C O M NATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORTS The following subcommittee reports are from HBASE National Director, Kim Hefner-Hines (Allen Homes, Inc.) and Paul Nelsen (Paul Nelsen Construction), who recently attended the NAHB Spring Board in Washington DC. ASSOCIATE’S OUTREACH NETWORK (AON) MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Has a NEW LOOK, accompanied by a new monthly newsle er called the “Associate Connec on”. Associates (along with builders and EO’s) are welcome to sign up to get this mely informa on sent directly to your inbox. E‐mail [email protected] to get on the list. Monica has also transformed the AON to be a sharing of informa on between Associates in various states...in D.C., our topics included how to recruit, engage and retain members. We can learn so much from other local associa ons as to what fresh ideas they are using to involve associate members. Our membership commi ee has joined forces with the Associates commi ee to provide sample le ers that Associates can send out to Builders that they work with to encourage them to join NAHB. We’ll be working on this throughout the summer and fall. It’s a simple ask with the help of the le ers, which can be given a local “feel” when sent. Another highlight of our Membership Commi ee is that we’re s ll working on Structured Dues Payments. A task force has been working harder than ever to make this happen within the next year. Lastly, we are working on a Gen X/Gen Y task force to provide a “Toolkit” to locals that will help them not only recruit, but also INVOLVE and ENGAGE the younger member. We hope to have a preliminary report by Fall Board that will provide a good deal of informa on on this topic. DESIGNATIONS & TRAINING SUBCOMMITTEE Con nues to work with staff and the Board of Governors to provide a reduced cost Cer fied Graduate Associate (CGA) course at either Fall Board or IBS. Using our own Associate Member Instructors, we’re hoping to get more Associates working towards their CGA designa on. Watch the AON newsle er for details. We will also be having another new a endee orienta on session at IBS 2015, so plan to a end that if you’re new to IBS or want to find out how to get involved with Associates! ASSOCIATES ADVOCACY SUBCOMMITTEE The associates con nue to be strong in their giving and wanted to remind you that advocacy is not just a monetary commitment, it can also be a commitment to simply get involved by making a phone call. We discussed how effec ve our in‐district mee ngs were a few months ago, and how more associates par cipated when we met with our congressional delega on right here in Sioux Falls. Another way to get involved is to sign up for BuilderLink thru NAHB…you will be no fied when there are important legisla ve ac ons that we need to e‐mail and/or call our Senators or Congresswoman to share our posi on on. The leadership of the full Associates Commi ee is thrilled to share that we got both Bylaw Amendments passed at Spring Board. These issues were being worked on for almost 3 years and are now approved. 1. Any Associate Member who has a ended 4 of the last 6 Associate Commi ee mee ngs at na onal will now be able to vote for our NAC (Na onal Associate Chair). What that means is that the Associates who a end mee ng a er mee ng (but are not standing members) will have a voice in the vote for who our Junior Officer will be. 2. An Associate Member may now occupy one of the seats on NAHB’s Budget and Finance Commi ee, a commi ee whose previous makeup was all builder members. - Kim Hefner BUILDING MATERIALS SUBCOMMITTEE Glenn Harrison of the US Department of Jus ce An trust Division gave an update on pending domes c drywall an trust li ga on. A number of cases have been filed claiming drywall manufacturers conspired to increase drywall prices. It seems it is very difficult to prove this. The so wood lumber agreement expires in October 2015; NAHB con nues to watch this. CONSTRUCTION LIABILITY, RISK MANAGEMENT AND BUILDING MATERIALS SUBCOMMITTEE Felicia Watson, NAHB staff, gave an update on OSHA’s silica rule. OSHA has been working on developing a new rule to address occupa onal exposures to respirable crystalline silica. In September of 2013 OSHA issued its proposed rule to general industry, mari me and construc on. OSHA is proposing to reduce the PEL for silica for construc on work from the current level of 250g/m3 to 50g/m3. OSHA has also proposed an ac on level of 25g/m3, which triggers the standard’s exposure monitoring provisions. CONSTRUCTION SAFETY & HEALTH COMMITTEE NAHB con nues to work with OSHA on this silica sand ruling and they have also asked OSHA to withdraw this rule. NAHB legal staff recommended we talk with our local Congressmen and women and let them know the impact this will have on the price of housing - Paul Nelsen H B A N E W S · A U G U S T 2 0 1 4 09 SEPTEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 AT 5:00PM LOCATED AT THE DISTRICT (On the pa o, weather permi ng) GOLF OUTING AT D A K O TA D U N E S Dakota Dunes Country Club GOLF RULES Combined 2‐person best ball blind draw. Water systems with less than six feet of cover are susceptible to freezing during cold weather months. It is the responsibility of the Water Division to ensure compliance with this ordinance in order to protect the interest of the water distribution system and our customers. When the Water Division is called to make a final adjustment to the curb box elevation and it is determined that the cover requirement over the water service from finished grade has not be achieved, the City will not set a water meter. The contractor will need to take the appropriate steps to correct the deficiency and notify the City such that a re-measurement of the water service depth can be made.
