“New” Piano at
Bethany Home Assisted Living
Lan Nelson recently made a generous decision to
donate a beautiful grand piano to Bethany Home
Assisted Living. The donation is in honor of Carole & Ken
Gilman, long time friends and supporters of Bethany
Home. Music has always been a big part of Lan’s life and
he shares his musical talents with the residents of
Bethany Home nearly every day.
The piano was built in 1928 in
Boston by Vose & Sons Corporation

My Dad bought my mom a piano for
her birthday. A few weeks later, I asked
how she was doing with it.
“Oh,” said Dad, “I
persuaded her to
switch to clarinet.”
“Why’s that?” I asked.
“Well,” he said, “with
the clarinet, she can’t
sing!”
Please join us in welcoming
the following residents to
the Bethany Home family.

Cross Training Therapy
Equipment
Bethany Home is excited to announce a new piece of equipment
for the Physical Therapy department: a NuStep T4r recumbent
cross trainer. The Nu-step is a seated stepper that provides a
total body workout by simulating the natural walking motion
while providing upper body exercise as well. According to the
NuStep website, the cross trainer offers “a smooth and natural motion that delivers a low impact, inclusive,
total-body cardiovascular and strengthening workout for virtually all users.” The NuStep can be used with
patients with varying diagnosis including Parkinson's Disease, Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or stroke,
muscular deficiencies, arthritic joints, cardiac and pulmonary disorders.
The advantages the NuStep offers over other types of exercise equipment are numerous. Wendy Johnson,
Physical Therapy Assistant and Rehab Manager for Select Rehab notes, “Its accessibility, ease of use and safety
make it the perfect choice for our facility. We will be able to transfer non-ambulatory patients from their wheelchair to the Nu-step as the seat swivels to the side and arm rests swing away. The seat, arms and legs are all
adjustable to fit all shapes and sizes as well.”
Bethany Home received the machine through the efforts of the Paul “Corky” Malm family. Upon the passing of
Corky’s wife, Deloris, the family designated memorial gifts to Bethany Home. The family was very appreciative of
the services that Deloris received during her time at Bethany Home and wanted to find something that would not
only honor memory, but benefit other residents as well. Corky and Deloris' daughter, Barbara Malm, is the
Executive Director for Physical Therapy Association of America
Foundation. When Wendy suggested the NuStep Cross Trainer, Barbara
contacted the company and they agreed to cover the shipping costs. The
majority of the expenses were covered through donations in memory of
Deloris, and Malm Construction donated the remaining amount. “We
can never thank (Bethany Home) enough for the care, respect and
comfort (Deloris) received while she was a resident.”
Corky was the first resident to try out the new machine under the
supervision of Wendy Johnson. He commented, "There's a lot more to
this machine than I expected. I think it could really help people."

Pastor Bill’s Blessing
But in fact Christ has been raised
from the dead, the first fruits of
those who have died.
1Corinthians 15:20
Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!
I’ve got the earth boxes ready to plant the tomato plants.
Even as I plant those little plants I can imagine, anticipate,
and appreciate the coming time of that first red ripe
scrumptious tomato, the very first fruit signaling much more
fruit to come. It’s the start of a whole 3 or 4 months of
tomato harvest.
The day of Jesus’ resurrection is the day death died. From
now on it’s a whole new age. Jesus is the first of a whole
new crop of resurrected eternally-alive people. Live the
resurrected life! We are an Easter people, Alleluia!
Peace in the Lord,
Pastor Bill
