S Section B ports Wednesday, June 15, 2016 The McLeod County Chronicle Glencoe wins Montevideo VFW Tournament By Tom Carothers Sports Editor With five wins in its first five games, the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team has begun its season in fine form. Not even a full week into its season, 5102 has already claimed a bit of hardware by winning the Montevideo Tournament on Saturday, June 11. Glencoe topped Morris 112 and bested tourney host Montevideo 13-1 to earn the championship trophy. Starting pitcher Carsen Streich tossed all seven innings against Morris, striking out 14 batters, while walking two with five hits and two unearned runs allowed. Taylor Schauer paced Glencoe’s potent attack at the plate by going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Spencer Lepel also went 3for-5, logging one RBI and one run scored. Streich, Dane Schwirtz and Gabe Roepke all scored twice, while Korey Johnson posted two RBI in the victory. Schauer started and went all five innings in the Montevideo win, striking out six while allowing one earned run on six hits and no walks. The hosts recorded their lone run in the opening frame before 5102 roared back with nine runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth. Lepel was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Schwirtz was 3for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Johnson also posted three RBI, with Streich and Schauer each scoring twice as Glencoe packed the statsheet. The tournament victory followed a pair of wins to open the season last week, with 5102 winning 6-1 at DasselCokato on Tuesday, June 7, and 3-0 against visiting Mound the next day. Schauer started and earned the complete-game win in the season opener against DasselCokato, striking out 10 batters VFW Turn to page 2B Submitted photo The Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team won the Montevideo Tournament on Saturday, June 11. Brewers take two of three By Tom Carothers Sports Editor After suffering a rough loss at Hutchinson to start off last week, the Glencoe Brewers bounced back to claim a pair of close wins over Crow River Valley League (CRVL) opponents to remain smack dab in the middle of the West Division standings. Not a lot went right for Glencoe in a 15-0 non-league loss at Hutchinson on Wednesday, June 8, as the Brewers committed four errors while accumulating just two hits against their neighbors to the northwest. Brandon Ebert logged a single and Gannon Jordahl swatted a double to account for the entirety of Glencoe’s offense. Starting pitcher Derek Bratsch took the loss for the Brewers. Glencoe was quick to get back on the good foot, however, rallying from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to defeat St. Boni 6-4 at Vollmer Field on Thursday, June 9. After Mason Goettl scored in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull the Brewers to within 4-2, Gannon Jordahl’s three-run home run in the seventh put the hosts ahead for good at 5-4. Derek Bratsch tallied Glencoe’s Brewers Turn to page 2B Chronicle photos by Tom Carothers Monahan takes seventh at state meet Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Maddie Monahan wrapped up her junior year by placing seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at the Class A state track and field meet on Saturday, June 11, at Hamline University in St. Paul. Monahan finished the final race in a time of 46.51 seconds as temperatures hovered around 90 degrees Saturday evening. In the preliminary round, she waited out a 90-minute weather delay to run a time of 46.97, which seeded her ninth for the finals. Back in May, Monahan set a new Wright County Conference record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.12 – bettering the previous standard of 46.2, which had been set in 1993. Plato improves to 9-3 Chronicle photo by Tom Carothers Plato Blue Jays first baseman Joe Nix arrives safely at home as outfielder Kyle Panning rounds third base en route to also scoring in a 21-0 defeat of New Germany on Sunday, June 12, at Blue Jay Stadium in Plato. By Tom Carothers Sports Editor There was no need for nailbiting last week as the Plato Blue Jays bested a pair of Crow River Valley League (CRVL) competitors by a combined score of 32-0 to improve to 9-3 on the season. The Blue Jays, who enter this week on a five-game winning streak, recorded their third shutout victory of the season in an 11-0 defeat of host Cologne on Tuesday, June 7. Topping that, Plato returned home for the first time since May 25 and blasted visiting New Germany 21-0 on Sunday, June 12. The Blue Jays have yet to give up a run in the month of June. On the field, Plato wasted little time asserting its will on Cologne, putting up seven runs in the second inning, three more in the fifth and one final tally in the seventh en route to the abbreviated victory. Matt Odegaard posted four RBI on a pair of home runs to pace the Blue Jays. Both he and Tony Beringer went 2-for4 with two runs scored as part of Plato’s nine-hit attack, with Beringer notching two RBI. Chris Odegaard went 2-for-3 and crossed home plate twice in the win. Starting pitcher Cody Hallahan claimed the win after five innings of two-hit, one-walk ball; he struck out four batters before giving way to relievers Chris Odegaard and Adam Prehn, each of whom pitched one inning. Back on their home field five days later, the Blue Jays broke open a 6-0 game with seven runs in the fifth inning and eight more in the sixth in- ning to claim the three-touchdown triumph. Of the 21 RBI to be had, four went to Matt Odegaard, with three apiece going to Tyler Lang, Chris Odegaard, Ben Slater and Kyle Panning. Panning also hit the lone home run of the contest. Starter Chris Odegaard struck out nine batters over six innings, allowing three hits and four walks to earn the win, with Zack Stockman finishing off the Dutchmen with a scoreless, two-strikeout seventh. Plato, now 9-1 in CRVL play, takes a break from league action this week to take part in the Miller High Life Invitational, hosted by Arlington and Gaylord, June 17-19. The Blue Jays open the Invite against Owatonna at 6:45 p.m. Friday at Arlington. The McLeod County Chronicle, www.glencoenews.com, Wednesday, June 15, 2016, page 2B Brownton loses twice By Lori Copler Editor The Brownton Bruins suffered two losses in their two most recent games. The Bruins hosted Green Isle Wednesday, June 8, with the Irish defeating their hosts 7-1 in a Crow River Valley League (CRVL) game. The two teams battled through four scoreless innings before Brownton put the first run on the scoreboard in the fifth on an RBI single by Seth Schuette. The Irish knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, and went ahead 2-1 with a run in the seventh. Green Isle rallied for five runs in the eighth to ice the win. Brownton had seven hits on the game, with two each by Matt Schwichtenberg and Spencer Glaeser and one each by Dylan McCormick, Nick Heller and Schuette. Josh Wendlandt started for Brownton and gave up one run in six innings as he struck out two, allowed no hits, and walked one. Tate Lange was tagged with the loss in two innings of relief, giving up six runs, four of which were earned, on four hits and two walks. Lange struck out one. Reggie Vacek threw the final frame, giving up no runs and no hits as he struck out one. Mac Zachow was awarded the win for the Irish. In eight innings, he allowed one run, scattered seven hits and struck out five. Alex Twange recorded two Ks in an inning of relief. The Bruins traveled to Raymond Sunday for a nonleague game, ending up on the short end of a 9-8 score. Both sides were knocking the hide off the ball with Raymond garnering 15 hits and Brownton getting 11. Lucas Doelger turned in a three-for-four performance for Brownton with three singles, while the remaining eight hits were scattered among Deryk Randt, Schwichtenberg, McCormick, Taylor Schuette, Brad Daak, Vacek and Bryce Lindeman. The Bruins rotated through four pitchers, with starter McCormick getting tagged with the loss. McCormick threw two innings and gave up one run on three hits, struck out three and walked two. Grams pitched two innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits. Heller threw three innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits as he struck out two and walked two. Vacek hurled the final inning, giving up one hit. Raymond starter Tyler Knott earned the win in a five-inning outing, giving up their hits and striking out three. Cole Christensen threw one inning and allowed two runs on three hits as he struck out one and walked one. Cal Kosminskes threw the last inning and gave up four runs on two hits as he struck out one and walked one. The Bruins are now 4-5 in the CRVL and 6-5 overall. They travel to Norwood tonight, host LeSueur Friday and then are on the road again Sunday to Carver for a 2 p.m. game. They host New Germany Wednesday, June 22. Chronicle photo by Tom Carothers Brownton Bruins starting pitcher Josh Wendlandt tossed six no-hit innings in an eventual 7-1 loss to Green Isle on Wednesday, June 8. VFW Continued from page 1B while allowing one earned run on nine hits and one walk in seven innings. Lepel swung the biggest bat in the contest, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Johnson and Streich also had two hits apiece, with Johnson, Roepke, Tyler Siewert and Dylan Richter each scoring once. Against Mound, Johnson claimed a complete-game shutout victory after dispersing seven hits while striking out three over six innings of work. Glencoe mustered up just three hits total – all singles – off the bats of Streich, Lepel and Joe Knudten, but com- bined with four errors committed by Mound, it was enough for victory. Roepke, Lepel and Knudten scored, with RBI going to Schwirtz and Siewert. Following the tournament, Glencoe was right back in action with a 4-2 home win over Hutchinson on Monday, June 13. Chandler Glaeser made it 5for-5 on complete-game wins for 5102, going six innings with three hits, one walk and zero earned runs allowed; he struck out three batters. Streich, Lepel, Roepke and Johnson each had one RBI, with Streich, Schwirtz, Lepel and Richter each scoring one time in the win. Al Frederickson and Gary Asche (Collins Township) explained that various properties incur a 45% increase in market value due to lake shore locality. They asked Council to consider centering Collins’ fire protection cost on actual market value which would then decrease their fire protection payment by $2,100 annually. Frederickson and Asche will contact all townships in the Brownton fire protection jurisdiction; if all the other townships approve and each are willing to supplement this $2,100 deficit, Council said they would consider the request. CDS Auditor Paul Harvego presented the 2015 audit report; audit information is available in the City Office for review. Discussions regarding zoning ordinances, variances, permits, etc. resulted in Council setting a working meeting to review zoning processes. Justin Black of SEH, reviewed the televising results of the central trunk storm sewer line. Based on the infor- mation from the televising a map was prepared identifying the storm sewer location and lengths of pipe materials and sizes. It was noted on the map that the system consists of numerous pipe sizes and materials. As part of the McLeod County Jail Expansion Project, one block of new street, Judd Avenue, will be constructed from 10 t h Street to 11 t h Street. A segment of brick arch structure in poor condition is located below the proposed street and warrants replacement prior to constructing a new street over it. It is recommended to replace the brick arch pipe with a round reinforced concrete pipe and to complete computer modeling of the Central Trunk Storm Sewer. Hjerpe Contracting has quoted $42,767.00 to replace approximately 80 feet of the brick arch pipe with a 48 inch concrete pipe. The County would contribute $8,000. Costs could further be reduced by city staff completing some of the work. Discussion let to Councilor Ziemer motioning to move forward with the replacement of approximately 80 feet of the brick arch pipe with 48” concrete pipe. Councilor Perschau seconded. All members voted in favor. Jon VanDamme, on behalf of the Glencoe Days Committee, made the annual requests for assistance for the 2016 Glencoe Days Celebration. Waive the parade permit, amusement license and fireworks permit , assistance from city parks department for setting up and tearing down, approve 3.2 beer license for the two day celebration, extend park hours to 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, Councilor Schrupp motioned to approve the requests as stated. Councilor Dietz seconded. All members voted in favor. Ed Dostal of 9604 Hwy 22 and Al Gruenhagen of 9524 Hwy 22 made the request to connect to city water and sewer system. Neither party is requesting annexation at this time. They are located within easy access to the GlenTech Industrial Park lines. A bore under Highway 22 would have to be made for one, six inch service line that would be split off to a four inch for each party. They would be required to pay WAC and SAC fees of $250.00 each. There is currently no precedent in lieu of annexation. PWD Schreifels and City Administrator Mark Larson are recommending a surcharge of $9.50 for water and $9.00 for sanitary sewer per month. Mayor Wilson along with Councilor Schrupp stated that this should be discussed further at Personnel and Legislative to review ordinance language and policies currently in place and what possibly may have to change to allow the request. By Nathan Winter June is dairy month Source: Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Minnesota Dairy Industry. AMD. (June 3, 2016). June is dairy month in Minnesota. Minnesota dairy farms produce a lot of milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products. Minnesota’s dairy farms are so big that it ranks sixth when compared to other states. Since there are 3,470 dairy farms in Minnesota, it ranks eighth in milk production throughout the nation. There are 460,000 head of dairy cows in Minnesota and those cows produce 9.5 billion pounds of milk every year. The five counties that produce the most milk in Minnesota are Stearns, which has 70,000 head of cattle; Winona, which has 29,000 head of cattle; Morrison , which has 28,000 head of cattle; Stevens, which has 22,000 head of cattle; and Wabasha, which has 21,000 head of cattle. Meeker and McLeod counties combined have a total of 17,400 head of milk cows. Dairy production in Minnesota is the second largest livestock sector in the state, which accounts for onefourth of total livestock cash receipts. Swine is the largest sector and accounts for 36 percent of total livestock cash receipts. Dairy accounts for 12 percent of Minnesota’s total agricultural cash receipts; this is because Minnesota’s milk production increased by 4 percent from 2014 to 2015. In 10 years (2005-2015,) milk production increased by 16 percent. However, dairy cow numbers decreased by about 2 percent, so each cow was producing more milk every year. Dairy also has a great economic impact on the state. At the farm level, dairy production has a “multiplier effect” of $1.7 for every dollar of output. Minnesota’s dairy produces economic activities in other economic sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, trade, services, finance, etc. The output impact that Minnesota’s dairy production had at the farm level is $3.8 billion. Dairy production in Minnesota also created 9,457 jobs. Along with producing dairy products for the country, Minnesota also exports a lot of these dairy products, ranking number eighth among all U.S. states. In 2014, Minnesota exported $322 million in dairy products, which is up 5 percent from 2013. Fun facts about the dairy industry: • 98 percent of U.S. dairy farms are family owned farm businesses; • The average dairy farm has about 200 cows; • The average dairy cow produces 6.5 gallons of milk per day; • A cow produces 350,000 glasses of milk in a lifetime; • Fresh milk will stay fresher longer if you add a pinch of salt to each quart; and • More than 1,000 new dairy products are introduced each year. Nathan Winter is the farm Extension agent for McLeod and Meeker counties. Sibley Co. Court The following cases were heard in Sibley County District Court May 26, Judge Arlene M.
