burden on
wild fish stocks.
Regional Level
Utilising fisheries and aquaculture for regional
development and tourism
In many of the partner regions, the fishery sector has
traditionally been important in terms of employment, social
life and regional identity. AQUAFIMA will highlight new
opportunities for fishery-related tourism as a development
opportunity for coastal regions. Stocking measures for
recreational fishing are only one way to attract tourists and
help revitalize the fishery sector.

Analysing the prospects for an increased integration
of stocking/restocking into fisheries management
under the reformed CFP
Evaluating the suitability of stocking/restocking
measures for different Baltic Sea fish species
Developing skills and professional education schemes
for aquaculture management
Developing strategies for integrating aquaculture into
sustainable spatial development
Raising acceptance for farmed fish products and
aquaculture among BSR citizens

Carrying out four pilot case studies for new
management options
The focus will be put on the linkage between fishery
and aquaculture in cross-border coastal areas. An area
management approach has not been established so far in
the Baltic Sea. Case studies will be performed, involving a
small group of fishermen in each. The possibilities for an
area-based fisheries management as well as synergies and
problems between fishery and aquaculture will be analysed.
