unique lessons in fire safety throughout the Lake Travis Independent School

LTHS students earn prestigious ‘keys’ at
art event
Lake Travis High School students received a total of 13 Gold and Silver Key awards for their artwork as
part of the Scholastic Regional Art Awards competition held January 24 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School.
Established by Maurice Robinson, founder of Scholastic Books Inc., the art contest is the largest and most
prestigious recognition program and source of scholarships for creative teens in the U.S.
Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. The awards are presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and to present their work to the world through the
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and
scholarship.
Teens in grades 7 through 12, from public, private, or home schools, can apply in 28 categories of art and
writing. Students’ submissions are blindly judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts who look for works
that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or
vision. Winning entries are awarded Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention. Gold Key winners will
advance to compete at the national level. Additionally, a portfolio portion of the competition is open only to
senior art students with multiple pieces of art. The winning portfolio will compete at the national level for 1 of
15 spots worth $10,000 in scholarships.

Hudson Bend, Lake Travis middle schools
announce Geo Bee winners
Canion Hempel, a 7th grade student at Hudson Bend Middle School and Anna Sentmanat, an 8th grade
student at Lake Travis Middle School, won their school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee in
January and are one step closer to a $50,000 college scholarship.
The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the
27th annual National Geographic Bee. The kickoff for this year’s Bee was in November, with thousands of
schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participating. School winners, including Canion and Anna, will now take a written test, and up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then
be eligible to compete in their state Bee March 27.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners
to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 11-13. The first-place national winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society including a subscription to National
Geographic magazine, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National
Geographic. Award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien will moderate the finals on May 13. The program will
air on television.

100 Acts of Kindness
100 Acts of Kindness
of Serving Our Children in Education
Every dollar donated to the Lake Travis Education Foundation has made a
difference. Over $3.5 million in all, your dollars are put to work every day when
the bell rings on each of the nine LTISD campuses. A kindergartner will use
a mini-ipad and be exposed to technology for perhaps the first time. A fifth
grader will learn how to assemble a robotic car and make a motor work. An
aspiring musician, who can’t afford her instrument, will have one.
Your contributions, although measured in dollars, are truly measured in lifechanging moments. We hope you will join us for our 2015 Gala and help us
continue to raise money for the students of Lake Travis ISD.

Everyday Preventive Actions
That Can Help Fight Germs, Like Flu
CDC recommends a three-step approach to fighting the flu.
CDC recommends a three-step approach to fighting influenza (flu).
The first and most important step is to get a flu vaccination each
year. But if you get the flu, there are prescription antiviral drugs that
can treat your illness. Early treatment is especially
important for the elderly, the very young, people with certain chronic health conditions, and pregnant women. Finally, everyday preventive actions may slow the spread of germs that cause
respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu. This flyer
contains information about everyday preventive actions.
How does the flu spread?
Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people
with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with
flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too.
People infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up
to 5-7 days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you
know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Young children, those who are severely ill, and those who
have severely weakened immune systems may be able to infect others for longer than 5-7 days.
What are everyday preventive actions?
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC
recommends that you (or your child) stay home for
at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get
medical care or for other necessities. The fever should
be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
• While sick, limit contact with others as much as
possible to keep from infecting them.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash
after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased hand rub.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
• If an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs,
follow public health advice. This may include
information about how to increase distance
between people and other measures.
CS239139-A
What additional steps can I take at work to help stop the
spread of germs that can cause respiratory illness, like flu?
• Find out about your employer’s plans if an outbreak of flu or
another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations are offered
on-site.
• Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces,
including doorknobs, keyboards, and phones, to help
remove germs.
• Make sure your workplace has an adequate supply of
tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rubs,
and disposable wipes.
• Train others on how to do your job so they can cover for you in case you or a family member gets
sick and you have to stay home.
• If you begin to feel sick while at work, go home as soon as possible.
What additional preventive actions can I take
to protect my child from germs that can cause
respiratory illness, like flu?
• Find out about plans your child’s school, child care
program, or college has if an outbreak of flu or
another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations
are offered on-site.
• Make sure your child’s school, child care program,
or college routinely cleans frequently touched objects
and surfaces, and that they have a good supply of
tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rubs,
and disposable wipes on-site.
• Ask how sick students and staff are separated
from others and who will care for them until they
can go home.
Everyday preventive actions can help slow
the spread of germs that can cause many
different illnesses and may offer some
protection against the flu.
