PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
SAY GOODBYE TO BANQUET
By John McCoy
PPAGLA President
T
he board of directors was
sitting around the clubhouse the other night trying to figure out what it will
take to get you guys involved.
Every year, fewer and fewer
of you attend the awards banquet. It appears
the only people
who show up
are the folks
who are in the
running to
receive an
award. Or, they
are part of the
vital old guard of members
who enjoy seeing their friends,
and seeing award-winning photography first hand.
So, the board of directors is
going to take a chance and try
something new. Were going to
shake things up a little, and
blow off the awards banquet.
That’s right, you don’t care
about attending an awards ban-
quet. So, we don’t care about
having one. Forget it, we’re
done.
No plaques. No awards. No
contest. No gifts. And forget
about the $18,000 in prizes we
handed out last year. We ain’t
gonna do that again.
Wait a minute, strike that last
paragraph.
We will continue to reward
our contest winners with
plaques, cash and prizes. And
we will defiantly continue to
hand out tons of door prizes
and gifts. But we’re going to do
it in a different way.
On March 22, 2008,
PPAGLA will hold a daylong
seminar at Cal State Fullerton,
and follow it up with an awards
presentation and reception.
We will have speakers,
forums, and workshops. We will
have lighting seminars for video
and still shooters. We will have
workshops that address the
changing world of HD video,
and shooting video and stills for
the web. All that, and whatever
STOP THE PRESSES
else we can think of.
If you have an idea for a
workshop you would like to
attend, LET ME KNOW!
You can count on seeing vendors at the event who are interested in helping us get the job
done in the changing world of
visual reporting. Canon and
Nikon are onboard as sponsors.
In fact, they are thrilled to be
involved.
We are reaching out to other
journalism organizations for
workshops. The world is changing, the media is changing, and
the way PPAGLA does things
is going to change as well.
Note to the “Old Farts Club,”
and our treasured long-time
members: We want to see you
attend. You are the backbone of
our organization! We want to
chat you up at the reception,
and look forward to sitting with
you at the awards presentation.
As a matter of fact, we would
love to have a forum where you
could talk about the old days of
shooting film.
And, we are defiantly looking forward to honoring the
next Lifetime Achievement
recipient.
So, let the archives show that
I was the President who killed
the awards banquet. I’ll take
the heat. But I think what we
have in mind will bring us all
together in a constructive way
that will be entertaining, educational and most importantly,
FUN!

suggestions to:

DODGER NIGHT:
TICKETS AVAILABLE
Send in SASE for Sept. 26 game
T
he Los Angeles Dodgers have generously agreed to host the Press
Photographers for our annual Dodger Night on the evening of
Wednesday, Sept. 26.
The Dodgers will face the Colorado Rockies in the waning days of
the regular season as they storm their way to a potential seed in postseason play. In other words, the Dodgers are close to a playoff berth!
PPAGLA Board Member Jeff Lewis is charge of getting tickets to all
of you who are interested in attending. The Dodgers have generously
agreed to give us 150 tickets, and Jeff will mail them out on a first
come-first served basis.
You can request up to 4 tickets by sending a self addressed, stamped
envelope to:
Jeff Lewis
PO BOX 6190
Long Beach, CA 90806
Jeff will fill your request, and stuff them in your envelope and get
them out to you. We will not receive the tickets until Sept. 17, so get
your requests in now, but don’t expect to see them until around the
21st.
So send your SASE soon, and we will see you at the ball park!
Just One More, Jr • September 2007
This just in: The Just One More Yearbook will
be hitting the streets by the end of October!
Book publisher Peter Levshin and editor Joel
Lugavere have done an outstanding job of putting
the yearbook together and this edition will be better than ever.
Not only will we continue to place books in
every police station and firehouse in Los Angeles,
we will hold a book party to get them into your
hands as soon as they arrive.
The exact date of delivery is not known, however Peter said that we can expect the books to
arrive in 8 weeks or less.
So the question is, are you ready for a book
party? The board was thinking about having a
pizza party. Somebody suggested we do a good
old-fashioned Bill Beebee fish fry, but Bill said
he hasn’t been fishing in a while.
So, what kind of party floats your boat?
Wanna have pizza and beer? Or, since Halloween
is just around the corner, how does a costume
party sound?
Send your suggestions to:
[email protected]
Maybe Joel and I will just stuff them all in the
mail, or have our board members drop off books
where you work. But the PPAGLA board of
directors is leaning toward... PARTY TIME!
We will continue to
reward out contest
winners with plaques,
cash and prizes. ... But
we’re going to do it in a
different way

IN MEMORY
5Gunderson captured this harness racing photo in his early days at Santa Anita Race Track.
PPAGLA MOURNS JUDD GUNDERSON
Judd was always very
good at what he did,
whether it was lab work
at the Times, or shooting
pictures at Santa Anita.
T
shooting 35 mm footage for
newsreel services.
After the war, Judd started up
a photo business with Army pal
Jim Madison and began shooting
social events and weddings.
In 1947, Judd married and
became a photographer at Santa
Anita and Hollywood Park racetracks. He also shot publicity
photos for the Los Angeles
Rams. His experience led to a
job working for the Los Angeles
Times.
Judd worked on the city desk
at the Times, and eventually
became the supervising photographer for a newly formed section of the paper that was known
as View. It was an interesting
new assignment for him as he
switched gears from being a
news-oriented shooter, into a feature photographer who covered
entertainment assignments and
worked in the studio shooting
fashion, food, and a variety of
other photo illustrations.
Former PPAGLA President
Garry Watson remembers Judd
as a happy-go-lucky guy who
was never down. He was particularly close with Gary’s brother,
the late Harry Watson. The pair
spent many afternoons out on the
links playing golf.
Gary said, “Judd was always
very good at what he did,
whether it was lab work at the
Times, or shooting pictures at
Santa Anita.” Judd retired from
the L.A. Times in 1981.
Judd is survived by his wife
Deane, son Guy, and granddaughters Amy and Emily.
Just One More, Jr • September 2007
he PPAGLA mourns the
death of one of our longtime members, Judd
Gunderson, who passed away in
February 2004.
Although some time has
passed since Judd died, the board
of directors felt it was important
to celebrate the life of one of our
outstanding members.
Originally from Superior,
Wisc., Judd moved to Glendale,
Calif., at the age of 14 in 1930.
He attended Hoover High School,
and while growing up became
interested in photography.
Judd’s father owned a laundry
business, but that wasn’t for
Judd. Having always set his
sights on a career in photography, he found employment at
Lockheed Aircraft in the photoengraving department.
During World War II, he
joined the Army and was trained
in cinematography at the Army’s
motion picture school in Astoria,
New York. Judd served most of
his tour of duty as part of the
Army’s Signal Corps in Europe,
and as the war ended, found himself in Germany and France
