The fundraiser benefited Walk On’s therapeutic horse riding program. Over 100 people attended and enjoyed country music performed live by StateLine Country Band, pony rides, a petting zoo, and pumpkin carving. Anna of RC Juggles made life size balloon creations of spiders, pumpkins, cats, and even a Ghostbusters backpack. Darlene Caper of DC Leatherworks gave a roping demonstration. She lives in the slums of Delhi, India. Maggie Gruber, a retired teacher from Hough Street School, traveled to India to meet Meher and the plastic surgeon that treated her. In the last six years, around $40,000 has been donated to support the medical treatment and education for Meher. The program has won many awards for youth entrepreneurship, and produced a documentary featuring District 220 schools that was entered for an Emmy awards and has been screened widely. A computer center has been established in the slums of Delhi named after Maggie Your All American First Team in Real Estate Gruber. MCHNB has spent the last two years developing and enhancing its outdoor classroom for students. Susan Lenz, an expert from CFC, gave a presentation devoted to native birds and their wildlife habitats. The students watched birds, learned about characteristics of birds, and observed different types of bird eggs and nets. From Friday, December 6 to Sunday, December 8, Barrington experienced the launch of ChristKindlFest. Inspired by its larger counterpart in downtown Chicago, the Fest featured an array of local area vendors, restaurants and breweries, and entertainment for all ages. Housed in a heated tent, the audience was entertained by everything from rock bands to bell choirs. Joining 250 other sites in America, Barrington High School Band Director, Randy Karon, directed 30 area tuba players in Barrington’s first Merry TubaChristmas. ChristKindlFest also had a Gingerbread House competition in which culinary schools competed for the top prize. In the weeks leading up to the fest, participating merchants displayed entries and had visitors vote to select the winners. Children and their families had the opportunity to pose for photos with reindeers and enjoy a carousel and other rides. The Barrington Rotary Clubs sponsored BHS Interact Club surpassed its goal of preparing 10,000 meals for hungry children in Guatemala. The speaker, Chris Glaser, was a student of Nouwen’s at Yale Divinity School in the late 1970s. Glaser became friends with Nouwen and considered him a spiritual mentor.
