Lou Greetings, Parish Business I pray you are well. On Sunday, June 5th, the parish held its Spring General Assembly meeting. Unfortunately, as you can see from the picture below, we did not have a quorum. Our current Parish by-laws state that we must have 50 Stewards in attendance in order to conduct the business of the community, which cannot be done by the Parish Council alone. As a result, we are forced to convene another General Assembly. This General Assembly is scheduled for: Tuesday, June 21st at 7:30pm I know this is a weeknight and it will be difficult, but I pray that at least 50 people, out of the almost 500 steward families, will be able to attend. A letter has been sent to the entire community informing you of the new meeting. Please RSVP if you will be there. In the future, the Parish Council and myself will make every effort to make theses meetings more efficient and take less of your precious and valuable time. God bless you for your commitment to your Church family, and may He continue to be with you always. LAST GENERAL ASSEMBLY With much love and respect, Fr. Lou Pictured above: The attendance of the most recent General Assembly meeting held on Sunday, June 5th. Only 29 stewards were present. From Our Parish Council President - Steve Margarites Happy summer to everyone: Well the weather is getting nice and warm the sun is shining and the flowers are in bloom. That also means there will be graduations for all our kids. I want wish all the grads congrats and well done . Good luck in the future we are all proud of you. The grads I am talking about are from college, HS, middle school, elementary school, Greek school, Greek American Pre school, those who now have graduated to proper age for the Komubaro club, and most importantly all cheese that has now graduated to proper maturity and now can be enjoyed with your favorite topping J I am so happy to introduce this months Past President report. Michael Love has been a fixture at St. Paraskevi for as long as I can remember. If it wasn’t on the PC, it was behind the altar. He was always at the church. He, like many of our veteran Parishioners, have always had St. Paraskevi as a priority in their lives. Mr. Love truly LOVES St. Paraskevi. Please enjoy the words from Mr. Love ….. God Bless you all and EAT MORE CHEESE From Our Past Parish Council President - Michael Love Dear Fellow Parishioners, My name is Michael Love and I am grateful to have served my Orthodox Church and my various parish, St. Paraskevi, in one capacity or another for most of my life, beginning as a young altar boy of 7, back in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt. After a 3 year long search for a home on Long Island , moving from New Jersey, my family, which includes wife Venus and two daughters Mary Anne and Helen, we settled in 1975 in Huntington, New York , because we were informed about the beautiful parish of Saint Paraskevi , which was close by. Immediately we became stewards and active participants in church groups and functions. I became a member of the Parish Council and served as the Secretary for many years prior to being elected Parish Council President in 1987. As president, I became more deeply involved in the upgrades and maintenance of the church, including the beautification of the Grotto Shrine, the Church proper with its many ongoing needs including expansion of the narthex and choir areas as well as necessary changes in the community center. For my long time service to the Church, His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of blessed memory bestowed upon me the Medal of St. Paul. Most significant to me though was that I was blessed to serve in the altar with many of St. Paraskevi’s clergy, starting with Father Manny Vasilakis, through the service of Fr. Dimitri Mourelatos. Each Sunday I was overjoyed to help our young altar boys vest and advise them of protocol and procedures during the Divine Liturgy. In 1996 I was extremely humbled that Archbishop Iakovos tonsured me as an official Reader of the Church. Due to health restrictions, I miss attending Church services and seeing many good friends and loved ones, but St. Paraskevi Church will always remain in my heart and soul as a place of joy, fellowship, spirituality and love. God bless you all. CHRISTOS ANESTI! 3RD ANNUAL MEN WHO COOK DINNER DANCE - MAY 7, 2016 THANK YOU FR. ALITHOS ANESTI! CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN! It is hard to believe that another Paschal season has come and is almost gone, especially since Easter was May 1st this year and Pentecost is yet to come. We hope that you all had a Kali Anastasi and a Kalo Pascha, and that the moms had a Very Happy Mother's Day. Now we can truly say "Haroumeni Anixi", "Happy Spring", and enjoy the sounds of the season. Sing the glory of His name; give to Him glorious praise! Psalm 66:2 As usual we worked hard to prepare for the Paschal holidays, and when the time came we were happy that we had young people join us to sing the beautiful hymns of the season. Lea Andreadis, who has joined us on other occasions, joined us on Palm Sunday and thenagain on Holy Tuesday, along with Megan Shede and Elizabeth Larkin, to sing the Kassiani Hymn. Of course we were delighted as usual to hear that the Junior Choir sang the hymns of the Saturday of Lazarus and Palm Sunday. Previously the Junior Choir had also joined us up in our loft on Sunday, April 17th, so if we sounded extra wonderful you know the reason why! Hopefully we have future senior choir members in the making! the passings of Peter's brother and sister-in-law, George and Georgia. Eonia I Mni Mi! May their memory be eternal! D.A.D. We wish everyone blessings and all the best. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are extended to choir members Peter and Georgia Stavros upon The Good Neighbor Fund was started by a group of friends in 2009. Through private donations and fundraisers we raise money in order to provide financial assistance to individuals and families who are experiencing difficult financial times due to illness, an accident or injury. Since our inception in March of 2009, we have raised several thousand dollars and have helped many families and individuals of varying backgrounds through payments for rent, medicine, surgery, groceries and basic living essentials Each month we would like to spotlight a family or individual who we have helped so you can come to know some of the families and their struggles that are assisted through your support and donations. One of our many cases came to us through Visiting Nurse Service. Patient T is a 27 year old male who is terminally ill with systemic scleroderma , a rare autoimmune disease that causes hardening of the skin and internal organs ( lungs , kidneys , etc.) . He was an athletic young man, working and living in Brooklyn before becoming seriously ill. He now resides with his mother and stepfather and a nurse’s aide who is caring for him. His stepfather , who is also a nurse’s aide, is reduced to working part time due to his own cancer treatment at this time . The Good Neighbor Fund was able to help with this family's PSEG bill and other bills as they struggle to live on one salary. We were also able to help by funding an anti-rejection medication that insurance would not cover at the time . The family is extremely grateful for all the financial support given to them by the Good Neighbor Fund . In turn, the Good Neighbor Fund is thankful to our community here at St. Paraskevi , who make it possible for us to help these families through continued support and donations. If you would like to make a donation to the Good Neighbor Fund please go to our website ;wwwstparaskevi.com/ministry or mail you do- Xristos Anesti! The Greek American Preschool at Saint Paraskevi hopes everyone had a glorious Pascha. Our students learned the letters Xx, Vv and Omega. They read amazing books that tied into their letters such as "Growing Vegetable Soup" by Lois Elhert, "Max Counts in his Chickens" by Rosemary Wells, and "My Mom Has X-ray Vision" by Angela Mcallister. Some other things they learned were parts of the body, rhyming words, flowers and showers, and shape collages. Children decorated eggs, made marshmallow peep kabobs, and did egg counting.
