FLOORBALL BACKGROUND
Floorball Origins
•
Floorball is a fast-paced, exciting, safe and low-cost type of co-ed indoor
hockey. It resembles floor hockey or ball hockey but is played with lightweight, plastic composite sticks, a whiffle ball and rules that promote safety
& skill.
•
Floorball is extremely popular in Europe and has over 2 million players in 35
countries.
•
Floorball is an excellent off-ice training sport for hockey players (can practice
your stickhandling, passing & shooting skills anywhere at any time. Hockey
players will love the "feel" of the stick and the soft hands required to control
the ball.
•
Teams can get together to play in a gym, outdoors or in the rink when the ice
is out during the summer months.
3
FLOORBALL BACKGROUND
•
The sport is huge in Europe & is taking off in Ontario (a significant number of
NHLers & OHL players currently use this use as off-ice training). In addition,
the sport is now well underway in the school system & is being formally
introduced to school curriculum and several tournaments in place.
•
School tournaments are currently run in school curriculum, organizations
exist in the GTA, very competitive Elite teams formed in GTA, Team Canada
tournament mulitiple years (North America) and National Team (U19 & senior
level) competes in Europe
•
NHL stars such as Henrik and Daniel Sedin grew up playing this European
version of hockey, the second-ranked sport behind soccer in Sweden.
•
It’s a limited-contact sport, which means fewer injuries, and it’s relatively
inexpensive to buy equipment and rent facilities (specifically appealing for
families with several boys/girls in active sports)

FLOORBALL BACKGROUND
• Floorball has achieved recognition from the International
Olympic Committee, with potential to become an addition to the
Olympic Games as soon as 2020 (floor hockey is not currently
recognized).

FLOORBALL RULES & REFEREE TRAINING
•
Sticks are made of composite material with a unique cross-hatch blade that

Floorball rules are more formalized as a result of international play, and it
parallels soccer in its emphasis on non-contact, while floor hockey rules vary
according to league.
•
No offsides or icing.
•
Free hits or shots of the ball (like free kicks in soccer) for minor offences.
•
No sticks above the waist, for safety.
•
Incidental shoulder-to-shoulder contact allowed, but no bodychecking,
complete different level of control with respect to hockey
•
Stick-on-body contact and stick-on-stick contact not permitted.

ROLLOUT PLAN
•
The Markham Hockey association has rolled Floorball into their Hockey venue
and started a very successful league. The league was rolled out with the key
involvement from Steve Stamkos, Cody Hodgson, Cameron Gaunce & Brenden
Gaunce ….. (and they all play the sport).
•
Plan is to perform kickoff of Floorball within RHHA similar to Markham rollout rollout following start of Hockey (possible early bird tournament), obtain NHL
player and OHL player support.
•
Make indoor facilities available (permits in work) for set drop in play structure for
organized play (similar structure now running in GTA & surrounding regions)
•
Formal RHHA league rollout in early Spring 2013
•
Integrated league with existing info-structure offered by GrassRoots Floorball to
be reviewed/agreed
•
League cost to be determined
•
League Floorball Manual is currently under final construction (modeled around
other centers)
