September 2014 Lake Travis Community Library (512) 263-2885 • 1938 Lohmans Crossing, Austin, TX 78734 • www.laketravislibrary.org Check out the September Calendar of events! Carol Sikes - Hudson Bend and the Birth of Lake Travis Carol Sikes, author of Hudson Bend and the Birth of Lake Travis, will present a book talk on Tuesday, September 16th at 6pm. A native of Austin, Sikes writes with knowledge and affection about the people who settled along the Texas Colorado River and those who replaced them when the river became a lake. Sikes offers a collection of essays that explores a history forever linked with Hill Country culture, New Deal-era programs and Texas politics. In her work, you will discover the evolution of this cherished region and the courageous people who shaped it, from the Comanche tribes to the construction workers. Join us! Mary Barnes Art Exhibit & Reception Artist Mary Barnes will show her artwork at the library in the month of September. An artist’s reception will be held on Sunday, September 14th from 2pm to 3:30pm in the library meeting room. Barnes has been a life-long lover of the arts. Whether it was winning a poster contest in grade school, working as an interior designer, directing dance programs and workshops with the South Dakota Arts Council, or volunteering in the Artists in the Schools program, Barnes has been active in the creative community all her life. She began to explore artistic expression in painting because it reminded her of her experience in design. “The elements of design and painting are very similar, involving manipulation of color, shapes, patterns and textures,” said Barnes. “Developing a painting is an exciting journey in the exploration of color and design.” Barnes began painting in oil at The Bunkhouse, a ranch for artists, here in the Texas Hill Country. Many of her paintings depict scenes from the landscape and buildings around the ranch, Lake Travis and the Hill Country, as well as scenes from the Texas Coast. She’s also taken an inspirational journey to Venice and Rome, locations which figure prominently in her work. Inspired and influenced by fellow artists, Barnes has been a student in classes and workshops with wellknown artists like Vie Dunn-Harr, Gay Fulkenberry, Rusty Jones, Lesley Rich, Bob Rohm, Don Ward, Charles Sovek, Robert Burridge, and Bobbie Kilpatrick. While she mostly paints for pleasure, she has also been commissioned for specific images. Her paintings have been displayed in The Bunkhouse Gallery, Hill Country Wine and Art Trail Events, Lakeway City Hall, The Wall Street Gallery and Café Lago. Barnes’ exhibit will be celebrated with a reception on Sunday, September 14th from 2pm to 3:30pm. Read more about Mary Barnes’ work at www.marymbarnes.com. A portion of the proceeds of the exhibit sales will benefit the Lake Travis Community Library. Page 2 Lake Travis Community Library Newsletter / September 2014 Children’s Programs Hola-Hola! One of those very gifted and kind individuals is Peter Hitt. As a retired architect, Hitt was instrumental in selecting the site and reviewing the architectural firm bids. His helpful guidance and service on the Building Committee was one of the important keys to success in what we now enjoy as one of the most beautiful architectural buildings in Lakeway. Long before he came to Austin, Peter found success as a graduate of Colgate University, where he studied economics. After graduation, he entered the service as a lieutenant in the Air Force and was stationed in Japan and Korea. When he returned to the United States, he decided to become an architect and attended the School of Architecture at Syracuse University, graduating Cum Laude. His first position in the field of architecture was in Chicago at Perkins & Will. His specialties included designing schools, university buildings and health facilities nationwide. Working his way up to the ladder, Peter became the Senior Vice President in charge of the Chicago office and Director of the Design Department. Eventually, Peter and his wife Betsy moved to Dallas to escape the bitter Chicago winters. In 1985, Peter joined Marshall Erdman & Associates as the Managing Director of the Southwest region designing and building medical facilities until his retirement in 2000. Peter didn’t skip a beat—even in retirement. He became an active member of The Hills Property Owner Association, eventually becoming the President of the Association and taking the lead on designing the park in The Hills community. In the Village of The Hills and in our greater Lakeway community, Peter has left his mark. He will be sorely missed as he plans to return to the Dallas area this week. So, every time you marvel at this incredible space and take pleasure in the open, clean, modern design, think of our friend Peter and wish him well.
