Last week saw another serious collision on our roads when a girl from
Invercargill crossed the centre line on Gorge Road hitting a parked car. The
crash has left the driver in intensive care and one of her two passengers with
a broken collar bone. As the summer season is officially in full swing our roads
around the basin are filled up with tourists from all over New Zealand and
the world, and this in-flux of rental cars and campers is adding to our already
hazardous roads.
It seems that a day doesn’t go by in our fair town without witnessing some sort
of gross mutilation of the road code. In an area of New Zealand where tailgating appears to be an Olympic sport, it’s not hard to see why so many of the
cars in the region are suffering cosmetically. With New Zealand having already
passed the previous year’s road related death toll (and the year isn’t over)
health and safety on our roads should be a major concern for ALL users.
As pedestrians I’m sure many of you have suffered as I have, at the hands of
the careless motorists on our roads who are more concerned with taking that
urgent phone call than stopping at a crossing. The roundabout on Shotover is
a particularly good place to witness this. Then there’s the drivers who believe
they were destined for Formula One greatness as they tear through the
residential areas and round blind corners in an effort to get to some life event
that is ultimately more important than their own life, or the lives of anyone else
in their path for that matter.

I can almost hear the collective exasperation out there as some of you cry out “it’s the tourists”, “the Asians are to blame”. These are favoured slogans on the
issue. However in most cases this is totally inaccurate. In my experience it’s the
resident population who are the real danger on the roads. The motorists who
believe that they know the roads so well that caution is optional and everyone
else is unskilled when it comes to driving - these are the real dangers on our
roads.
But I’m not here to poke the issue with a big stick - I want to know what
possible action can be taken on the subject. I put it to you - what are the
options? Lower speed limits and cameras? Better sign posting? Harsher
fines and punishments?........ummmm. The solution from behind the keyboard
certainly seems clear. Be patient. Know your limits. Respect. And above all
drive to survive this summer.

No Contact From Contact...
About 5 years ago me and my partner signed up with
Contact Energy on Gorge Rd for our gas supply. At
this time we paid a bond of $150, and I bet so did
many other people in Queenstown. The time has come
when we have moved to a house which unfortunately
has no gas so after 5 years of paying our bills on time
(you don’t want to lose that discount!) We cancelled
our account and showing a receipt from 5 years ago
(yes I am one of those people who keep stuff for 5
years) politely asked for our bond back.
It is now 3 months later, and we have gone through
numerous stages and departments of Contact Energy.
From “you already got your bond back in the past” to
“I can’t exactly see when you got it, I just know you
did” to “I will pass you onto our Customer Resolutions
Team”... CR team were nice enough, a week of emails
later we agreed that no records of a refund can be
found anywhere and hence short paying our final bill is
a good option for all.
But no. Followed by a few nasty emails of “you owe
us $150” a letter from a debt collector’s agency arrived.
Not one, but 2 separate ones in each of our names.
This was followed by an extremely angry phone call to
Contact on Saturday when we found out that although
their helpline is open on Saturdays, they can’t really do
much as none of the other departments are there. After
demanding ‘the supervisor’ a very nice, calm, informed
and apologetic lady spoke to me and used words such
as “sorry, mistake, understand, priority” informed me
that their ‘Advocate Team’ will sort this ASAP. She
even set a time frame on things, being “by Thursday”
(read yesterday). Oh well - I guess I could call them
tomorrow, but they probably won’t be there.
We have swapped to Genesis last week.
Two questions remain unanswered - after asking the
helpline lady “Shall I just wait for you to call me back,
and wait for the debt collector guy to turn up at my
door in the meantime?” She said she wouldn’t give me
any advice on this and will not comment. Thanks lady,
how helpful.
Last but not least, how many people in Queenstown
paid this bond of $150 and never got it back??

prompt manner and has had no complaints upheld by
the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner on
our bond refund process.
We work hard to provide great service to our customers
and ask anyone who feels they are experiencing a
similar issue to get in touch with us on 0800 80 9000
It’s clear something went wrong with the way we
handled this customer’s request and we’ve apologised
and worked with them to resolve the matter.
Disrispectful Driving Towards Cyclists
Share the road please, The common law definition of
“road” here in New Zealand essentially states that the
basic right that is to be exercised on a road is that of
travelling from one place to another.
For some reason there are people who believe that ‘the
law’ gives individuals driving motor vehicles, exclusive
rights to use the road, but nothing could be further from
the truth. The liberty to drive is not a natural right and
the provisions in the legislation impose restrictions and
obligations, rather than granting rights.
We live in an era where common sense seems to be
the most uncommon of the senses and we can find
drivers doing what seems to be a competition to see
who can overtake a cyclist in the most radical way.
Once confronted the regular justification is that they
do it “to make a point”. What point if you don’t mind
me asking?
One day a driver with road rage will pass a cyclist so
close that it will hit his head with the wing mirror and
kill him, and then the point made will be crystal clear.
I hear all the time local drivers adamantly complaining
about the recklessness of overseas drivers, but they are
frustratingly unable to see that they drive like bullies and
they behave as if they own the road, forgetting that the
road is to be shared with others that also want to go
from A to B, by car, bicycle or horse.
Respect and tolerance should be exercised in order to
guarantee a harmonious coexistence. Even the brightest
local seems to transform into a bumpkin when driving
the Glenorchy Road, showing with its intolerant driving
the biggest promulgation of ignorance seen in this land
since the arrival of the pakeha

Yet Another Parking Whinge - Issue 528
Yes Grant, I am well aware of the underground
parking, like I said I’ve been going several times a
week for months now. It is often full as well as it is
staff parking for the Medical Centre in addition to
visitors. It’s great parking in there because yes I can use
the lift!!! As for entitlement, you can call it what you
want, but I do believe spaces infront of a Medical
Centre should be reserved for people who are sick
or injured.
How about QLDC making it a condition of Skylines
lease that they build a parking building at the back of
the base station in the area they currently use as a staff
car park. Surely they will need extra parking, because if
Skyline goes ahead with its planned additions in 2017
where are all their additional patrons going to park?
Or are Skyline like Fregburger one of Queenstowns
untouchables?
