Bethany Home Employee
Receives Scholarship
Libby
Hollingshead
has had a
passion for
helping others for as
long as she
can remember. Long before high
school, Libby volunteered at Bethany
Home, helping with evening activities,
the sundowner’s program and visiting
with residents. When Libby turned 16
she took a part time position, earned
her CNA then CMA and worked full
and part time at Bethany Home until
graduating from Smoky Valley High
School earlier this spring.
In the fall of 2014, Libby was in a car
accident that resulted in working with
physical therapy for four months. “I
loved what Mark, my physical therapist, did and knew I wanted to go into
that,” says Libby. She had already considered a career in speech therapy or
a related field, so the shift to physical
therapy was an easy one.
Andrea Johnson, Human Resources
Director for Bethany Home, suggested
Libby apply for the ASTRA scholarship
through Leading Age Kansas. “She has
a very caring heart and loves helping
others,” notes Andrea. “She has a true
love for the elderly and she will definitely be an asset to health care.”
ASTRA, the Aging Services Transformation Alliance, was formed in 1988
to conduct research, produce infor-
mation and training to increase the
understanding of aging, and to improve the quality of care and services
for older Kansans. As the recipient of
grant funds from across the nation,
ASTRA has provided cutting edge
training to thousands of aging services
professionals which have resulted in
measurable improvement and change
in long term care practice around the
state. The mission of ASTRA is ‘To advance the health and well-being of
older adults by providing research,
education, training and the dissemination of information for providers of
long-term supports and services.’
Their vision is ‘To be a knowledge generator and transformational agent for
aging services.’
There is a growing demand for aging
services. The ability to provide quality
services to older Kansans in a compassionate and supportive environment is
highly dependent on a committed and
dedicated work force. ASTRA provides scholarships for the purpose of
attracting and retaining talent in the
field of nonprofit aging services. Funding for the scholarship program comes
from the generous support of members, valued business partners and
any other individual or organization
interested in advancing the health and
wellbeing of older Kansans.
Libby Hollingshead was one of five
scholarships awarded this year to individuals seeking to expand their educa-
tion to support aging services. ASTRA
is specifically interested in providing
scholarships to individuals seeking to
advance their learning in the areas
including but not limited to: Certified
Medication Aid, Social Services, Therapy, Adult Care Home Operator, or other forms of post-secondary education.
To be eligible, the applicant must be
employed by a LeadingAge Kansas
member and agree to/meet the following: be employed by the member
for at least one year, either full or part
time, demonstrate a commitment to
serving older Kansans, and be enrolled
in an accredited school or program.
Libby is currently attending Cloud
County Community College for two
years and plans to transfer to
Hutchinson Community College for
the Physical Therapy Assistant program. She looks forward to continuing
to work for Bethany Home on a parttime basis during holiday and school
breaks. Libby feels very blessed to
have received the ASTRA scholarship.
“I would like to thank Andrea Johnson,
and Kris Erickson for the opportunity
to partake, and to all my family and
friends that have helped guide me to
this point of my life.”
Libby is the daughter of Maxine
Bloomberg also an employee of Bethany Home and the late Danny Hollingshead.

Volume 4, Issue 1
A man was walking in the city when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby looking bum who
asked him for a few dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted five dollars and asked, “If I give
you this money, will you use it to buy whiskey?”
“No,” the man stated, “I stopped drinking years ago.”
“Will you use it to gamble?”
“I don’t gamble. I need everything I can get just to stay alive.”
“Will you spend it for green fees at the golf course?”
“Are you NUTS!? I haven’t played golf in over 20 years!”
The man said, “Well, I’m not going to give you $5. Instead, I’m going to take you to
my home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.”
The bum was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious for doing that? I know I’m dirty
and I probably smell pretty bad.”
The man replied, “That’s okay. I just want her to see what a man looks like who has
given up drinking, gambling and golf!”

Pastor Bill’s Blessing
These words from Ephesians are being used throughout the summer and fall in our worship as part of the
absolution (words of forgiveness) spoken by the pastor
to those gathered for worship. “In Christ you are a
new creation: your sins are taken away and you are
made new.” So how does one who is forgiven and
made new act? Be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven
you. May your neighbor see Jesus in you.
Peace in the Lord,
Pastor Bill
