Downtown Ventura Partners - Summer 2013 Newsletter JULY 4TH INDEPENDENCE DAY FESTIVITIES Downtown was filled with patriotic buzz this Independence Day. More than 80,000 people flooded Main Street for the annual “Push ‘Em Pull ‘Em’ Parade and July 4 Street Fair, making this one of, if the not the largest, street fair in downtown history. The sun came out, restaurants were packed and retailers reported big sales days. This year’s celebration also marked the 100th birthday of Ventura’s historic City Hall, which drew huge crowds for a series of free tours. There is already talk about making the tours a new July 4 tradition. DOWNTOWN - HARBOR TROLLEY A SUCCESSFUL TROLLEY LAUNCH! The Downtown Ventura – Harbor Trolley has successfully launched! Trolley service began on July 3rd with more than 3,000 riders in its first weeks. This new public transportation system runs from the Amtrak platform/Fairgrounds to the downtown Visitors Center, to South Seaward Avenue and Pierpont Boulevard, to the Rhumb Line Restaurant and the Ventura Harbor Village. The trolley’s route includes the ability to make flag stops along the way at the coastal hotels. To find out where the trolley is, to schedule flag stop pick up or for estimated time of arrival, call the trolley drivers at (805) 827-4444. The Downtown Ventura- Harbor Trolley runs Wednesday through Sunday, from 11am-11pm. The trolley is owned and operated by Downtown Ventura Partners. Operations are funded through a unique partnership including the Ventura Port District, Ventura Harbor Village, Rhumb Line Restaurant, Ventura County Fairgrounds, City of Ventura, with additional support from Watermark Restaurant, NeedThree, Montecito Bank & Trust, City of Ventura Environmental Sustainability, Ventura Water, Island Packers, Andria’s Seafood Restaurant & Market, and Crown Plaza Ventura Beach Hotel. Downtown Ventura Partners - Summer 2013 Newsletter MUSIC WEEK/ART WALK VENTURA MUSIC WEEK & ARTWALK Downtown Ventura kicked summer off with a fun line up of events for the 3rd Annual Ventura Music Week. It took place at 30 venues and showcased 100 local Ventura bands. IIn addition, the Century 10 Downtown Theater sponsored a full-house screening of “Sound City,” a documentary directed by The Foo Fighters front man, David Grohl, about the famous recording studio in Van Nuys that served as the birthplace for many of music’s epic rock and roll recordings. Now in its 20th year, ArtWalk Ventura once again drew huge crowds for the two-day celebration of Ventura’s thriving arts scene NEW BUSINESS PROFILE and many local and diverse artists. New this year was the introduction of PODS Containers, which were donated by PODS Moving & Storage and converted into mini art galleries that were strategically placed throughout downtown and Ventura’s West end. The City Council at its Aug. 5 meeting formally recognized members of the organizing committee, including DVP Director Kevin Clerici. Downtown Ventura Partners - Summer 2013 Newsletter SOLAR POWER BIG BELLIES These solar-powered, compacting waste and recycling units are soon to be installed at more than two dozen downtown locations. They can compact over 150 gallons of waste and recyclable materials, requiring less emptying, while operating on our beautiful Ventura sunshine! The fully enclosed design will also aide in reducing the spread of waste by animals, wind and people digging into the trash cans. Now that DVP will own the units, all funds raised on the front advertising panel will be spent on further improving and beautifying downtown.
