Tourism is booming. It is not the first time in our history you could say
that. From the late 19th century to the beginning of World War 2, tourism
was the growth industry fuelling the Wakatipu. For the really adventurous,
venturing beyond Glenorchy was the Holy Grail. After the boat trip to
Glenorchy from Queenstown, add to that a further two and a half hour horse
and cart ride, and you reached Paradise.
Nowadays the trip from Queenstown to Paradise is only an hour’s drive but
still a different world entirely. Enchanting is the only way to describe it. Over
the years, like many other locals, I have spent some memorable times staying
at the little huts or lodges operated by the Paradise Trust. Last weekend we
were lucky enough to stay in one of the new huts overlooking the Dart River.
These huts were gifted by Glenorchy campground as one of many kind acts
of support the local community and regular visitors to Paradise mustered
together in response a fire that took out one of the precious historic buildings
on the property in 2014. Now that disaster is part of the rich history of the
area and life at Paradise is back to its spectacular best. It really is a magic
spot reserved for those who make the effort to find it.
Living in the midst of the 2016 tourism boom, Paradise has hundreds of
tourist buses and rental cars driving past its gates every week. However not
too many know what they are driving past and keep going never turning left.
I do not mean to sound selfish, but I am glad 99% of tourists miss it. Through
those gates is calmness reserved for those in the know. I hope mentioning
this secret getaway spot here in the pages of the Lakes Weekly does not
change that calmness too much, but in my opinion every local needs to spend
a weekend away in Paradise. And given the wide open space each simple
little hut has views over, I doubt me telling you about it will suddenly turn
Paradise into a crowded holiday park.

We all need a little respite from the rat race. And although people from larger
rat races like Auckland, Sydney, Singapore or Shanghai choose Queenstown
as a stress releasing escape, that does not mean Queenstowners do not
need to escape themselves from time to time. The Queenstown bubble can
become a little claustrophobic and the last thing you want to do on a weekend
away is sit in a car for hours or get caught in the thing you may very well be
trying to avoid, a tourism trap. Luckily we can look close to home and still find

The Death Of Adventure Tourism
I read about the 10,000 Chinese incentive group delegates
arriving in Queenstown with some chagrin. Queenstown,
the adventure capital, Disneyland of the outdoors where
we provide recreational pursuits for travellers from all over
the world. Or at least we used to.
However reading in the ODT today that our GM of
Tourism NZ, Deborah Grey is saying Queenstown’s
accommodation is being filled by Chinese travellers and
everyone else needs to go somewhere else to travel. This
is not right.
Our traditional markets from Australia, UK, US and
Europe have a long history of recreation. Many of the
activities we provide in Queenstown were invented in
those places. Those travellers have a long history and are
knowledgeable on the activities we provide. Even if they
have not done it themselves, it’s something they’ve seen
and would like to give it a go.
We need to look after our traditional markets, we need
to ensure Queenstown is not flooded with travellers from
one country. It’s been done before with Koreans in the
early 90’s, it didnt work then and its not going to work
now.
The Chinese however do not have a history of recreation,
it competes with work ethic. This means activities with a
high level of participation, is moderately physical or of long
duration is not desired by the average Chinese traveller.
Thats ok, we provide a wide range of experiences for
everyone.

Thats nothing, I was getting some native cuttings
recently up past Glenorchy on the Routeburn Road
and just a little off the Road, Poo and there was toilet
paper everywhere. I was telling a mate, he laughed
and said thats nothing mate... I was on the lake beach
wanting to take a swim and decided to put my keys
under a rock. I lifted the rock up only to find Poo all
over my fingers.

It is Autumn, her sweet breath having long thawed the
sticky frost of the morning on the weary track by the Lower
Shotover River. Delicately scented from the perfume which
lingers inside the bark of poplar trees, their pollen flooding
the trail from every corner. Dotted hillsides of sheep
meet your every view whilst ochre rays of sun try to slice
through the last remaining slivers of open sky. And then,
WHAM! Here we go again…
Dog owners, I understand that it’s a big task to walk your
dog, get some exercise and - *gasp*- pick up their leftovers,
but seriously, aren’t you all better than this? With a dog
comes great responsibility, but is it really that responsible
to leave their excrements to be a threat to the health of our
children, degrade our town and transmit disease? I don’t
presume you would hang your child’s dirty diaper on a
shrub in your garden, or am I wrong?
Blue and visible, a supposed ‘doggy poo bag’ is perched
conveniently at eye level on a branch to my left. And
it ain’t no small meadow muffin in there! I mutter to
myself the sinful act of which a human can bring upon
this glorious nature walk, when no more than two minutes
later, I am once again astounded by the fecal matter that is
being exposed so proudly to the public.
Here’s the solution: If your dog poops, you scoop! And
please, don’t try to attempt an outdoor decoration. Isn’t
nature already beautiful enough?

5 Mile with high rents and multinationals who don’t
need to make a profit are driving up rents everywhere.
Whilst the multinationals are here and dont need to
cover costs, the small business owner does. We have
a small 3 person retail business in Mid Gorge Road.
Our rent and outgoings now are around 60 grand.
This means that with a 25% margin we have to sell
almost 1/4 of a million dollars just to cover rent. Add
in wages and other overheads and it’s very hard work
to keep a small business going in a small town with big
rents... but then it seems everyone is coming here and
greedy landlords don’t care who is paying the rent.
