2015 Program highlights
It seems that each year has its own theme of sorts. As some of you may recall, my first full year back
in the saddle here was 2014. Originally, I thought our theme for the year was “transition”. It seemed
fitting as board, staff, and I settled into our rhythms. As I write today, however, and consider 2015’s
“theme”, I realize that 2014 was not a year of transition at all. Instead, it was a year to put fuel into the
rocket ship. I know this because in 2015, we seemed to blast off! What a great year and one full of
comradery, accomplishment, and purpose. I’m thankful to my staff, our board, and our donors.
Together, we make a team that accomplishes great things! The rocket ship of prevention is truly going
strong and I look forward to seeing what we can do together in 2016!—Tina Bartleson, Executive Director
And
The
Winners
Are….
Our own Shemika Roberts (Lead Parent Aide) was
recognized as the 2015 National Parent Aide of the
Year by the National Exchange Club and its Parent
Aide network!
Shemika has faithfully served as a Parent Aide since
2009. She feels “that all people have the potential to
be wonderful parents but sometimes need help
facing the challenges that life throws in their path”.
We appreciate all you do for children and families!
Congratulations to Gin Gunther—our 2015 Katie
Dempsey Star Award recipient. A member of the
Family Resource Board of Directors since 2006, Gin
has provided leadership in many areas. Gin states,
“I’m so glad to be a part of an organization that
helps give children hope”. (L to R: Tina Bartleson,
Gin Gunther, Rep. Katie Dempsey)
Because of your support, many families have “happy endings” as they graduate from
our Parent Aide program. This is the story of one family served in 2015. With an infant
child and a history of neglect in their own childhoods, this young mom and dad
confessed to being uncertain about how to take care of their little one. Dad worked two
jobs to make ends meet while Mom felt overwhelmed—and alone. She wasn’t sure how
much to feed the baby, feared “spoiling” him if she picked him up when he cried, and the
family had trouble making ends meet. The situation was one that could lead to abuse or
neglect without a Parent Aide. Through weekly (and sometimes twice weekly) home
visits, this family learned how to care for their infant’s basic needs, discovered ways to
talk with and engage their child, created a workable family budget, developed better
ways to manage stress, established a family routine, and became familiar with what to
expect as their child grows. Most importantly, this family discovered they are not alone.
This family successfully graduated from our program and we know that their “story”
ended happily—-they are now a stronger family. What might their story have been had
YOU not enabled us to provide support, information, and encouragement? It’s something to think about.
Thanks for helping us reach families and prevent child abuse!

Other program highlights:

Volunteer Parent Aide Training—Eight participants completed Volunteer Parent Aide training in October 2015. Volunteering as a Parent Aide is very time-intensive commitment but two participants decided that NOW is their time. We are
pleased to have Amy Mendes and Marti Robles on our volunteer team!

Model Designation—We were thrilled when the Exchange Parent Aide model was named by Promoting Safe & Stable Families/Georgia DHR as an effective model for reducing recurrence of abuse and neglect in families with previous abuse
confirmations.

Re-Accreditation: We achieved Re-Accreditation through National Exchange Club and are pleased to comply with national
standards in the areas of Mission, Financial Resource Planning/Management, Human Resources, Networking, Organization,
Program, and Evaluation.

Why the Exchange Parent Aide model?
Visiting with families in their homes means we can tailor our services to meet individual situations. Every family is
different!

Weekly visits help parents and Parent Aide form trust, enabling parents
to more readily receive—and act on recommendations.

Services are practical and skill-strengthening so that parents can continue to grow after graduating from our program.
