You may have seen Shiidon’s friendly face at the circulation desk on Saturday afternoons. The derivation of the name Shiidon is Iranian, meaning “first glimmer of light of day.” Shiidon has a unique family background. “I am a 9th generation American on my father’s side coming to Connecticut from England prior to 1649. My mother is from Iran; making me both a founding family and an immigrant at the same time. I can’t say that I stand firmly within one culture or the other, but a blend of both, which is in itself very American.” In fact, Shiidon seems to be something of a cultural expert having grown up living a very nomadic life with his father who was a civil engineer. As a child, Shiidon’s family moved often, living in New Mexico, Missouri, California, Florida, and Chicago. As an adult, Shiidon has lived abroad in China—volunteering as an English as a Second Language teacher at an elementary school. He currently teaches English as a Foreign Language at the college level in Iran online. However, Shiidon is happy to call Lakeway home, having lived the longest consecutive amount of time in Central Texas. When asked how we go so lucky to have him volunteer at Lake Travis Community Library, Shiidon says that his “goal in life is to be of service to others.” While he has always loved books and libraries, the idea of volunteering was inspired by his ancestors who were founding members of the Redwood Library in Rhode Island. “It is the oldest lending library in America, and the oldest library building in continuous use in the country,” said Shiidon. His reading interests are as varied and complex as you’d expect, but he prefers science fiction, history, and biography. Most recently, he read Alan Lightman’s Einstein’s Dreams, praising it as intriguing and well written. Shiidon’s three grown children and beloved granddaughter also live in the Austin area. In his free time, you might find him attending the Opera or the Symphony as a season ticket holder, or volunteering. We are so happy that Shiidon finds such joy in our community as a volunteer, saying that his favorite things about his service here are “seeing the children with stacks of books. In a day when electronics are all the rave, it is rewarding to see that there is still a keen interest in reading among the younger patronsR It is also a joy to speak with them about their schools and the books they are reading. When their faces light up, the world seems a little bit brighter and happier.” Thanks for all your help, Shiidon! Just as your name implies, you make our community a bit brighter!
