I started to get excited last week when I saw the guys laying down the
scaffolding for the downtown ice rink over the Village Green. There’s one thing a
festival needs to do, and that is transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. We all
know Queenstown’s Winter Festival runs on a shoestring budget but that doesn’t
excuse the distinct lack of festival atmosphere that has plagued our beloved festival
at times in the past. I’m afraid a banner over the Ballarat Street Bridge and a few
flags on lamp posts just does not cut it when it comes to creating atmosphere.
So I am relieved to see the ice rink, which surely does not come cheap, returning
for another year. There is no mistaking the feeling something extraordinary is
happening in Queenstown when you turn into town on a cold crisp evening to see
that winter wonderland lighting display over the ice rink in the Village Green. But I
am hopeful the festival atmosphere does not stop there.
We are fairly down to earth straightforward people us Kiwis, and making a fuss
is not a natural attribute. However getting into the spirit of things is as easy as
wearing a silly hat or decorating your shop window. You can always take it to the
next level and enter a float in the opening parade, strip down to your tiny whites
for the dash for cash, or brave the sting of a belly flop into the lake as part of the
birdman completion.

Whatever you do, or do not do, to mark the 40th coming of an extraordinary
highlight in Queenstown’s annual calendar of events, remember what Winter
Festival is all about. It is a welcome party to the economically and culturally
important winter season. It’s a positive thing that feeds off the positive attitude of
its locals. The only reason it has become a bit of must do for visitors from Auckland
and Australia is because they see good times to be had and want to be part of it.

The media circus is a by-product of, and not the reason for, the existence of
Queenstown’s Winter Festival. With no locals in silly hats and festival glows on,
there are no culturally interesting happenings for the media to report. And as a
result of that, no attraction to Aucklanders and Aussies, and therefore no economic
upside. In short, if the people of Queenstown fail to get into the spirit of it, the 40th
Winter Festival is doomed before the fireworks burst into life this Friday night. Let’s
get excited.

Service complaints
Phones at the counter or not? Queenstown
workers regulary have their level of service
questioned in this Whinge column, a good
deal of us that work long hours and sometimes
have two jobs for little pay and not all of us
are transients we live here long term (10yrs+).
We just want people to be polite to us as we
are to them. Everyday I do my job with pride,
trying to give the best customer experience I can,
however over the past few months I have noticed
an ever increasing level of people wanting to be
served but they are on their phones engaged in
conversation. I find this frustrating, I am not a mind
reader, I deserve the time of day from those who
want to be served. I don’t deserve to be ignored
and then be spoken to curtly as if I have wronged
them. I do not and would not expect someone to
serve me while I am engaged in conversation on
a mobile device. I would and do pardon myself
from the call before I approach the counter, show
courtesy to the person serving me then go back to
my call after I have completed my business, or I
call the person back. So my questions are 1. Is this
now acceptable to be on a call and expect to be
served? 2. Does the person on the call have the
right to be miffed when I cannot read their minds?
3. How do you think you would feel if the tables
were turned?
Sam
TAXI!!
My whinge is that last week just after lunch when
it was raining I went to the cab rank on Camp
St to get a cab and there wasn’t one in sight.
There was a queue of about 8 people and we
just waited and waited. Now and again a cab
(nearly all Blue Bubble) would come along until
eventually I managed to get one to take me to
Frankton. Later that evening I was in town, and it
was still raining but there must have been 20 of
them on the rank, over the road and up Ballarat St.
Obviously the night time is the really busy time
but they should really look at the big picture and
make sure that there are plenty of cabs available
during the day too, especially when it is raining.
Because Blue Bubble made the effort to be there
during the day, I made sure that I got into a Blue
Bubble to take me home that night. One good
turn deserves another!

Winter Blues
This is a warning whinge to anyone who thinks the
streets of Queenstown are paved with gold. For
a long time I have planned and dreamed about
coming to Queenstown to do a winter season.
Unfortunately the dream is not quite panning out
how I planned. I arrived here at the start of May
to find a house and get a job in plenty of time
before the ski season started. I managed to get a
job within the first week as a barman but found
that the hours weren’t that reliable and sometimes
I would only be rostered on 1 or 2 shifts a week.
I kept getting told that when things got busier then
I would get more hours. After two weeks I told
them that unless they gave me more hours I would
have to find another job as there is no way I can
live on that amount of money. I expected them to
give me more hours but my threat backfired and
I don’t have any shifts at all. I have tried to find a
new job but there aren’t any left.
I also found a flat on Frankton Road pretty quick
but now I can’t pay the expensive rent as I have
no income and my new flatmates are wanting
me out so they can get someone who will pay
rent. They seemed pretty cool when I moved in
but now their true colours are showing. It’s not
looking good so I will probably have to go back
to Invercargill unless there is a miracle.
So if you are planning to come here make sure you
get your employer to guarantee how many hours
you will get otherwise it can all turn to s*** pretty
quick. Vegetables are also really expensive here.

Airport Antics (issue 453 - 10th June)
Dear Joel,
Thank you for your feedback, we’re very
sorry to hear that you had a bad experience
at the airport. Our team is working hard to
improve the airport offerings but sometimes
this is not without its challenges. We are very
conscious that as we go through this period
of growth and infrastructure development
we must continue to deliver great service to
our visitors and unfortunately we didn’t on
this occasion.
From Monday we have a pop-up food
outlet going into the airport with items
like soups, pre-packaged sandwiches and
takeaway coffees to make it easy for people
to grab and go. This will alleviate some
pressure on the existing café while the
new one is being built. We’ve also started
adding extra seating into the terminal in
preparation for the busy winter season.
We hope the next time you come through
you will have a better experience with us.
Please feel free to contact me at the airport
if you would like to discuss anything further.
Regards,
Scott Paterson

Convention Centre
The Council will decide on 26 June whether or not to go ahead with the
proposed Convention Centre in central Queenstown. The issue is one of
several included for consultation in this year’s Draft Annual Plan, which
will be adopted at this month’s full Council meeting. The meeting will be
at the Lake Hayes Pavilion, from 1pm.
Dogs Being a Nuisance? – Tell QLDC
There are times when man’s best friend drives people barking mad. If
you see wandering dogs, dog attacks or there are barking issues in your
neighbourhood, please call the Council straight away. We provide a 24/7
reporting service on 441 0499 and if the problem involves a dog attack on
people, stock or other dogs, we aim to respond straight away.
What should we do about Psychoactive
Substances?
The Council is looking for community views on whether restrictions
should be developed on the sale, distribution and use of psychoactive
substances such as synthetic cannabinoids in our district, when the next
generation of products begins to appear on shelves. QLDC has no power
to impose a total ban, but could use a combination of bylaw, District
Plan provisions and a Locally Approved Products Policy to limit where
and when products could be sold, made or used. If you have a view or
would like to join the discussions, email [email protected] and put
“psychoactive substances” in the subject line.

Winter Road Reports
QLDC provides an early morning road update seven days a week through
the winter. You can get it by following @queenstownlakes on Twitter;
“liking” Queenstown Lakes District Council on Facebook, or signing up
for our emailed reports – go to our website www.qldc.govt.nz or email
[email protected] and put “road report” in the subject line. While
you’re at it, now is a good time to check that your chains fit your tyres
properly and you know how to put them on. Keep an ice-scraper and
torch in your glove box.
It’s Scuttlebutt Time
Watch for your copy of Scuttlebutt, the Council’s quirkily-named
newsletter, with this week’s edition of The Mirror. It’s also on our website:
www.qldc.govt.nz
Dog Control Bylaw
Over 1000 people took part in our survey on dog control back in January
and their views have shaped the new Dog Control Bylaw and associated
Policy, that is now out for formal consultation. The intention is to balance
the ability of dog owners to exercise and enjoy their pets against the rights
of the whole community – particularly children – to enjoy streets, parks
and trails without being attacked, intimidated or inconvenienced by dogs.
Have a look at what’s proposed and share your views at www.qldc.govt.nz
with a link from the home page.
Better Library Search Access On-Line
Library users will notice a new look to our on-line library catalogue. As
well as all the existing services, you’ll find a more user-friendly search
function and new features, for example you’ll be able to review your own
user history, see what books you have out, and how much you’ve paid (or
have owing) in fines or reserve fees.
After-Hours Planning Service
Our new after-hours resource planning service is aimed at people who
have trouble getting away from their day job to seek advice on new
projects. A planner is on duty every Wednesday night from 5-9pm to
discuss planning issues, including the resource consent requirements for
new business ventures, building extensions and visitor accommodation
rules. Phone 441 4099 or email [email protected] to make an
appointment for a face to face meeting or a phone consultation.

the A-Team again showed their ruthlessness on attack. Equally pleasing
was another top defensive effort restricting the visitors to just 3 points.
