Spring is here! With only about two months of school remaining, the
anticipation of standardized testing, culmination of spring sports, excitement
of graduation, and of course, the enjoyment of a fun summer fills the air.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s Reflections
contest. Get ready for next year’s theme – “What Is Your Story?” Entries will
be due in early November in the following art categories:
dance
choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography
and visual arts. For more information, visit the California State PTA website
at www.capta.org/programs-events/reflections/. Entries will be judged at our
unit level with the possibility of advancing to the California State PTA level to
win Award of Excellence medals and savings bonds.
West High’s PTSA has also been busy selecting scholarship winners,
assisting with vision and hearing screenings, preparing for Blue Ribbon
Week, and planning for the Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Grad Night is also
just around the corner. Seniors, be sure to purchase your Disneyland tickets
by April 15. Your Grad Night package which costs $155 includes a hopper
ticket to Disneyland and California Adventure, transportation, a souvenir
backpack, and other goodies. More information about Grad Night is included
in this newsletter as well as on the Senior Page of our West High website.
Please make sure to turn in both the liability form and permission slip along
with your payment to the principal’s office.
Congratulations also to our West High PTSA Honorary Service Award
recipients, Jill Baker and Lynda Myers, as well as our Very Special Person
Award recipients, Lee Armstrong and Sue Eriksen. We thank not only our
amazing honorees, but everyone in our West High community for making
“West the Best!”

Principal’s Message
“West High students excel in
so many ways; we are
thankful for the teachers and
coaches who run these
programs, and we are proud
of every student who gets
involved and makes a
commitment.”
It’s been an exciting semester for our
students, with more to come. Our girls’
basketball team earned its way to the CIF
Southern Section finals for the third year in
a row and qualified for regional competition.
Amir Alinaghian qualified for a spot at the
State wrestling tournament after the West
High wrestling team won its 8th league
championship in a row. Academic
Decathlon earned a spot at state
championships, with Ann Cortina being
named Coach of the Year and Molly Kim
earning the top score among all LA County
decathletes. Nine West High Speech and
Debate students are taking their skills to
state competition. Three FHA HERO
students qualified for state competition by
taking first or second place in regional
competition.
West
High’s
drama
department is presenting Pippin this year,
and Play Production students are taking
their version of the title song from Working
to the Fullerton Theatre Festival. Our rookie
Science Olympiad team won 1st Place in LA
County regionals and is on its way to State
competition. West High students excel in so
many ways; we are thankful for the teachers
and coaches who run these programs, and
we are proud of every student who gets
involved and makes a commitment.
The West High modernization plan has
been finalized and is under review by the
Division of State Architects. We anticipate
breaking ground for the new auditorium next
September as the first phase of construction
begins. Benefits from Measures T and U are
already being seen with the installation of a
new security camera system throughout
campus. As part of the security upgrades,
perimeter fencing will be repaired or
replaced as needed, and the front of
campus will be enclosed with fencing that
will require visitors to show ID and request
access to campus. We know that
modernization
creates
a
temporary
inconvenience, but the results will be worth
it.
Spring break is just around the corner, and
many students find fourth quarter to be the
most difficult academically. Content may get
more demanding and motivation sometimes
lags, especially for seniors whose post-high
school plans have now been determined.
Please maintain high expectations for your
student, monitor their progress through
Parent iQ, and reach out to teachers if
necessary. Champions finish strong, both in
the classroom and in their extracurricular
activities.
There will be minimal standardized testing
at West High again this year. Please note
the testing calendar in this newsletter for
late start and block schedule days.
Please also note the changes in upcoming
late start days shown in a calendar that was
recently shared with you via e-blast. Next
year West High will begin running tutorial
sessions twice a week during the school
day, and we have made adjustments in our
current year’s schedule to accommodate
planning and a trial run of the tutorial period.
This is an exciting undertaking and will
serve all students, from those struggling to
learn a specific concept to those in
AP/Honors courses who want more time
with their teachers.
Our online silent auction ended up earning
over $8,000 thanks to the support of the
entire West High community. Funds earned
will be earmarked for top quality sound and
video equipment in the gym when it
undergoes modernization.
Have a great spring break, and let’s end the
year strong.
Sincerely,
Pam Metz

Congratulations,
Honorary Service Award Recipients
You truly deserve it!
~ Lee Armstrong ~
~ Sue Eriksen ~
Very Special Person Award
Very Special Person Award
When Lee enters a room, everyone is aware. Not just in
his physical presence, but his boisterous, goodhumored nature draws people in to be part of the fun.
As a small boy – I know, hard to imagine, Lee lived in
New Haven, Connecticut. At the age of 3, his family
moved to the South Bay where Lee eventually sampled
three of the area high schools, Bishop, Mira Costa and
Redondo (long story). After high school, Lee got a part
time job at Garrett. At 26, he was supervising about 50
employees in the computer operations area. Garrett
became Honeywell and Lee is now marking 40 years
with the company. Lee met Gina at Garrett and they
have been together for 25 years. Their older daughter,
Katie, lives in St. Louis. Their son, Nick, is a sophomore
at West. As their kids grew up, Lee thoroughly enjoyed
coaching a myriad of sports – soccer, basketball,
softball, baseball and volleyball. Earlier, during
kindergarten orientation, Lee was approached by the
principal who was encouraging the more “seasoned”
parents to get involved in the school’s Home and
School Association. Since Lee was very “seasoned”, he
decided to become President. Lee served as either
President or Vice President for the next 6 years. Lee
even sacrificed his beard of 32 years when the kids
earned the right to shave it off (along with all his hair).
At West, Lee became involved with the Entertainment
Unit accepting the position of Percussion VP the first
year. Just one month into the school year, Lee was
asked to consider taking on the president position for
the following year. After some high stakes negotiating
with his wife, Gina, a deal was made. The
Entertainment Unit came out ahead as not only did Lee
accept, but Gina also agreed to join. What truly stands
out is Lee’s rapport with the students. He sincerely
cares about them and makes connections through
humor or lending an ear. You’ll know Lee is near when
you hear the “LEEEEEEEEE” or “Lee, Lee, Lee” chant
the kids make whenever they see him. “We love you!”
is the quote expressed by one student and felt by all.
Born and raised right here in Torrance, Sue came
back to West High in 2005 when the drill team
coaching position opened. Sue never lost her West
spirit where she was once Homecoming Queen. Her
daughter, Stefanie, a 2012 West graduate, also came
back to West to choreograph and coach the JV drill
team. Not only did Sue coach drill team and cheer,
she also taught Algebra, Geometry and Work
Experience. In 2010, Sue’s career took on another
dimension after successfully juggling multiple
positions. She was chosen as Student Activities
Director where she oversees all the student-run
activities. Sue has also expanded the West
performance teams and in 2011, the All Male Hip Hop
team was founded. They won first place at the state
competition several years in a row and are currently
undefeated this season! The program has grown and
in 2013, a JV team was created. Likewise, the drill
team program, which placed sweepstakes in parade
twice this season, formed a JV team in 2013. Sue has
gone from coaching one drill team to directing 4 teams
in just 3 short years. Does Sue sound a little busy?
Definitely! Advising ASB, along with the drill and hip
hop teams, requires many extra hours on weekends
and feels like the work is never done. However, Sue
definitely finds the work fulfilling – “to see the students
achieve success and the pride they gain…is worth all
the extra hours.” When she has some spare time in
the summer, she enjoys traveling and doing projects
around the house. Last summer she refinished her
kitchen cabinets on her own. When students were
asked about Sue, the ASB President summed up their
opinions best, “What's so great about her is she is
always willing to try new things.” Students especially
appreciate how Sue listens to them and supports their
ideas – “she is our biggest fan as well as our biggest
motivator.” Another frequently expressed comment
was, “She is always so hard working and goes above
and beyond with everything she does.” To the
students, Sue is more than just an advisor or coach,
“she is like a second mother, a friend.”

~ Jill Baker ~
Honorary Service Award
~ Emi Morimoto~
Golden Oak Service Award
In Lynda’s own words, “I volunteered
where I was needed.” Well, Lynda was
apparently needed very often by our
schools and community! She is an
invaluable forward-thinker, organizer
and selfless giver of her time and
talents. Lynda was raised in a “teeny,
tiny town” in southern Illinois next to
Scott Air Force Base. In 1990, Lynda
moved to California soon after meeting
Jim. They were married two years later.
They have two sons, Taylor James, who
attends Cerritos College, and Patrick, a
junior at West. As her boys participated
in various sports and Cub/Boy Scouts,
Lynda filled many roles as chaperone,
team parent, and super-baker of cookies
and cupcakes!
At the elementary,
middle and high schools, Lynda
contributed in a variety of ways, even
beyond her own boys’ activities. For
example, when help was needed for a
7th grade event, Lynda took the helm,
even though she had no children in the
7th grade.
In addition, Lynda has
frequently chaired events, participated
on the PTSA Board, and volunteered for
classroom activities. At the Torrance
Council level, she served as secretary
and also became involved with its Foster
Care Outreach Program.
At West,
Lynda is a constant and valued
presence. For the PTSA, she scheduled
volunteers for the football snack bar and
coordinated large lunch events. Lynda
assisted with school registration,
volunteered at the front desk, and
worked several snack bars. She is also
involved with the All Sports Booster Club
with fundraisers. For the Entertainment
Unit and Winter Percussion Ensemble,
Lynda is a jack-of-all-trades assisting
with props, uniform fittings, chaperoning
competitions and leading a posse of
graduation lei makers.
In addition,
Lynda serves in the St. Lawrence
Catholic Church Ministry of Hospitality.
With the little time Lynda has left over,
she enjoys “getting my hands in dirt” and
is committed to walking an hour every
day. For Lynda, service and life go
hand-in-hand as she reflects “service is
the rent we pay to be living.” She
wishes to give “special thanks to my
PTA friends – you are my West Coast
family. Be well.”
Before settling in Torrance in 1998 with
her husband Bob, Jill took a worldly path
that helped set the foundation for her
life. Born and raised in Minnesota, she is
the middle of 5 children. She has lived in
Spain, New Zealand, Australia, and
Washington State. During those years,
she attended a small Bible college, set
up a coffee house at a Naval base, took
sailing lessons and enjoyed crewing. Jill
went back to school for her “real” degree
and received her BS in Business at
University of Redlands. Bob took Jill out
to celebrate and surprised Jill with a
marriage proposal. They married in 1993
and after selling their house in Redondo,
moved to Torrance in 1998. They have 2
talented kids. Brigitte, 20, is a junior at
San Jose State studying kinesiology and
president of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.
Nathan, 16, is a junior at West and
involved in water polo, surfing, and golf.
During her kids’ pre-school years, Jill
was room mom and helped with
fundraisers. At Victor, she was Executive
VP and 1st VP of programs. While at Bert
Lynn, she added activities such as
Membership Chair, 8th Grade Promotion
and other activities. At West High, Jill
has been on the PTSA Executive Board
serving in various capacities such as VP
of Membership and Historian, as well as
helping with the Nominating Committee,
Back-To-School Luncheons, Warrior
Welcomes, Staff Appreciations, school
registrations, book check-ins, first day of
school activities, snack bar, and
photographer for West baseball and
water polo teams. In addition, Jill is
involved with Sunday school, president
of gymnastic parent group and team
mom for multiple teams. Jill has also
continued to work out of her home as
bookkeeper for Grapevine Wine Co. for
the last 20 years. Jill can also be found
walking her dog, exercising and
gardening. As her volunteer career is
coming to a close, Jill plans to shift to
working at her family owned BMW
Realty Advisors with her husband Bob.
She
also
plans
to travel,
by
car/plane/train, doesn’t matter. Until
then, Jill loves being with kids and
working with PTSA, sports teams and
WHS staff. We are so thankful of Jill’s
love and spirit of volunteerism.
Emi Morimoto is this year’s West High
School PTSA Golden Oak recipient –
a genuinely deserved honor that
reflects all that Emi has done for our
schools and community. Emi began
her service over 14 years ago as the
Girl Scout Leader for her daughter
Cherie’s troop and continued as an
advisor after her daughter attained
her Gold award. Likewise, after her
son Derek recently earned his Eagle
Scout Award, Emi continues on as a
merit badge counselor. She was also
involved in her daughter’s FOR club
basketball team and with the Food
Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network
(FAAN), which helps people with food
allergies. Cherie is now a sophomore
at USC and Derek is in the 11th grade
at West. Emi’s husband of 22 years,
Myles, is a dentist who has his own
office in Torrance. Emi finds time to
enjoy reading James Patterson's The
Women's Murder Club series, playing
piano, fishing, and hiking. While her
kids were at Anza, she volunteered as
PTSA President and 3rd VP. At
Jefferson, Emi served as PTSA
President,
Corresponding
and
Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and
helped with yearbook, webpages and
GATE. At West, she volunteered as
both the PTSA Newsletter Editor and
Treasurer
before
she
became
President. Emi has also served as the
9th VP (Budget & Finance) on the
Torrance Council PTA. Professionally,
Emi has been an optometrist since
1992,
working
in
an
ophthalmology/optometry
group
practice in Marina del Rey. She is
also part of an optometric team that
travels to Los Angeles County schools
to conduct vision screenings. Emi is
the epitome of a true leader who
inspires with her work ethic,
generosity and competency. Forever
humble, Emi reflects, “…… you know,
it just wasn't me, I was at each of
these places with a group of parents
and others who cared about the kids,
