A method for comparing appreciation results of interventions realized with a process of
participatory design and a “traditional” intervention for noise reduction one, has been
evaluated.
The comparison has been carried out through the definition of objective and subjective
criteria.
The case-study used for the comparison is the intervention in "M. L. King" School, consisting in
a noise barrier, realized in 2007.

CONCLUSION
The OBJECTIVE COMPARISON shows that:
the intervention for "Don Minzoni" School is certainly positive;
the intervention for "Don Minzoni" School shows a deepen and critical analysis of the acoustic
and non-acoustic situation in the scenario ante-operam;
the intervention for "Don Minzoni" School has been useful to consider and solve also nonacoustical critical issues;
The “traditional” intervention design for “M.L.King” School is certainly useful to reduce the noise,
but it has not considered other issues and factors connected to the use of the courtyard.
The SUBJECTIVE COMPARISON shows that:
the subjective analysis is not so representative for “M.L.King” School because the users haven’t
joined to the design and implementation of the intervention (date: 2005-2007);
However it is possible to make a general assessment of the effectiveness of the intervention in
“Don Minzoni” School: almost all the criteria are considered as at least adequate and in most
cases also as good, attesting the effectiveness of the participatory design method.
