provides its students with a unique athletic
program that allows them to pursue athletic
excellence without sacrificing their educational experience.
W&L follows the NCAA Division III guidelines of awarding financial aid based only
on family need and academic merit. The
result is a strong, diverse program in which
participants are motivated by their love of
the game and their desire to excel.
Over the years W&L students have been
impressive on and off the playing fields.

THE SCHOOL
• Located in historic Lexington, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley

THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM
• W&L sponsors 23 varsity sports, 12 for men and 11 for women

• W&L has won the ODAC Commissioner's Cup for overall excellence in men's and
women's athletics 10 of the last 12 years
• In 2005-2006, W&L won 65 percent of its contests and 10 conference championships
• Seventy-nine athletes earned first team all-conference honors last season and
17 were named All-Americans
• 194 athletes were named to receive Scholar-Athlete Awards for achieving at least
a 3.500 grade point average in a term last school year

THE LACROSSE PROGRAM
• Varsity lacrosse at W&L dates back to 1947 and the school has qualified for the
NCAA Tournament 16 times, including five times in the last nine years
• Washington and Lee lacrosse players have earned All-America status from the
USILA 169 times in 59 seasons of play

KEN RUSCIO, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Ken Ruscio officially began his duties as
the University's 26th president in July 2006.
Ruscio earned a B.A. in politics from Washington and Lee in 1976 and earned an M.P.A.
and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978
and 1983, respectively.
Ruscio served as a professor of politics,
associate dean of the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and dean of
freshmen at W&L from 1987 until 2002, when
he became the dean of the Jepson School of
Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond.
Ruscio has also taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Kansas University and was
a postdoctoral research scholar at UCLA. He recently completed his second term as
national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun at W&L
in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led and served on dozens
of academic, professional and civic committees.
Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a
son, Matt, age 16.
CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Chuck O’Connell will serve the 2006-07
school year as Interim Director of Athletics at
Washington and Lee, becoming just the sixth
athletic director in the school’s history. O’Connell arrived at W&L in 1973 as assistant professor of physical education, assistant lacrosse and assistant football coach. He
was named assistant athletic director in 1983,
overseeing the department’s finances, facilities
and operations. In 1991, he became the director of physical education and in 2002, he was
promoted to senior assistant athletic director.
As assistant football coach from 1973-90,
including 13 seasons as defensive coordinator,
O’Connell helped guide the Generals to ODAC
Championships in 1981 and 1985, while mentoring 16 players to First Team All-Conference honors.
As assistant lacrosse coach from 1974-83, O’Connell helped steer the Generals
to six NCAA Division I Tournament berths and 36 players earned USILA Division I AllAmerica honors during his 10 seasons.
Prior to his arrival at W&L, O’Connell served as instructor and assistant football
and assistant lacrosse coach at Friends School (1965-67) and St. Paul’s School (196773), both located in his native Baltimore.
A 1965 graduate of Denison University, O’Connell was inducted into the school’s
athletic hall of fame in 1985 following a stellar playing career with the Big Red. A twotime lacrosse All-American, he is also a member of the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame and
the Maryland Lacrosse Club Hall of Fame.
Active on the national stage, O’Connell is a member of the Division III Athletics
Administration Association, the National Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
is the past president of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)
and US Lacrosse Coaches Association.

ABOUT W&L
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVERSITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$50,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at the
time the largest to any educational
institution—continues today as part of the endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L was ranked 14th in the 2006 U.S. News listing of the nation's top liberal
arts colleges, marking the 18th consecutive year that W&L has been ranked as one
of the top 25 liberal arts colleges in the nation.
W&L also features a highly-ranked School of Law which has been an integral
part of the school since 1866. Approximately 125 students receive Juris Doctor
degrees each year and five Master of Law degrees.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons

2007 SEASON OUTLOOK
The Washington and Lee lacrosse program lost just one starter
from its 2006 roster, but plenty of
change is on the horizon. The Generals have a new head coach and a
new attitude to go with it.
"The buck stops here," said
first-year Head Coach Gene McCabe. "But, I also want the players
to know that this is their team and
what happens is determined by their
commitment to success."
Following a near two-decade
run in the NCAA Division III Top 20,
the Generals slipped out of the polls
the last two seasons and McCabe
is intent on returning W&L to the
conference and national elite -- and
he is no stranger to success with
the Generals, having served as an
assistant coach at W&L from 1999-2001, three of the most successful seasons in
school history.
"Coach Cerino laid a foundation for a return to prominence with some excellent
recruiting classes," noted McCabe. "Now we want to establish strong team chemistry
and make sure every player is committed to doing their very best every day -- we want
them to walk off the field after every game knowing they played as hard and as well
as they could. If we do that, success is going to follow."
Expected to set the tone will be a trio of senior captains: midfielder Charlie Clarke,
defenseman Peter Goodwin and goalie Chris Lalli. Each has been a starter for the
past two seasons and all bring a wealth of experience to the table. In fact, for the
first time in two seasons, the Generals have a bevy of senior leadership, something
McCabe is excited about.
"Senior leadership is one of our greatest strengths," he said. "We have 13 seniors
and a number of those guys have significant game experience. They have seen the
highs and lows and we need to rely on their leadership to help us reach our goals."
Based upon returning upperclassmen, the Generals defense appears to be a
strength as well. W&L allowed an average of just 8.85 goals per game last season,
led by the play of Goodwin and Lalli. Goodwin was a 2006 Second Team All-ODAC
selection, while Lalli, according to McCabe, is poised to return to the form of his
sophomore campaign when he saved better than 60 percent of shots faced and was
a preseason All-America pick. The are be joined by senior defenseman Charlie McCombs (2006 Second Team
All-ODAC) and sophomore James Shanahan, who started 12 games as a freshman. Junior Collin Guy, sophomores Andrew Carr and Tyler Smith, and freshman Francis
Smyth are expected to compete for time in the rotation.
"We have proven, experienced defensemen returning and plenty of depth on close
defense," noted McCabe. "At the same time, this group is hungry and feel they have
a lot to prove."
The defensive midfield is athletic and talented, but they will exhibit the most
change of any position. Perrin Monroe, an All-ODAC selection last spring, was one
of the few losses to graduation and Charlie Clarke moves to offense in 2007. Junior
long-pole Spotty Robins returns after garnering Honorable Mention All-ODAC honors
last season and he is joined by senior Bose Bratton and sophomore Griffin Bealle. 4

"This is an athletic, experienced group who have worked hard to develop offensive
skills to compliment their defensive talents," stated McCabe. "They will play good
defense, and also help us in transition."
Sophomores Seldon Clarke and Kevin Fuge are expected to handle the majority
of faceoffs after winning 62 percent of their draws last season. Clarke took a majority
of the faceoffs (121-of-189) and won 64 percent of the time.
"The faceoff guys will help us gain more possessions during the course of a
game and we are going to look for them to help us create offensive opportunities in
unsettled situations," said McCabe. "The two of them provide a great 1-2 punch and
both worked very hard at improving their finishing skills in the fall."
The attack unit returns talent and experience. Sophomore Tim Skeen looks to
build upon his ODAC Rookie of the Year campaign in which he led the team in scoring
with 35 points on 17 goals and 18 assists. Junior Ned Rider is poised for a breakout
campaign after totaling 22 goals and seven assists last season, while senior Grant
Martin also looks to continue his steady improvement after tallying 15 goals and seven
assists in 2006. Junior Will Englehart, sophomore Seth Fishman and freshman Will
Keigler also figure in the mix.
"As a group, this is a balanced unit," said McCabe. "We have some inside threats,
some talented dodgers from behind the cage and some finishers."
McCabe believes that his midfield unit is the deepest he's seen at W&L in some
time. Sophomore Harry St. John, a Second Team All-ODAC pick last season, headlines
the group after finishing with 24 goals and eight assists last season. He is joined on the
first midfield line by Charlie Clarke and senior Lee McLaughlin, or seniors Matt Arcati
and Jim Ryan. Clarke moves from defensive midfield where he scored two goals and
assisted on two others. McCabe likes the improvement shown by McLaughlin and
Arcati looks to bounce back from a 2006 season that saw him tally just five points. Ryan
finished fifth on the team in scoring with 22 points on 14 goals and eight assists.
Among those who McCabe believes will provide the Generals with great depth
at the position include junior Tyler Lenczuk, sophomore Geoff Marks and freshmen
Kevin Feeney, Chris Washington and Deets Hoffman.
"We are a deep and athletic group that can play on both ends of the field," McCabe stated. "We are going to ask them to play both ways more than in the past so
that we can ride better, play more aggressive defense and push the ball on offense. We want to use our depth at
each position to wear down
our opponent."
Among other changes
McCabe expects to make is

all areas of the field.
"We expect to use 24-to-28
guys per game to utilize our
depth," said McCabe. "We
want to dictate the tempo and
force people to react to our
style of play. I'm excited to
get the season underway. We
have a great group of players
and they are committed to
giving the effort needed to
compete for an ODAC Championship and a return to the
NCAA Tournament."

GENE McCABE, HEAD COACH
Gene McCabe is in his first season as
head men’s lacrosse coach at Washington
and Lee University.
McCabe is no stranger to W&L lacrosse,
having served as an assistant lacrosse and
assistant football coach for the Generals
from 1998-2001. During his three seasons
as an assistant with the W&L lacrosse team,
McCabe helped lead the Generals to a 43-5
(.896) overall record and a 17-1 mark in the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The team
won two ODAC Championships and twice
participated in the NCAA Tournament, reaching
the semifinals in 2000. The 1999 and 2001
teams were both ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III polls at one point during
those seasons.
After a successful run with the Generals, McCabe left for Hamilton College in
January of 2002, steering the Continentals to a 54-18 (.750) overall record in five
seasons.
McCabe's 2003 team at Hamilton finished the season with a school-record
15 victories (15-3), claimed the Liberty League title and advanced to the NCAA
Quarterfinals. For his efforts,

McCabe lettered for both
the football and lacrosse teams at Bates College, where he graduated with a bachelor's
degree in European History in 1995. He served as a student assistant coach with
the Bobcats from 1992-96, before serving two seasons as the head football and
lacrosse coach at Oak Hill High School in his native Maine.
McCabe and his wife Kristen have three young daughters; Kaelan (7), Molly
(4), and Ava (2).
GENERALS' FAST FACT
Since 1991, no other team has claimed more ODAC Championships
than W&L's eight (1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004). In addition, the Generals have posted an 88-24 (.786) all-time record
in the ODAC since joining the league in lacrosse in 1987. Prior to that,
W&L had competed as an independent in Division I.

MIKE SESSA, ASSISTANT COACH
Mike Sessa is in his fourth season as an
assistant lacrosse coach at Washington and
Lee University.
Sessa serves as the Generals' offensive
coordinator and goalie coach.
Sessa came to Washington and Lee in July
of 2003 following two highly-successful stints as
an assistant coach at Limestone College.
He served as an assistant coach for the
Saints from 1993-2000, culminating in a Division II National Championship during the 2000
season.
Sessa then moved on to the Charlotte Latin
School for the 2001 season before returning to
Limestone for the 2002 season, again leading the Saints to the Division II National
Championship.
Sessa holds two bachelor's degrees from Limestone, one in business (1993) and
one in physical education (2002).
As a player, Sessa was a three-year captain and Team MVP during the 1991 season.
He finished his career ranked second on the program's all-time scoring list.
Sessa was inducted into the Limestone Athletic Hall of Fame in the Fall of 2004.
DREW DELANEY, ASSISTANT COACH
Drew Delaney is in his third season as an
assistant coach at Washington and Lee serving
as the program's defensive coordinator, mandown coach and faceoff coach.
Delaney came to W&L following a year as
the assistant lacrosse coach and assistant dean
of students at the Western Reserve Academy
in Hudson, Ohio.
A 2003 graduate of Franklin & Marshall
with a bachelor of arts degree in special studies, Delaney was a four-year letterwinner for
the Diplomats' lacrosse team. As a senior, he
helped lead F&M to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Delaney has been a director for the Rising
Star 160 camp and has worked other elite camps like the Advantage Lacrosse Camps
and Top Star Lacrosse Camps.

W&L LACROSSE HISTORY
For over half a century Washington
and Lee has had a special place in the world
of collegiate lacrosse. W&L gained national
prominence with several runs at the Division
I national championship in the 1970s and has
established itself as one of the top Division III
programs since moving to that classification
in 1987.
The program's roots date to a club
team in 1938 and the program gained varsity
status in 1947. Winning didn’t always come
easy during the early years, but Dick Szlasa’s
1970 club turned in an 8-3 record that proved
to be a sign of things to come.
The 1970’s were indeed a special time
for W&L lacrosse. In 10 seasons the Generals
rolled up a 108-35 record and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament seven
times.
The first trip to the NCAA’s came in Szlasa’s final season in 1972. The Generals
went 12-3 before falling to Johns Hopkins in the tournament.
Jack Emmer took over the reigns and proceeded to lead the Generals into
six straight NCAA tournaments. His 1973 team finished the regular season undefeated, including a 15-11 win over archrival Virginia that proved to be the first of five
straight wins over the Cavaliers. The Generals then beat Navy 13-12 in overtime in
the tournament before falling to eventual national champion Maryland 18-7 in the
semifinals.
The 1974 Generals followed the cue of the 1973 team and marched through
the season undefeated. The Generals defeated Navy 11-9 in the opening round,
but had their dream season ended with an 11-10 loss to eventual national champion
Johns Hopkins.
Graduation depleted the 1975 squad and the Generals were just 7-6 with three
weeks remaining in the season. W&L closed out the regular season by beating Roanoke, Rutgers and Virginia to qualify for the tournament and then posted perhaps
the biggest win in W&L lacrosse history. In the opening round of the tournament the
Generals upset No. 1 ranked Johns Hopkins 11-7, ending the Blue Jays 27-game
home winning streak. Maryland bounced W&L 15-5 in the semifinals, but it was quite
a finish.
Emmer led W&L to the tourney in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1980, but the Generals
were knocked out of the tourney in the first round in each of those years.
From 1983 to 1986 W&L posted four straight losing seasons. Prior to the 1987
season, W&L, which had not offered athletic scholarships while competing in Division
I, moved to Division III.
The move paid immediate dividends as Dennis Daly’s 1987 squad went 11-4
and beat Roanoke 19-11 in the opening round of the tourney before falling 17-4 to
Ohio Wesleyan in the semis.
Following a period of six losing seasons in seven years, Jim Stagnitta ushered
in the 1990’s with a 9-4 record and W&L is currently enjoying its best run of success
since the 1970s. In the last 16 years W&L has won 180 games, eight Old Dominion
Athletic Conference championships and been invited to the NCAA Division III tournament seven times. W&L has been nationally-ranked 15 of those 16 years, including
a No. 1 ranking for much of the 2001 season.

GENERALS LACROSSE
Gene McCabe looks to continue the Washington and Lee lacrosse tradition as
he begins his inaugural season as the Generals head coach in 2007.
Mike Cerino took over the program in 2002 and guided W&L to a pair of ODAC
titles in five seasons. Twice Cerino led the Generals to the NCAA Tournament,
including a semifinal finish in 2002 after posting a 14-4 overall record. His 2004
team advanced to the quarterfinals, also finishing with a 14-4 overall mark.
While the success of W&L’s teams has always been at the fore, individual
success has been a mainstay of the program as well. W&L players have received
All-America recognition a staggering 168 times since 1947.
W&L has had five players inducted into the National Lacrosse Foundation Hall
of Fame. Ted Bauer, '74, a three-time All-American, became W&L's first inductee
in 1992. Skeet Chadwick, '74, a two-time All-American goalie and the 1974 Kelly
Award winner, was inducted in 1993. Skip Lichtfuss, '74, a three-time All-American,
was inducted in 1994 and Tom Keigler '77, a three-time All-American defensemen,
was inducted in 1999. Jack Emmer received his induction to the hall in 2005.

PLAYING FACILITIES
Wilson Field serves as the home stadium for the Washington and Lee men's
lacrosse program.
Wilson Field is named after William L. Wilson, president of the University from
February 1897 until his death in October 1900.
Wilson Field initially consisted of the main athletic field and a small set of bleachers. The field was improved in 1923 and a 3,000-seat stadium was added in the spring
and summer of 1924. W&L lacrosse has gone 101-24 at home since 1990.
With an expansion in 1929 and refurbishments over the years, Wilson Field now
has a seating capacity of 7,000. The locker room area under the stadium recently
underwent a $1.2 million renovation to provide new locker, equipment and training
rooms.
The field has served as the host site for numerous NCAA Division I lacrosse
tournament games and also served as the host site for the 1970 and 1980 North-South
All-Star games.
During inclement weather, the Generals will also play and practice at the W&L Turf
Field. A 230' x 400' lighted, multi-purpose synthetic surface field, the facility features
seating for 350 spectators, a press box, two scoreboards, and a storage building for
stowing away equipment. The field was completed during the fall of 2000 by Cannon
Architects and Clough-Harbour and Associates at a cost of 2.48 million dollars.
