Congress has confirmed its commitment to the fight against u n d e r a g e drinking. Its numerous supporters include the Beer Institute, the Brewers Association, the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, the Wine Institute and others. Beer distributors play a vital role in the statebased regulatory structure. The distribution system provides a transparent and accountable chain of custody in the sale of beer, making it easier to enforce state laws and local ordinances. The system also regulates retail sales, ensuring that retailers hold the appropriate license, do not sell to those under the legal drinking age, pay state and local taxes, and generally comply with state and local alcohol beverage laws. ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ effective underage-driving prevention measures that we already implement and support. It also acknowledges the important role state-based regulation of alcohol beverages plays in keeping alcohol out of the hands of youth. “The beer industry is serious about the fight against underage drinking,” said NBWA President Craig Purser. “While much progress has been made due to the efforts of parents, teachers, law enforcement and others, we can and must do more. The STOP Underage Drinking Act will go a long way in providing the necessary resources to bolster these efforts and ensure states retain appropriate control over alcohol beverages within their borders.” Anheuser-Busch President and CEO August A.
