The Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival started in 1985 as a way of celebrating the beauty of the autumn season and after all these years still captures the imagination of the local population and thousands of visitors. It is amazing to think, that in a world where high-tech, fast and furious adventure activities and multimillion dollar tourist attractions rule, that the simple slow-moving act of nature turning the colour of tree leaves from green to gold and red would still be such a drawcard. But then this is the most photogenic of seasons and before we start getting all excited about the approaching winter ski season, remember to stop, look, and feel the ‘autumn-ness’. However it has not been an easy ride for Arrowtown’s Autumn Festival in the last few years. Like Queenstown’s Winter Festival the squeeze came on corporate sponsorship deals at about the same time the abbreviation ‘GFC’ came into our vocabulary. But thanks to a bunch of hard working volunteers, the generosity of locally owned businesses like Akarua Wines, and the determination of the local community, the Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival has survived. There have been some big calls made, one of which was the concentration into five days what was a 10 day festival. But calls that most people agree will produce a more successful and vibrant festival. George FM DJ Dick Johnson with Queenstown promoter and DJ Ribera at Electric Rush at Barmuda on Sunday. (Photo: Jonny James) And thank heavens it has survived to live another year because regardless of how important economically the festival is to Arrowtown and the surrounding area, the focus is most definitely on the locals. It all started with this community looking for an excuse to socialise, and come together to celebrate who they are, giving back to all generations who make Arrowtown the place it is. The festival’s longevity can be directly attributed to its ability to remain true to those social and community involvement based principles. It is important not to take such festive offerings for granted as they help bring us together and define us as a community. Attendance of an Autumn Festival opening parade and market is almost a right of passage for new comers to the wider Wakatipu area. The Pie, Pint & Pinot is fast becoming a similar drawcard. If you want to be a true local you need to get out and support local events. Given the fact Arrowtown and the wider Wakatipu Basin has grown so much in recent times, there are no doubt many new comers are still yet to discover the regions local community heart. LUNCH DINNER TAKEAWAY The Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival is a big deal to this community and almost did not go ahead this year. So taking it for granted is not an option and I hope to see you all on Buckingham Street this Saturday for the parade; putting your glad rags on for the Denim & Diamonds Party on Saturday night, and giving gold panning a go on Sunday at the Gold Panning Champs. I decided to binge on a Milk Chocolate Egg with Gummi Bears. Thinking that this one was originally $10 down to 97 cents I must be getting a bargain of a lifetime. Upon opening it, I noticed how much empty space was inside the huge box. The tiny egg was strategically placed at the very front of the box so all you could see was the foil through the window, giving you the illusion it was much bigger than I originally thought. The small bag of Gummi Bears was taped, yes... cellotaped to the other front window of the box so it wouldn’t get lost in the back of the huge box. On a positive note tho... the chocolate egg was made here in New Zealand and tasted like chocolate is meant to, not plastic like a lot of eggs do. Overall I was shocked and disappointed at what you get for 10 bucks at Easter time. Easter eggs are incredibly over priced and the amount of wasted packaging that goes into these boxes is appalling! Seeing that it was made in NZ only makes me feel more angry at the wastefulness! What happened to opening the box and finding an egg that fills the box and the biting into your egg and finding the treats inside?? Chocolate Lover Public Toilets The que today was 10 deep, and I would like to know how long its going to take them to get back into full service. PIEMAN QLDC responds: A queue for the loo is the last thing you need when you’re desperate, but it’s not quite as bad as it sounds. The toilet in cubicle 3 has a broken flush mechanism and we are waiting for the parts, which are not available in Queenstown. At time of writing it has been 10 days but hopefully by the time you read this, the parts will have arrived and the loo will have been fixed. The reason you may think that it’s taken 7 weeks is because two other cubicles at Earnslaw Park have had problems with the door locks. We’ve ordered extra parts for these so that in future we won’t have to wait for new ones to come from out of town. Response To Last Weeks’ Editorial Why oh bl--dy why do people lump all us “freedom campers” in the same catorgry? Us registered certified freedom campers pay, and are inspected every four years to get our self containment sticker. We ALL HAVE TO HAVE a toilet before we are granted this certificate, and might I add, a sealed container to take away our rubbish. We are hardly like to jeopardise our qualification by, as what Scott Stevens says “relieving ourselves in the woods”. The vans that are commonly called “sh..ter vans” are, 99% of the time, hired by overseas tourists, and they, not us, are polluting our countryside. Might I add, that NOT ALL tourists are so irresponsible or unhygenic, in fact, in our travels we have meet some very lovely (and No 37% Yes 63% Vote now! www.lwb.co.nz Are you going to the Arrowtown Autumn Festival this weekend? FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS Editorial Issue 545 Am in Japan at the moment and they have what’s called Michi No Eki which are rest stops on the highways. Approximately a thousand of these , not in towns but along the highways. They have good clean toilets, basic washing amenities and usually vending machines. They are used by truckers, car drivers and an increasing amount of camper vans. Next it was time to eat the goodies. I was planning on sharing the goods with my husband, but there wasn’t really much to go around. The chocolate egg was pretty thin and there was probably a maximum of 20 Gummi Bears. Can someone from council enlighten us as to why cubicle 3 at the Earnslaw Park toilets has been non operational for 7 weeks now???? ASK ME Should New Zealand spend money on nationwide freedom camping facilities? clean) tourists. It is the small minority that are defacing our countryside, so please don’t label all “freedom campers” in the same uncaring, defacing, filthy lot. Further more, we don’t always “freedom camp”. In this country we have some lovely motor camps, D.O.C. Camps, and NZMCA properties, and P.O.P.s to stay in and most of these charge an overnight (varying rate) fee, which we happily pay. To stay a night in a beautiful part of this wonderful country, is a privilege, and no way, would most of us jeopardise this by crapping in the bushes. Freedom Camper Tony A per night tax on non self contained camper vans and an increase in fines for those caught fowling the environment may help. Allan Perhaps owning homes are getting impossible for many, rents are very high, unemployment, no housing, no benefits anymore for the ones in need, as we decline from a welfare state people are resorting to campervans and anything free to live on. Esra Probably the most short sighted and heavy handed article I have ever read. Surely it would make more sense to allow those “worthless individuals” as you put it to show their worth more than they already do. Take away the fact that they already contribute to the local economy by buying local goods and services and by taking the jobs which old high and mighty Scotty wouldn’t even consider taking. Matt Matt, Scott’s opinions are held by most locals. You are clearly a new arrival. The costs involved to clean up after freedom campers must be considerable - the empty cheap pizza boxes, cartons and empty bottles of alcohol, etc. Dan COMMENT ON WHINGES! Getting engaged can be one of the most memorable and exciting moments in your life. For the first few weeks after the proposal, you both feel dizzy with happiness and are bursting with anticipation. As well you both should be! You’ve met the man or woman of your dreams, you’ve decided to get married, and now it’s time to plan the wedding – the official celebration of your love and commitment. PETER DOYLE MARRIAGE CELEBRANT Phone: +64 3 442 1211 Mobile: 0274 343 946 Email: [email protected] www.peterdoyle.co.nz As you plan this wonderful day, you both will continue to feel great joy, but may also experience a few butterflies and a little confusion. After all, organising a ceremony and reception is a big undertaking. There will be questions about anything and everything: from the meal (fish, chicken or beef?) to the wedding gown (low-cut, fitted, or empire-waisted?) to the reception music (live band, small orchestra, or DJ?). There will be issues about budgets, guest lists, and styles. But in the end, just remember what this day is really about – a celebration of love. Stay focussed, and keep organised.
