Teaching and reinforcing appropriate behavioral expectations is just as crucial to student success as core subjects. Our students find themselves in many different school settings throughout the year: the classroom, the hallway, the playground, the restroom, the bus, their special classes, field trips, assemblies,, and extra-curricular activities. Though the detailed expectations in each setting may be different, students are expected to demonstrate three behavioral values wherever they are in the school: Be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. We had our PBIS kickoff assemblies this week, during which all students were introduced (or reintroduced) to these values. Pictured above is Mr. Smith and some of our Junior High students getting the crowd pumped up and excited about the year. We discussed various incentives planned to reward students who follow these values. Students who demonstrate respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors can be recognized by any adult in the building with a RAMStar—pictured above. These RAMStars can be used to purchase incentive items or can be used to enter twice-monthly drawings. PBIS is NOT only about earning prizes for good behaviors. Staff members analyze student behavior data to determine what behaviors to focus on, and work to design supports and interventions to help students—both in groups and individually, to adopt better habits. Two behaviors that data has shown us needs to be focused on are hallway behavior in grades K-5 and punctuality in grades 6-8. In order to help students display the correct behaviors, we have two incentive activities scheduled for September 25: Have a Ball if You’re Good in the Hall and The No Tardy Party. Elementary students are working on hallway behavior in order to earn a 40-minute in-school “game break.” Junior High students are working toward the same goal by being sure to come to school on time daily. Each month, we will have a different target behavior, and we are looking forward to a fun year! MUSIC MEETING SEPTEMBER 22 Fourth and fifth grade students were treated to a musical performance by our School District 148 band and choir. The purpose of the performance was to introduce our fourth and fifth graders to our district’s performing groups in hopes that they would like to become part of one of these groups. The district’s performing music department is led by Ms. DuBose and Ms. Fitzpatrick. They will be hosting an informational meeting for parents on September 22 at 7:00 PM here at Roosevelt. We encourage parents and families who have children interested in the Arts to attend. We hope you can come visit us next week.
