Leading the Way to
Lasting Change
Together, We’re Getting Things Done Loyal Contributors
Have you given to United Way for 10 years or more? If so, you are one of
our treasured Loyal Contributors.
Perhaps you gave to another United Way before coming to Randolph County.
It doesn’t matter where you have given, or how much. Your gifts have all
made a difference, and we want to thank you.
If you are a Loyal Contributor, please let us know. Simply check the Loyal
Contributor box on your pledge card and include the year you recall first
giving to United Way.
I have supported United Way all these
years because I prefer that the programs
supported by United Way spend their time
serving the community instead of raising
funds.
Lillian Jordan
Donar since 1965
Thank You
The Board of Directors of United Way of Randolph County
would like to thank everyone who donated time and dollars to
this year’s campaign. We are so blessed to live in a community
that responds to the needs of its neighbors. Your gifts enable
United Way to support eighteen agencies that provide health,
educational, and youth services for many within our
community.
The Board thanks all the businesses that supported the United
Way campaign and that allowed its employees to volunteer at
our community agencies. It is important to note that the local
United Way office continues to be diligent in managing its
expenses and controling costs.
Your commitment and generosity are invaluable to the lives of thousands of citizens of
Randolph County.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of United Way, Thank You
Elbert Lassiter
United Way Board President
Vicki and I were humbled and honored to serve as your
Uwharrie Society Chairs for 2014, and we want to say
“THANKS” to each and every one of our 2014 Uwharrie
Society supporters! Because of you and the Leadership example
you demonstrated, we surpassed our goal of $400,000 with an
amazing $423,141.93! You should all be proud of that, but more
important is what those dollars are doing every day to impact our
community in a positive way by providing needed services to
thousands of our fellow citizens, our neighbors, and our friends.
Again, a BIG “Thank You” to each of our donors for your
generous support and leadership, to our Uwharrie Society
Committee members for your tireless work, and to our United Way staff for all their help.
It was truly “OUR PLEASURE” to work with you!

AN INVITATION TO JOIN RANDOLPH
COUNTY’S MOST INFLUENTIAL PHILANTHROPISTS
It takes an entire community to make a difference. United Way of
Randolph County’s Leadership Society members come from all corners
of our community and from every sector of our business, professional, and
retiree populations. They are all leaders, each influential in his or her own way,
who want to help others and make our community stronger.
Our Leadership Donors are passionate, committed, and capable, and they are
partnering with United Way to tackle challenges that directly affect our
economic vitality and quality of life.
Joining The Uwharrie Society and Alexis de Tocqueville Societies
identifies you as a leader who is changing our community through
Education
Financial Stability
Helping struggling families become financially stable, with sufficient income to be self-reliant
Good Health
Helping children enter school ready to learn, and keeping them on track to graduate and create a more competitive workforce
Providing access to quality healthcare and elder-care support services
That’s the power of being a Leadership Donor at United Way
Together, we can do more than any of us can do alone.
AN INVITATION TO JOIN OUR REGION’S MOST
INFLUENTIAL PHILANTHROPISTS
WHEN
LEADERS UNITE,
everyone BENEFITS.
We all have community issues and concerns we’re passionate about, and we give
because we want to make a difference in someone’s life. None of us can solve
problems or issues alone, but if we work together as a caring group, then we can
begin to create the changes we want to see.
No other organization has United Way’s ability to bring partner agencies, businesses,
community organizations, government, and volunteers together around a common
vision to make Randolph County the kind of community we all want.
Connect with Others Who Share
Your Commitment.
Focus on Local Issues
Having both grown up in this community, and
now raising our children here as well, we have
seen first-hand the positive impact United Way
agencies have had on people’s lives. Our support
for United Way is important to us as we want to
do everything we can to make Randolph County a
better place to live and work.
Randolph County is a wonderful place to live
and raise a family. By giving to United Way,
we are supporting local agencies who assist
local families.

Jesus teaches us to love one
another. This is one way we
can show that love.
To Live United improves the

entire communities.
Leadership Giving 2014
LEADERS don’t wait—they create the change they want to see.
Our Alexis de Tocqueville and Uwharrie Society members proudly wear the mantle of community leaders. Since 1994, they have inspired and motivated others to give, to advocate, and
to volunteer, and have provided significant financial resources to help United Way respond to
our community’s health and human service needs.
We are proud to recognize these dynamic and effective donors in this 2014 Leadership Giving
report. They include 226 of Randolph County’s most committed business and civic leaders who
give to United Way because they care about helping others and want to improve the quality of
life for us all. Together, their gifts represent well over one-third of total 2014 Campaign dollars.
To all of you, we say “Thank You” for helping United Way help people today in ways that will
bring lasting change to Randolph County. You make our community great.

ALEXIS DE
TOCQUEVILLE
SOCIETY
Together, We’re Getting Things Done In the 1800s, young French nobleman Alexis de Tocqueville came here to study our
young democracy. In the process, he learned about “associations”, and singled them
out as a distinguishing characteristic of American life. Instead of waiting for government
to fix social ills, as was customary in Europe, these groups of people—who planted
the seeds for today’s nonprofits-- banded together to bring about change themselves.
Today, that same spirit of individuals stepping forward to lead change continues
through United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society members. We applaud these
philanthropic leaders who are willing to serve as beacons for our community with
gifts of $10,000 or more.
The Uwharrie Chapter of The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was chartered in 1998. These
generous donors represent the highest level of giving among United Ways nationwide,
and join a national registry of philanthropic leaders who are changing the face of their
communities through United Way.

Because we have been blessed,
our philosophy has been to give
back more to our community
than we take from it, whether by
volunteering or through monetary
contributions. United Way gives
us the opportunity to accomplish
both.

The United Way of Randolph County
Endowment
The United Way of Randolph County Endowment provides
additional, sustainable resources that can help United
Way meet community needs in ways not possible through
our annual campaigns alone.
Through the Endowment, donors have an opportunity to
make bequests, memorial gifts, or other legacy gifts that
will continue to serve our community for generations to
come.
Anyone can be a philanthropist…all it takes is a caring heart.

Education is a cornerstone for success in school, work and life.
And it benefits our whole community. United Way looks at the
big picture: what resources are lacking or need strengthening,
and how we can address those gaps to keep kids on track to
graduation. To improve education, United Ways are helping
children and youth to:
• Start school ready to succeed

Helping children and youth

Financially stable people are more likely to have access
to quality heath care, provide a good education for their
children, and contribute to their local economies. To improve
financial stability in our community, United Way focuses on
building:
• Knowledge and support to better manage income and savings
• Skills and education to obtain jobs that provide a livable wage

Good health is an essential ingredient for individual success
and a thriving community. Healthy kids are more likely to succeed
in school. Our entire community will flourish when
all of our residents have access to public parks, playgrounds,
healthy foods and quality healthcare. United Way’s strategies
include expanding access to:
• Healthy foods
• Opportunities for physical activity
• Quality health care
Because great things happen when we LIVE UNITED.

EDUCATION
After his father was killed, JT began having trouble at school. His teacher
recommended a Communities In Schools mentor.
Arnold began coming every week to have lunch with JT and help with homework. Right
away, JT’s attitude and grades improved. JT and Arnold work on class assignments and
projects together, and enjoy ball games and other activities after school.
Sometimes JT visits Arnold at work. JT and Arnold have been together three years. Arnold has become a
trusted friend and role model, and has helped fill a void in JT’s life.
Communities in Schools connects community resources and volunteer mentors with schools to help young people
successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.
INCOME
Jerry ‘s stroke left him unable to work. His wife is disabled, and they couldn’t cover
his prescription drugs and still pay their household bills.
CUOC helped Jerry with food and medications for 3 months, and the Medical
Assistance Program staff searched for programs that could help with Jerry’s
medications long-term.
Jerry’s Medicaid was approved quickly and covered his drugs. He is so thankful for
CUOC’s help, and plans to volunteer at CUOC when his recovery is complete.
Christians United Outreach Center provides short-term crisis assistance with basic needs, and educational support
for individuals trying to become less aid-dependent
HEALTH
In 1996, I was in a wreck and was in a coma for three months. I also had some paralysis.
After 12 months in hospitals, I received a YMCA scholarship so I could work on regaining
as much strength as possible. I went every day to work out and exercise in the pool. I was
extremely weak, and could only curl 3 pounds.
Today, I still work out regularly. Now I can curl 12 lbs with my partially paralyzed left hand and 20 lbs
with my right.
The YMCA has strengthened my mind, body, and spirit. The scholarship made this possible.

HOW TO LIVE UNITED
We invite you to help others while leading real, lasting change in our community.
GIVE.
ADVOCATE.
VOLUNTEER.
So much depends on
your pledge. Your gift to
United Way will impact
our community in many
more ways than you might
think. Whether you choose
to give through your
workplace campaign,
or give an outright gift
of cash or stock, your money
will stay here and help
here.
You are the one that others
listen to. Your leadership
skills can inspire others to
be part of community change.
Lend your vision, your voice,
and your talents within a
caring community of
committed leaders.
Your expertise will lead the
way. Volunteer as an
individual. Organize a
volunteer activity, OR,
take on a longer-term
commitment as a board or
committee member. You’ll
instantly see the impact
you’re having in our
community.

I support United Way of Randolph
