The stories of William Rees, the founder of Queenstown, and the gold
rush of the 1860’s that populated the region with thousands of people are
well known. But you need to dig pretty deep to find out about early Maori
movements around the Wakatipu in pre-European times. On the 175th
Anniversary of the signing of New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of
Waitangi, last weekend, it would have been good to have seen Ngai Tahu join
celebrations in Queenstown Gardens to share their story.
But as has been the case for quite some time when it comes to cultural
enrichment in the Wakatipu, the Tangata Whenua of this land, the original
people were absent. Again it fell on non-Ngai Tahu residents like the Webster
family and friends known as the Wakatipu Whanau to put a little Maori culture
into the day for the people of the Wakatipu.
Unfortunately the iwi leaders from the dominant South Island tribe, Ngai Tahu,
seem more interested in appearing on TV up north and putting claim to the life
blood of humanity – Water. Ngai Tahu Holdings is a very big highly successful
business. So to hear Iwi leader Mark Solomon talk of wanting to monetize
Maori claims to water is no surprise. That’s business, and if he is correct that
Maori have the right to charge New Zealanders to use water, then Ngai Tahu,
with claim over the South Islands great lakes and rivers have an awful lot to
gain. My concern however is not with Maori rights and business practises, it’s
the apparent lack of cultural responsibility shown by Ngai Tahu for our region.

Mark Solomon’s biography on the Ngai Tahu website (www.ngaitahu.iwi.nz)
says “My dream for our people is simple: to be culturally strong, healthy and
happy”. Noble words and most of us share that dream for ourselves, our
families and our children’s children. Mr Solomon goes on to say that achieving
this dream is complex. I agree, to achieve such a nirvana is very complex
but a good starting point would be to at least contribute something towards
our Waitangi Day celebrations as any good caring inclusive host, or Tangata
Whenua would.
I want to know more about the life of the Ngai Tahu people who frequented
this region before Europeans arrived. There is a fascinating history in the Ngai
Tahu story, and if we are to get closer to Mark Solomon’s dream, I’d like to
see Ngai Tahu get a little more involved in the Wakatipu on a cultural level like
at our Waitangi Day celebrations. At the moment they seem to be acting like
absentee landlords, which is contradictory for the Tangata Whenua. Getting
that balance right between their commercial interests and cultural interests in
the Wakatipu in my opinion is what will pave the best way forward for us all,
and lead to the fulfilment of Mark Solomon’s dream.

hospitaility. I am sick and tired of hearing them moan

out that vegetables and other groceries cost more
than they do wherever they come from.
What I don’t understand is these same people are
seen out night after night drinking, smoking and
eating till closing time. It’s not difficult to understand
why they never have any money and look like
characters from a vampire movie. I spoke to one
young bartender the other day and he says some
weeks he doesn’t get any pay as his bar tab is bigger
than his pay packet.
A lot of these people are young kids who don’t
really know how to look after themselves and
don’t understand the concept of saving. Maybe
Queenstown Resort College could do an
‘Introduction to Working in Queenstown’ course to
help some of these people.
There are some hospo people with some serious
health problems.

The forecast for traffic in the Wakatipu is looking
dire. Don’t even get me started on downtown traffic.
There are two big projects happening in the Frankton
Flats with 5 Mile and the Remarkable Park expansion
for Pak’n’Save. Even before these open the traffic
is a nightmare and it seems little is being done to
mitigate this. Sure there is the new bypass through
Glenda Drive but it still doesn’t deal with the traffic
at the Frankton roundabout and down to the airport.
What is going to happen in 5 years or 10 years or 20
years? This needs to be one of the main priorities
before any thought is given to nice to have (or
is it!) things like convention centres and high rise
development which will all put even greater strain on
the transport infrastructure.
It seems that everyone is talking about it and nothing
is being done. What also needs to be addressed is
Frankton Road as this is just becoming busier and
busier. It is no wonder that the public transport
service isn’t as reliable as it should be – who could
run any sort of timetable with the traffic the way it is.

work then home again I would only be able to
work 6 hours a day between taking my kids to
pre-school and picking them up again, making
me un-employable in my field of work.

how nobody understands what it like to have
to make sensible decisions while only being

central Queenstown area looking for a free or
reasonable priced car park that someone on
$14.50 per hour could afford.
