The Carillon - Trinity Springfield
The Carillon Page 1 The Newsletter of Trinity United Methodist Church The Carillon August 2015 Volume 87 Issue 8 A retired pastor I called on years ago referred to a philosophy he had that we will find the right book at the right time. Well, at Annual Conference this past June I was looking at the Cokesbury display, determined not to buy a book, and there in front of me was Consider the Birds: A Provocative Guide to Birds of the Bible by Debbie Blue. The right book at the right time. Inside this issue: Pastor’s Notes Front Our People, Our Church *Celebrations *Thank yous *Prayer List *Rose Window *Altar Flowers *Attendance *Electronic Giving * Twitter 2-3 So yes, I bought the book and have just about finished it. Blue asks the reader to consider birds of the Bible in a whole new light with rich theological reflection. In the introduction she notes “People identify with birds. We watch them, research them, tell stories about them, and in the process we explore our humanity and inhumanity – mystery and manners. They’re funny and dirty, noble and shifty – much like us.” So this summer I extend this invitation from Debbie Blue to… Consider the dove, the image of God descending on Jesus at his baptism. More like it was a gray rock dove, common in ancient Palestine. Outreach, Preaching Schedule 4 Birthdays , Theme, Caring Card 5 Children & Youth Ministry 6 Trustee Corner 7 Trinity’s Monthly Calendar 8 A Little Night Music 9 Back/Leadership Page 10 Consider the pelican, a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice due to a legend started in medieval bestiaries. Consider the quail, and Numbers 11 which tells the story of people tired of manna and craving meat. Consider the vulture, referred to in Hosea and Revelation , yet with a different representation by the ancient Egyptians who Blue tells us “saw a great ‘mother god’ – a huge, protective, high-flying goddess whose enormous wingspan could encompass and enfold everything.” Consider the eagle, often our “go-to” bird, but rarely Jesus’. Or look at the ostrich mentioned by Job, “I have become… a companion of ostriches.” Or what about the common house sparrow, though targeted for elimination throughout history, in the Bible they receives God’s love and shelter. Consider the Cock who famously crows three times alerting Peter to his betrayal of Christ, the hen to which Jesus compares himself. And finally… consider the ravens as Jesus directs us to do in Luke 12:24. Blue suggests Jesus is asking us to do more than “Get out your binoculars and take a stroll.” May you be reminded of God’s love for all creation as you consider the birds this summer. Blessings, Cathy MacGovern Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Joy and I want to thank everyone involved in the wonderful “send-off” on June 29th before the start of our renewal leave. We were deeply moved by the blessing offered at the end of the worship service, as well as the wonderful reception that followed in Asbury Hall. We were surprised to see how nicely decorated the hall was and having the chance to speak with so many of you after the service was very touching. The luncheon was delicious and the group song was great fun, a real “Trinity moment.” We have enjoyed many of the items in the “survival kit” already and your very generous “love offering” was overwhelming. Thank you to all who contributed to this offering and all who helped make the start of this leave so special. It was a joy-filled day. We are very grateful for all your love, support and generosity. The gift of this time is an extraordinary one and we believe it will be a period of renewal for us all. God bless you Trinity and have a wonderful summer. Your faithfulness is inspiring. We will be ready to join with you once again in the fall to continue our partnership in exciting ministry and mission! With Our Love, Pastor John and Joy Dear friends at Trinity church, Thank you very much for the beautiful flowers, they are holding up beautifully. Sincerely, Ted Dunn Page 2 Dear Trinity Family, Your cards and prayers and well wishes have buoyed me up and carried me through a three month ordeal. I am so grateful for your support. An illness has the power to drive us inward and make us feel alone. But you have wrapped me in your blessing and been a source of comfort and assurance that in Christ we are never alone. Bing Scherer Thank you to Edith Dorang for bringing the lovely pink prayer shawl for Janet and myself. There may be no connection…but Janet was asked to stand up...she did!! Then she was told to sit down...she did. That’s the first time in a year and a half since Janet’s stroke! Bless you all. Thanks, George and Janet Stephens We celebrate the news regarding an anonymous gift of $12,000 that is being made in support of Trinity's After School Program for the 2015-2016 school year. This extraordinary gift will ensure that this important ministry will be in a strong financial position for the coming year. As many of you know, the after school program is for middle school students and meets every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Trinity's facility from September through June. In addition to the participation of these students from the Forest Park neighborhood the program is supported by some very strong mentors who have "graduated out" of the program. They are now in high school, but continue to return, donating their time to support this initiative. Victoria Hibbard and Paul Johnson are the staff who do an excellent job leading the program. Trinity members volunteer regularly to offer additional support, leadership and guidance. Many young people's lives are blessed through this program, as are our own. We give God thanks for such generosity as well as the commitment and faithfulness of the donor. Congratulations to Matthew Authier who recently received his MBA from Norwich University. A young entrepreneur, Matt currently owns a franchise of Oxifresh in New York and was recently interviewed by Entrepreneur Magazine. 7/5 Adults 128, Children 12, Total 140 7/12 Adults 98, Children 13, Total 111 7/19 Adults 183, Children 27, Total 220 7/26 ) Adults 145, Children 22, Total 167 Grand total: Adults 554, Children 74, Total 628 Page 3 Rose Window, Altar Flowers, Block Party & Electronic Giving July Rose Window July 9– In memory of her mother Ruth Temple Harwood, from Jan Temple Metoxen. The Carillon Outreach & Volunteer Opportunities Mobile Food Bank The next Mobile Food Banks will be Wednesdays August 5th and 19th. Volunteers need to be in the church parking lot by 1:30pm for set up. We could use a few more volunteers for the two Wednesdays in August to replace those who are on vacation. If you can volunteer for this important ministry, please contact Marilyn at [email protected]. Fellowship Hour Opportunity We continue to need individuals to help with this ministry. Your contribution of any size is important. If you are willing to volunteer food or your time, please email Erica Weida and also contact Katherine Lovell. Thank you in advance. If you can volunteer to deliver flowers on Sundays following worship please contact Danny Holder at [email protected] or 636-2505. Thank you. The emergency food pantry is in need of many items for our neighbors less fortunate, such as: canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna fish, soups, peanut butter and jelly, snacks for children, cereal, crackers, rice, ketchup, mustard four and sugar. Items can be brought in each time you come to worship. It is a good way to remember this important ministry. Women’s Book Club News There will be no book club meetings for the months of July, August, & September. Caring Cards Ministry Caring Cards Ministry continues on Sundays next to the Connection Point. We still could use a couple of volunteers to staff the table and after Fellowship make sure the cards are collected and mailed. There will be a sign up sheet at the table. We also appreciate donations of stamps for this ministry. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Marilyn at marilyn @trinityspringfield.org Adult Sunday School: Because of vacation schedules, adult Sunday school will be taking a vacation until August 16th. During the week of July 12th, many Trinity youth and Page 4 their adult mentors traveled to Belle Haven, Virginia for a week long experience of gleaning potatoes with the Society of St. Andrews Harvest of Hope. Harvest of Hope is a mission work camp with deep Biblical roots. Designed for youth, young adults and intergenerational groups, Harvest of Hope emphasizes the actual salvage and distribution of produce that has been left in the field after harvest. It educates participants about the realities of world hunger and involves them in worship and teamwork to renew the church and serve the poor. During the mission in Virginia, our youth experienced a world hunger meal and in turn would like to share what they learned about food insecurity in the US and across the world. We invite you to join us: TUMC World Hunger Meal Sponsored by the Youth Mission Trip Team Saturday, August 22, 2015 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm Cost: $5/ per person or $20/ per family maximum Proceeds will be donated to The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and The Society of St. Andrews Harvest of Hope Foundation Sign up for this important event in Asbury Hall during the coffee hour on Sundays. “Tell the Kids I Love Them.” --God It is the whole church’s responsibility to help teach our children that God does indeed love them. Are you able to fulfill one of these needs? Each little bit contributes to the formation of the next generation of disciples. We had a great response to our first “help wanted” list, but we still have a few more opportunities. If you can help, please contact Monica Ardolino at [email protected] or Leslie Hastings at [email protected] (Please note Leslie’s middle initial in email address!). Teachers/co-teachers /substitutes for all grades Bulletin board decorator (occasional work, anytime the building is open) Greeter (at table in downstairs hallway, 8:45-10:15 on Sundays; could be split between two or three people) Coordinator of coloring pages and crayons in back of sanctuary (can be done whenever the sanctuary is open, once every few weeks) Nursery helper (perhaps once a month, on Sunday mornings) Bible Story Time helper (perhaps once a month, during worship) One additional Chapel Kids helper/leader (perhaps once a month, during worship) Page 5 Trinity’s New Theme, Summer Preaching Schedule and Birthdays Consider the birds… What have you noticed about birds so far this summer? I’ve heard people sharing about different kinds of birds they’ve seen. Others have talked about the sounds of the birds: the woodpecker, the cardinal, the mourning dove and so many others. As we continue to pay attention to all the birds around us hopefully you are also finding time to fold some origami cranes. Check out the large basket in the baptistery transept. It’s starting to fill! We’re folding cranes because of the story of Sadako Sasaki who after being exposed to the radiation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in World War II developed leukemia and began folding cranes after spending months in a nursing home. She hoped to fold a thousand cranes based on the ancient Japanese legend that if a person did so they would be granted a wish. You can find the full story on the internet. August 6th will mark the 70th anniversary of the A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima. While folding cranes please consider lifting up prayers for peace. Come by the table set up in the Baptistery in the sanctuary or in Asbury Hall where you can pick up directions or sit and fold cranes. You can also find instructions (even videos) online showing how to fold. While origami paper works well you can use paper around the house. We are blessed by birds in so many ways… enjoy your birdwatching this summer! “…But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 41:31 Cathy MacGovern, Worship Committee Chair August 2 Rev. Mark your calendars for this early opportunity to buy Christmas gifts for others and treats for you. We are asking for donations to be included in the silent and live auctions. Trustee Update: The pool has been filled, interior doors have been cut. Framing has started this week. The heating system is moving right along. Second Quarter Finance Message It seems impossible that we are already into August and are now enjoying our summer activities and vacations. We have had a great first half of the year in our life at Trinity and are closer to our target in financial giving. Thank you to all who have kept up their pledges and weekly giving to meet the day to day expenses of our church and our ministries. As of June 30, 2015, we have received $181,260 in pledges which is 8% more than this point in 2014 but still not quite where we want to be. Our total budgeted pledge giving is $406,000 and together we can meet that commitment. It is inspiring to see the change in our events at Trinity that match the warm weather at this time of year – Vacation Bible Camp, movie night, softball games, youth mission trip, A Little Night Music. The calendar is still full of our ministries with Sunday school and the mobile food bank. It is also exciting to know that the construction for the heating system and the community room is progressing and will be ready for us in the Fall. While many of us are out of town for periods of time during the summer months, we know that our work and the need for our gifts continues. It is wonderful that we can plug right back into ministries and services at Trinity when we return home. We have a growing group of members who have taken advantage of signing up for electronic giving via a link on our website: www.trinityspringfield.org. This is a great way for you to know your gifts are received on a regular basis to support our life together. The Second Quarter giving statements were sent in July to you via e-mail or regular mail. Please review them to be sure you are on target for your 2015 planned giving and contact Wendy Freels if you have any questions or concerns. (413) 737-5311 x202.
