FINAT celebrates 30th Label Awards Competition at its Annual Congress
Category winners to represent a great variety of industries and technologies
The Hague, The Netherlands – June 14th, 2010 - FINAT, the world-wide association representing the interest of
the self-adhesive labelling industry, announced the winners of its annual label awards competition. In this 30th
edition, containing a great number of highly commended contributions, both ‘Best in Show’ and ‘Printing
Processes Group Winner’ award went to Pilot Italia, Italy for its Barceló Rum labels.
The judging panel liked the dramatic looking label, using a combination of UV flexo and offset litho with great
embossing. “We consider this a truly regal label that makes good use of the metallised paper substrate, “said
Tony White, chairman of the panel. “This label has an immediate shelf appeal evoking lazy days under the palm
trees and the sugar fields of the Dominican Republic, home of Barceló Rum since 1929.”
With its unusual design, the Illusion Box from Kimbells Pack in the Philippines brings interesting opportunities for
differential branding.” It won the special jury award because the application shows how the printer has been able
to differentiate himself from the pack,” Tony White continued.
Organizers have witnessed a recent trend towards more entries for the Marketing and End-users Group (180
entries). It is the cosmetics group within this category that holds this year’s winner with the ‘no label look’ label
from Skanem Liverpool in the United Kingdom for Colgate Palmolive Sublime. According to the jury the label has
a “nice emotional visual effect which evokes purity.”
The non-adhesive application group winner is Turkey-based Etimag Etiket with a nice example of the offset litho
process on film; a colourful sleeve making good use of vibrant refreshing colours for Balea body lotion.
With ‘Creativity and Innovation: the way for tomorrow’ being the main theme of the congress this year, it is
worthwhile mentioning that last year’s winner in the category innovation, Schreiner Group GmbH, Germany has
been selected again. This category awards new applications or products that are not covered in the other
categories. The company has developed an integrated printed electronic device using wireless and
electroluminescence technology combined with a self-adhesive application.
FINAT celebrated its 30th label award competition; a jubilee edition that has received the greatest number of
entrees ever. In the past decade there has been an increase of 150%, while this year alone there has been a 10%
entry increase, i.e. a total of 325 entries from 55 different companies, with the greatest number of contributions
coming from India, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The judging panel included industry experts from Turkey,
Spain and the United Kingdom completed with a Dutch member judging purely on the design of the labels.
This year the FINAT label awards competition chalked up 20 winners. Many of these are being entered into the
World Label Awards competition that is taking place in conjunction with Labelexpo in Chicago (US) later this year.
From last year’s FINAT award winners, six became a World Label Award winner including Schreiner Group,
schäfer-etiketten, Collotype, Amberley Labels, Skanem Hobro and Tapp Technologies.

“A highly refined image with a nice dragon embossment. This quality label uses all the
elements to present quality, gold foil, a signature in gold the sharply defined crest. The
black branding band although vertical is very authoritative. This uses offset litho to great
advantage. A well executed label”

“A very busy and colourful label with bold abstract designs. The intelligent use of gold foil
coupled with embossing
adds a real feel of quality to the label. The spot varnishing gives a nice tactile feel to the

“ A simple label in which the Rial logo is very prominent making the brand the main
element. The illustration of the olive reflects the name of the product. And has its own way
of visualising the product. The green type is sharp and legible. A good result for flexo.”

“ A bold label which is unmistakeably Mobil. Very authoritative and expresses quality. An
interesting background design sets this label apart from the normal oil products. The racing
car adds even more credibility. A nice flexo job ”

“A very nice “no label look” label. It expresses the softness of the product along with the
authority of the brand. Nice emotional visual effect which evokes purity. The label matches
the product in colour and makes the central white words stand out against the filling.”

the logos. The message is clear and concise. Nice vignettes and very sharp small type. Good

“What seems a straightforward label is in fact a complex label with various anti tampering
techniques preventing misuse of the label. The label is used to verify that a motor vehicle has
passed its official emissions test. The security features prevent the transference of the

“Small but beautifully formed is one way of describing this booklet. The offset litho printing is
very good. The 5 pages compact down to take up the minimum space on the container. The
illustration of the cow and the cat are very natural.”

“A colourful way of attracting the attention of children. A whole range of characters from the
Pokémon Nintendo series. The recognisable logo adds to the “real one “ guarantee.” Nice in
register printing gives the stickers a quality feel.”

“An unusual design when properly used adds interesting opportunities for differential
branding. It needs to be
experienced first hand to gain the full effect. Several printing processes were used. The
application shows how this printer can differentiate himself from the pack.”

authenticity. The logo is very prominent and the contrast between the silver substrate and the
red surrounds brings the label alive. The design draws the eye to the centre of the label”

“The illustration on this label shows us a view of the fresh tropical fruits used to
manufacture this soap. The brand reversed out of the silver ink. The very fine type is
extremely well printed and is very legible. You might be forgiven for thinking it is a fruit
drink!!”

“A soft gentle looking label with very sharp lettering and logos. A good example of screen
printing. The design expresses trust and care with the right balance between quality and
care. The use of a “braille” varnishing to give the label a tactile feel adds to its credibility.”

“This label was awarded full marks for its design components with a strong brand name
high on the label. A nice soft illustration of a vineyard with Charlotte’s house in the

embossing added extra quality to the final result.”

with plenty of information about the product. Printed digitally on a metallised paper gives the
