Kiwis are the friendliest people in the world! I first heard that sentence maybe ten
years ago, and a few more times, mostly from people that travel a lot. And I kept it in
the back of my head. Then I started traveling myself, experiencing the hospitality of the
people all around the world, firsthand. I hitchhiked, slept in the homes of strangers, lived
like a local. And whenever I thought of that sentence about friendliness of Kiwis, I was,
with every country travelled, a bit more skeptical - how could anyone be friendlier than
people from Iran, Bangladesh, Malawi, South America?
After traveling for five years on five different continents, I finally came to New Zealand.
Immigration officers smiled and welcomed me to the country. The lady in the bus from
the airport gave me a hand with the luggage. A bottle of red wine and a welcome note
was waiting for me in a house I found via home exchange. Unknown people were
saying ‘hi’ on the streets. When I moved to Queenstown, everything was the same. I
waited three minutes while hitchhiking from Lake Hayes to Frankton. The driver even
went out of his way to drive me to the exact address where I was going. Passers-by
were smiling at me when I made eye contact. Everyone seemed to have a little bit of
their time to notice you. To help you out, if needed.
But then everybody started ranting about tourist drivers. I felt the scent of rage in the air.
A little bit of racism too. I was hearing stories of people snatching the rental car keys,
throwing things on them from their cars, cutting them off. It reminded me of India and
the way the angry mob deals with bad drivers. The skepticism about the friendliness of
Kiwis from years ago came back, big time. Kiwis were not that friendly after all. They
were probably just taught to behave nicely, to have a smile on their faces and be polite
all the time.

I knew it was all too good to be true. Like most of my relationships which started with me
being overly nice, showing myself in the best way possible. I wanted my girlfriends to
like me, or better yet, to love me. Later on, all of those relationships fell apart, because
I was pretending to be someone who I’m not. Like Kiwis did. But all of a sudden, there
was a huge turn. More and more people were coming out, telling everyone to calm
down. Showing them the other side of the story. Reminding their fellow citizens that they
live in a tourist city and that most of them were tourists or travelers themselves. That
they once weren’t able to adjust to bicycle chaos in Amsterdam, crossing the street in
Bangkok or crazy traffic rules in Delhi, especially right after getting off the airplane.
Yes, something needs to be done for the safety of everyone involved, but that the
energy and rage focused on tourists was not productive at all - on the contrary. They
should discuss and resolve the matter in the most civilised way possible. Because that
is the best way possible. After a few days, I was again in love with Kiwis. Even more
now, when I saw that they are not perfect. That they also have their issues, apart from
how their flag will look like. That they are, at the end of the day, humans. But humane
humans.

Going, Going, Gone!
There is some severe shortage of accommodation
here in the wonderful QT! Yet from what I’ve
seen from my struggle is that the majority of people
looking are in work!
What’s worse is the “interview process” to get a
room, what do you do for fun? Oh, I like S&M,
and I need somewhere to store my vintage collection
of whips! No, I just want a place to rest me head,
work and enjoy this incredible place!
I’ve been here 6 months, planning on spending
winter here, but the text tennis games are driving
me semi insane. Game, set and match happens
far to frequently, “we found someone else”! I’m in
my opinion the Rodger Federer of flatmates, clean,
respectful, and good fun! Oh I’m also a Lannister
when I comes to what I owe... I always pay my
debts.
QT people stop with the intimidation, there are very
few people who would be a bad housemate, get
bonds and set the rules straight up! Easy!
The horror stories I’ve seen on FB are when people
get lapse and rely on verbal contracts!
PS, I’m not into bondage.
A very stressed Federer
I recently counted 80 vehicles parked on the side of
the road from between the Bus Dept to the Kawarau
Bridge. Some vehicles sit there for over a week,
one person who’s vehicle I recognised, sat there for
two weeks. This is a person that works in a job that
gives you parking and speeding tickets, etc. There
are lots of vehicles I have recognised from local
Queenstowners and it’s nothing but laziness!
We have bus services going to the Airport, plus
Taxis, and if you are out of town, pay for parking like
the rest of us. No stopping signs, tow away signs,
and yellow lines should be put in place.
To those lazy people parking there, stop making our
beautiful town look like trash - clean up your act.

I’m fed up at having to look at lines of vehicles
parked on the side of the road coming into
Queenstown from Kelvin Heights. For tourists
coming into Queenstown thats the first thing they
see in our beautiful town.

Not all are nice people especially out of town
developers looking for a quick buck with no concern
for the legacy of crap they leave behind.

There is a multitude of undeveloped consented
sections throughout the Wakatipu.
Whilst I appreciate that we live in a free-market
economy, and for that I am grateful, you have to
wonder what the various planners are doing releasing
more and more allotments onto the market without
any thought to upgrading infrastructure.
I think, and it will never happen, that a good idea
would be to put conditions onto consents that
require either a house to constructed on it within X
period of years from issue of consent, or that it needs
to be sold to a non-related party.
Until such time as the infrastructure catches up, it just
seems foolish to continue to seek to facilitate more
development. Keep in mind the local CEO also
wants to intensify the gateway the Arrowtown via a
non-notified process

There has to be a balance between what we are
willing to develop and what we want to preserve for
the future generations. Once land has be developed
there is no going back - it will be gone forever. Also
the rush to develop more land without upgrading our
existing infrastructure e.g sewerage, is stupidity as its
finest. We are barely coping as it is!
