I have an obsession with bamboo toothbrushes. I was given one for
Christmas two years ago and have used them ever since, until, last month,
Queenstown’s supply of bamboo toothbrushes dried up. Apparently, nobody
stocks them anymore.
My requests to find another one have been called “unusual”, “quaint” and even
“probably unhygienic”. It seems a bit ironic given that we’ve just finished ‘Plastic
Free July’, an initiative which garnered less media attention than it deserves.
Bamboo is a versatile plant which can be made into everything from soft jumpers
to toothbrushes and is compostable. This means it’ll break down into matter
which other plants can grow from. This is very unlike our current favourite
marketing buzzword ‘biodegradable’ – which just means it’ll quickly break down
into toxic residues whilst giving off greenhouse gasses. Excellent.
We all know there’s now more people on this planet than ever before, and most
people in the Westernised world have been sold a dream of whizzing electric
toothbrushes, sparkling water in plastic bottles and takeaway coffees. We draw
up oil that’s thousands of years old and squish it and manipulate it into chemicaltastic blue toothbrushes with ‘innovative’ tongue brushes. We use it within six
months, chuck it away and buy another. Think about all the toothbrushes sitting in
New Zealand soil that are never going away and can never be re-used.
An American visitor recently told me “the only green thing about New Zealand is
the colour of the trees,” that’s pretty harsh criticism coming from what I’ve always
thought was one of the most polluted countries on Earth. Turns out, here in New
Zealand we’re not that far behind. We’re just trashing a smaller piece of land on a
smaller scale.

Putting a half-eaten yoghurt container in a blue-lidded bin DOES NOT count as
‘recycling’, and considering the QLDC’s lack-lustre efforts towards ironing out
recycling issues, chucking stuff in a different coloured bin just isn’t going to cut it.
I read a lot of intangible figures about fossil fuels contributing 70% to global
warming, how bad petrol is, how intensive farming is drawing all the nutrients
out of the soil. It’s hard to realise what these figures really mean and what, as
individuals, we can do about it.
This is what the good guys behind the Anti-Plastic Society are tackling; they’re a
community initiative which is starting small (check ‘em out on Facebook). They’re
inviting the Queenstown Lakes District to take their own bags to the supermarket,
use reusable coffee mugs and refuse plastic straws in their drinks. Because we
can’t ask BMW to cut back on their fossil fuel consumption, but we do have the
power to make small but meaningful changes in our day-to-day lives.
There’s a lot of work to do be done when it comes to preserving this planet, but
if we all start small and work our way towards the bigger stuff, it’ll start making a
much-needed difference.

As we roll into peak season once again, we also roll into
the mountains (sorry) of jackets, phones, wallets and other
personal items that get left behind in bars.
I recently received an email about an expensive coat that
was left behind after a night of frivolity and enjoyment. It
began with, “I was at your establishment last Thursday...”
Now let me just clarify - it was now the following
Wednesday. Anyone who works (or has worked) in
a busy bar will perhaps sympathise with me on this. 6
WHOLE DAYS (including the weekend) have now
gone by before you decided to get in touch about your
$400 jacket, that you irresponsibly left behind.
In hospitality time, that is equivalent to 6 weeks. Much
has happened since then in the transient world that is
Queenstown. We have new staff, a fresh delivery of tea
towels has arrived and I even managed to give someone
back their Driver’s Licence, a year after they lost it. So
you see, we are good people. We do our best to get
belongings back to their rightful owners and so do not
appreciate insulting emails about ‘poor service’ and
sentences such as, “Did it just walk off on it’s own then?”
Yes, yes it did my friend, because it clearly did not want to
be on your back anymore.

I can’t afford more and rang the council hoping they
could do something. As it is all private properties
around the top of greenstone place they can’t do
anything. Very frustrated and definitely not getting
any privacy for a while.
I’m a bit worried now that all that money has been spent
on the install that the powers that be will blindly think that
it is much better with all the shiny lights and traffic at a
stand still that it can’t be re-addressed for 10 years. Or
worse, add another 15 sets all along Franton road. why
not. I would imagine the residents of Hensman road will
start to see an influx of traffic if it stays like this.

the traffic from the new lights in town would back up traffic
way past the the now almost ironic “Keep Queenstown
Beautiful” sign? Pretty much everyone I’d say.

I suppose the moral of this story is this: Please remember
that YOUR property is just that - it is still your responsibility
even if left behind in a bar. Keep your drinks close, but
your belongings closer!

Just wanted to vent hoping someone can help. I
planted 20 pittosporum plants this week to finally get
some privacy on our back block. Within 24 hours
the wild goats came in and ate the lot.

Not only should we quit ACC and start charging travel
insurance companies but also we should keep at least
some of the GST raised in the Southern Lakes. That
would sort all our problems out. The government make

queenstowners’ like they love to shove on our faces.

be satisfied. The most common form is demonstrating that an individual
holds a recognised qualification where English language was the medium
of instruction or alternatively, as you are aware, the main applicant is able
to demonstrate that they have had skilled employment in New Zealand
for at least 12 months upon submission of the application. In addition,
Immigration NZ can also accept alternative forms of holding an English
speaking background.
INZ will either accept that you possess acceptable English language
ability based on the information/documentation provided, or if they do not
accept your claim for English language ability (on reasonable grounds)
they can request you to provide an IELTS examination with an overall band
score of 6.5 to meet the English language requirement. Unfortunately, if
you can not meet this, your residence application will be declined.
It is very rare for Immigration NZ to withdraw their request for an English
language test, where the request has been made on reasonable grounds
and their assessment of your application has triggered the need for
the request. We recommend that you arrange to sit this test within the
timeframe requested by Immigration NZ or alternatively, seek legal advice
on your options.

The Duty Manager is responsible to ensure that all guests receive service,
which is welcoming, friendly, professional and efficient in any service that
the Hotel provides.
They must be able to address situations that arise from Guest queries and
or complaints in a appropriate and timely manner.
They should demonstrate a high level of professional practice and adhere
to Scenic Hotel Group’s policy in regards to dress code, personal hygiene,
onsite behaviour and interpersonal communication skills and standards.
Maintain an up to date knowledge on the hotels emergency evacuation
procedures in accordance with health & safety regulations.
Hold a current Duty Managers Certificate and comply at all times with
the requirements of the Sale of Liquor Act and to demonstrate an
understanding of host responsibility.
