VENUE
The first IGCP 580 meeting will be held at Liège University Wednesday 2 and
Thursday 3 of December 2009 (plus a fieldtrip day on the Friday 4 and training on the
Saturday 5 December).
The city of Liège is situated in the valley of the river Meuse, near Belgium's eastern
borders with the Netherlands (35km from Maastricht) and Germany (60km from
Aachen), where the Meuse meets the Ourthe river. It is in the former "sillon
industriel", the industrial backbone of Wallonia.
The city is the principal economic and cultural centre of Wallonia and is well-known
for its very crowded folk festivals (mostly in summer) and is renowned for its
significant nightlife. Within the pedestrian zone, there is an area (100 m square called
"Le Carré") with many lively pubs which are reputed to remain open until the last
customer leaves (typically around 6 am). Another active area is the "Place du
Marché".
The "Batte" market is where most locals visit on Sundays. This outdoor market
stretches along the Meuse River and also attracts many visitors to Liège. The market
typically runs from early morning to 2 o'clock in the afternoon every weekend, all year
long.
During winter, the weather can be really cold or humid but December is the period of
Christmas Market and Liege has a huge one which is famous for beer, peket (local
alcohol) and warm wine or warm chocolate.

to apply for a grant (before 15 September), please send us an email
([email protected], [email protected]) with your affiliation.
TRAINING
A TRAINING SESSION will be proposed on Saturday 5 December. This training will
present the technique of magnetic susceptibility and its application in sedimentology
and paleoenvironmental studies. Training is free and you’re all welcome, but please
do not forget to register before 15 September.
Training Schedule (this schedule is subject to change):
Saturday 5 December
9h00 - 10h30: B.B. Ellwood (Department of Geology and Geophysics, Louisiana
State University, U.S.A.): Magnetic susceptibility: instruments, units, standardization
and various approaches for using MS data sets for correlations
11h00 - 12h30: S. Spassov (Centre de Physique du Globe, IRM, Dourbes, Belgium):
The potential of mineral magnetism for studying past and present environment.
12h30 - 14h00 Lunch
14h00 - 16h30: X. Devleeschouwer (Sedimentologie et dynamique des bassins, ULB,
