FIRST IGCP 580 MEETING DECEMBER 2009
FIRST IGCP 580 MEETING MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY, CORRELATIONS AND PALEOENVIRONMENTS LIEGE, BELGIUM Meeting, field trip and training 2–3–4–5-6 DECEMBER 2009 Liège University, B20, Sart Tilman, Belgium http://www2.ulg.ac.be/geolsed/MS/meeting.htm Contact: [email protected] [email protected] VENUE The first IGCP 580 meeting will be held at Liège University Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 of December 2009 (plus a fieldtrip day on the Friday 4 and training on the Saturday 5 December). The city of Liège is situated in the valley of the river Meuse, near Belgium's eastern borders with the Netherlands (35km from Maastricht) and Germany (60km from Aachen), where the Meuse meets the Ourthe river. It is in the former "sillon industriel", the industrial backbone of Wallonia. The city is the principal economic and cultural centre of Wallonia and is well-known for its very crowded folk festivals (mostly in summer) and is renowned for its significant nightlife. Within the pedestrian zone, there is an area (100 m square called "Le Carré") with many lively pubs which are reputed to remain open until the last customer leaves (typically around 6 am). Another active area is the "Place du Marché". The "Batte" market is where most locals visit on Sundays. This outdoor market stretches along the Meuse River and also attracts many visitors to Liège. The market typically runs from early morning to 2 o'clock in the afternoon every weekend, all year long. During winter, the weather can be really cold or humid but December is the period of Christmas Market and Liege has a huge one which is famous for beer, peket (local alcohol) and warm wine or warm chocolate. How to reach us: http://www2.ulg.ac.be/acces/plans/b20.html LANGUAGE English will be the official language of the meeting. ORGANIZATION Organizing committee: Anne-Christine da Silva, Frédéric Boulvain Scientific committee: Michael Whalen (USA), Jindrich Hladil (CZE), Daizhao Chen (CHN), Simo Spassov (BEL) and Xavier Devleeschouwwer (BEL) Secretariat and correspondence: IGCP 580 Meeting, Liège University, pétrologie sédimentaire, B20, Boulevard du Rectorat, 15, Université de Liège, Sart Tilman, 4000 Liège, Belgium. Authors are invited to present their work orally or poster presentations. Oral and poster presentation will be selected by the conveners. Instructions for preparation and submission of abstracts are on the website. The submitted abstract will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee. MEETING DEADLINE 15 September, 2009 - Deadline for submission of abstracts, for registration, for application to grants and for payment. EVENT Social dinner in the centre of Liege in a typical restaurant, near Christmas market, is planned for the evening 2 December 2009 (30 Euros). FIELD TRIP Post-meeting field trip: Friday 4 December 2009, sedimentology and magnetic susceptibility. Devonian of Belgium, Minimum of 7 participants are needed otherwise the field trip will be cancelled. Registration fees: 50 Euros. http://www2.ulg.ac.be/geolsed/excuFr/excu_Fr.htm 2 GRANTS Grants are offered mostly to participants from less developed countries. If you want to apply for a grant (before 15 September), please send us an email ([email protected], [email protected]) with your affiliation. TRAINING A TRAINING SESSION will be proposed on Saturday 5 December. This training will present the technique of magnetic susceptibility and its application in sedimentology and paleoenvironmental studies. Training is free and you’re all welcome, but please do not forget to register before 15 September. Training Schedule (this schedule is subject to change): Saturday 5 December 9h00 - 10h30: B.B.
