Eagletter Page 1 MAY 2015 Dr. Gary Brashear, Superintendent May is Busy! Spring is here and the student’s minds begin to wander from academics to other things on their mind. As parents, we need to redirect their focus back onto the school work for one more month. The final weeks’ grades can make a difference in their final grades. Final exams are also on the horizon for many students. This Saturday is the DW prom. It will be held at the Farmer City Country Club, with post-prom being held at the high school. As a former EMT (emergency medical technician), I have seen the different kinds of trouble kids can get into on prom night. Post-prom gives them a place to go, things to do, all under adult supervision. Please support this effort and encourage your high school age child to attend. They do not have to attend prom to attend post-prom. Students should arrive at the high school by 11:00 p.m. to be included in the festivities. Page 4 Eagletter LIBRARY: Wow, this year has flown! It is hard to believe we are preparing for the end of the year! With that being said, it is important to make sure that library books are returned before the last week of school. Any student who has a missing or unreturned library book will not be able to receive their report card unl it is brought back or paid for if the book is lost or damaged. I will be sending home notes towards the end of May to students whom this will effect. Students enjoyed reading the novels so much last month in library that I decided to connue with the novels for the older grades. We are connuing to work on predicons, summarizing and making connecons to the stories we are reading. Here are the tles read by each class: 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Some tles I have chosen to read the younger grades this month (Pre-K through 1st) are: Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse, There’s Something in the Ac, Curious George Goes to the Aquarium, Pet for Fly Guy and Clark the Shark. All of these tles encourage students to use their imaginaon and teach a valuable moral lesson. Before beginning each tle, we discuss as a class whether the book would fall into the ficon or nonficon category. I’m so proud of the growth the younger students have shown over the course of the year and look forward to helping them connue on their path to independent reading! LBOOK CLUB: We wrapped up Book Club for 3rd quarter last week. The 4/5 Book Club put on a Reader’s Theater performance about Jackie Robinson for their 4/5 Book Club performing Jackie Robinson classes. This was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about a man who influenced change, not only in the game of baseball, but in our world! The last secon of Book Club will be starng the first week of May. This will only be a 4 week secon and the topic for the month will be puppets. Students will be creang their own puppets using paper bags and art supplies as well as authoring puppet plays. This is a great opportunity for students to showcase their creavity! COMPUTER LAB: Each grade level has made incredible progress this year with their computer skills. I’m so proud of all the hard work put in by the students. Over the course of the year students have increased their typing speed and accuracy, learned how to navigate the Internet while conducng research, operate basic computer equipment and use programs in Microso< Office to present informaon. Look for end of the year projects to be displayed in the hallway towards the end of the month! PARCC: The End of the Year PARCC assessments will be held May 4-15th. Students did a great job during our spring tesng window and I’m sure they will give their best effort once again to demonstrate the progress they have made throughout the year! Eagletter Page 5 PrePre-K News During the month of April, Little Miracles Pre-K studied plants. We learned plants are living things which need soil, water, and sunlight to grow and each student planted a “Garden in a Glove”. We were very excited when the plants began to grow! In addition, we learned fruits and vegetables are plants. We compared several fruits by weighing and measuring them. Finally, we tasted a variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, avocado, and star fruit. Everyone was very brave and tasted several things. Page 6 Eagletter P.I.E.
