Assisted Dying Panel
Michael Harvey is Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy, Planning and
Performance Monitoring, Department of Health and Community Services, a
position to which he was appointed in August 2014. He previously served as
Executive Director (Planning and Coordination) in Cabinet Secretariat from
2012. He joined the Provincial Government in 2006 with Intergovernmental
Affairs where he worked for five years in progressively senior positions. He has
also worked for the Department of Child, Youth and Family services as Director responsible for
Policy and Strategic Planning. Prior to joining government, Mr. Harvey was a university
instructor in political science, including as a lecturer at the University of Guelph and an
instructor at the University of Toronto.
Mr. Harvey holds a Master of Arts, Political Studies, from Queen’s University, and a Bachelor of
Arts (Honours) from Memorial University.
Joelle Walker is the Director of Public Affairs for the Canadian Pharmacists
Association. In this role, Joelle leads the Association’s advocacy initiatives
with key decision makers and stakeholder, by increasing the profile and
reputation of the profession and advancing specific public policy issues.
Joelle has over 10 years of advocacy experience in law and government
relations, previously working on the Canadian Cancer Society’s national advocacy agenda.
Joelle has a Bachelors of Political Science and an LLB from the University of Ottawa.
Margot Priddle R.Ph., B. Comm.
Margot is the Registrar of the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board. A
pharmacist with 30 years of experience, she has practiced in community,
hospital, geriatric care, research and eHealth. In her current role as a health
regulator Margot is responsible for oversight and leadership of the practice of
pharmacy in the province.
Glenda Power is the Executive Director of the Pharmacists’ Association of
Newfoundland and Labrador, where her responsibilities include government
relations, strategic planning, media relations, social media engagement and
more. Prior to joining PANL, she spent several years in senior roles within the
Provincial Government in strategic communications. Glenda’s experience also
includes ten years as a Dale Carnegie trainer and motivational speaker. Catch

Natural Products
Dr. Johnson completed her biochemistry degree at Memorial University of
Newfoundland and her medical training at the Canadian College of
Naturopathic Medicine, in Toronto. She is regarded as an expert in the field of
natural health products and fitness. Dr. Johnson has trained hundreds of
healthcare practitioners across Canada and the United States about natural
health product and integration of pharmacological and natural therapies. She
is a licensed Naturopathic doctor and a regular television guest across Canada
and the United States. Dr. Johnson has written for many well respected magazines in pursuit of
educating the public about the safe and effective uses of complementary medicine.

Diagnosis and Management of Musculoskeletal conditions. What every
clinician should know about joint and muscle pain.
Dr. Peter Kim BSc, DC, FCCS(c) is a magna cum laude graduate of the Canadian
Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Kim completed
his Doctor of Chiropractic degree after receiving his BSc from the University of
Toronto. He is a Fellow of the College Chiropractic Sciences (FCCS) and worked
as a clinician at CMCC for 19 years until he assumed the role of Director of
Clinical Education and Patient Care. Dr. Kim currently holds the position of
Director of Development and Clinic Advancement.
Dr. Kim has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, ranging from clinical cases
to back pain prevention, specifically in fire fighters. He has a special interest in back prevention
programs and continues to practice privately three days per week, while maintaining his fulltime role at CMCC.
Learning Objectives:
Following this session, participants should possess the knowledge to
- identify common conditions of the joints and muscles
- apply common ortho/neuro tests and other clinical methods of diagnosis to accurately
diagnose patients with joint and muscle pain
- apply evidence based treatments for common joint and muscle conditions
- recognize conditions that require referral for further investigation or specialized treatment
including identification of red and yellow flags as they relate to the musculoskeletal system.
Prescribing Opioids: A Truly Inter-professional Activity
Dr. Peter MacDougall is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Pain
Management at the University of Ottawa. He is a staff anesthesiologist and
Director of Pain Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital. He has research interests in
development of networks between community physicians and specialists and
understanding the risks and benefits of prescribing controlled substances. He is
Director of the Atlantic Mentorship Network – Pain and Addiction and codeveloper of The Prescribing Course: Safe Opioid Prescribing. In his spare time
he can be found at hockey rinks, football fields or dance competitions cheering for his two
children.

opioid

Medical Marijuana
Dr. Andrea Burry is the Medical Director of Trauma Healing Centers.
Dr. Burry completed her Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Psychology
at the University of Western Ontario and both her Masters of Science and
Medical Degree at the University of Toronto. Dr. Burry moved to New
Brunswick in 2006 after completing her residency in Family Medicine at
Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Over the course of her practice, Dr. Burry
has developed interests in Occupational Medicine and most recently in medical cannabis and
the role that it can play in treating conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic
pain.
Dr. Burry currently divides her time between occupational medicine in both the public and
private sector and Trauma Healing Centers, where she has both clinical and administrative roles.

- Review Prescription Cannabinoids and herbal cannabis availability in Canada
- Review current process for obtaining herbal cannabis in Canada
- Review common conditions for which cannabinoids are prescribed

Drug-induced QT Prolongation: Practical tips for the front-line
pharmacist
Lorie Carter graduated from MUN School of Pharmacy in 2006. She
worked in Sylvan Lake, Alberta for 5 years in a mixed practice
consisting of retail pharmacy, longterm care, and clinical services as a
Primary Care Network pharmacist. She then completed a Hospital
Pharmacy Residency with Alberta Health Services in Edmonton in
2012, and after working for a year at the Burin Hospital, returned to St. John's. She currently
works with Eastern Health and has a clinical practice in Internal Medicine and Respirology at the
Health Sciences Centre. She lives in Bay Bulls with her husband and 10-month-old son.
Learning Objectives:
- Review cardiac conduction, QT-interval prolongation, and torsades de pointes
- Understand the patient risk factors associated with QT prolongation and torsades de pointes
- Be able to use drug information and drug interaction resources to determine the risk of QT
prolongation with a single medication, or a combination of medications
- Be able to assess a patient's medication profile to determine risk of QT prolongation, and to
recommend appropriate management and/or monitoring.
PharmD Update: Exploring ideas for Memorial’s PharmD for Working
Professionals
Dr. Lisa Bishop is a pharmacist who has experience in community,
hospital and family practice settings. She obtained a Bachelor of
Science in Pharmacy from Memorial University in 1995, completed a
Hospital Pharmacy Residency program in Hamilton, Ontario in 1998,
and obtained a PharmD degree through the University of Colorado in
2007. Dr. Bishop is an associate professor with the School of Pharmacy and was the entry-topractice PharmD program director. She is currently the Interim Dean for the School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Cathy Balsom is a pharmacist who worked in community pharmacy before
coming to work with Memorial. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in
Pharmacy from Memorial University in 2011, and obtained a PharmD degree
through the University of Florida this past Spring of 2016. Dr. Balsom is the
Coordinator of the PharmD for Working Professionals program at Memorial
School of Pharmacy, a Clinical Pharmacist at the MTS Clinic, and a part-time
community pharmacist.

- Provide an update on the implementation of the Entry to Practice PharmD program
- Explain the status of PharmD programs across the country.
- Describe the structure of Memorial’s proposed PharmD for Working Professionals Program
- Discuss the impact of the proposed practice experiences on the pharmacy community
- Explore ideas for student activities that will enhance the student experience and enhance
practice
Herpes Zoster
Ian D. R. LANDELLS, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Ian D. R. Landells, MD, FRCPC graduated from Memorial University of
Newfoundland Medical School, St. John’s, NL, Canada in 1988. Practiced two years
Family Medicine in St. John’s, NL, then went on to study Paediatric Medicine at
Memorial University, Dermatology at the University of British Columbia and
fellowship training in Pediatric Dermatology at Northwestern University and Children’s
Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Landells has practiced Adult and Pediatric Dermatology in St.
John’s since 1996. He has held various roles throughout his career:
- President 2010-2011 - Canadian Dermatology Association
- Past Vice-President, Secretary and Regional Director – Canadian Dermatology Association.
- Division Chief Dermatology - Eastern Health, St. John’s, NL, Canada

- Discuss the pathogenesis & clinical consequences of pain caused by herpes zoster (HZ)
- Answer questions from patients and their families about the efficacy, safety and value of the
HZ vaccine

and epidemiological studies
Vascular Surgery and Considerations in Risks Associated with Peripheral
Arterial Disease
Darryl Burke graduated from the School of Pharmacy at MUN in 2000. He
worked in retail pharmacy for 8 years before taking a position as clinical
pharmacist with Eastern Health in 2008. Initially in the area of infectious
diseases and for the last six years with vascular surgery, Mr. Burke has
spoken at several pharmacy and nursing in-services, as well as the
Canadian Society of Vascular Nurses conference. His clinical interests also
include anticoagulation, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and infectious diseases.

Transgender Health: A Crash Course
Mari-Lynne Sinnott is a two-time graduate of Memorial University. In
2009 she was a proud recipient of a Bachelor of Arts with honours.
From there she entered Memorial’s Medical School, and graduated
in 2009 with her MD. She finished her family medicine residency in
June 2015, and locumed in rural Newfoundland and the remote
Northwest Territories. She has now happily moved back to St. John’s
permanently to open a clinic in downtown St. John’s that focuses on
women’s health and LGBTQ health and to also work in conjunction with Eastern Health and the
provincial government on the Downtown Healthcare Collaborative: a network of clinics that
work within community organizations to provide inclusive and complete primary care to the
marginalized populations of the city. In addition to all of this, she holds a part-time faculty
position with the Family Medicine Department at Memorial University and is involved in
teaching both medical students and residents.
