They are the local businesses, non-profits and national corporations among us who share the idea that adventure can be a vehicle to inspire environmental stewardship and altruism. They put their services and finances behind this community so that we can showcase the films that bring that spirit to life. We are committed to working with non-profit and corporate partners who are active locally and globally in progressive community initiatives. We would like to say to each of you a hearty, “Thank you.” FILMS ACE AND THE DESERT DOG (9:09 min) Director: Brendan Leonard, Stefan Hunt, Forest Woodward Producer: Brendan Leonard, Forest Woodward, Joe Peters To mark his 60th birthday, Ace Kvale sets out on a 60 day backpacking trip through the canyonlands of Utah. Longtime friends come and go along the journey, but through it all is his steady companion and dog, Ghengis. The film offers an intimate view into their bond, and the landscape that inspires them both. ART OF RECOVERY Premier (20:00 min) “Causes” Director/Producer: Victor Duran, Nick Greece “Art of Recovery” Director/Producer: Jeremy Collins, Nick Greece After Nepal’s earthquake of April 2015, a small band of accidental rescue workers went into the epicenter of the disaster for 56 days. Six months later, a paraglider, artist, and photographer follow the path of the rescue team in a unique way, using their particular talents to eventually raise money and bring hope to those most affected. BEFORE IT FALLS (12:08 min) Director: Simon Bischoff Producer: Simon Bischoff, Mathew Farrell Lee Cossey makes the first ground up ascent of the Ewbank route on Tasmania’s iconic Totem Pole. BEING HERE (4:46 min) Director/Producer: Hilary Oliver A visual poem offering a reminder that venturing into the wilderness offers a unique glance into a two way mirror. Through it, we have a lens to the beauty of nature, yet can simultaneously reflect inwards to see our own bravery, vulnerability and connectivity to our world. BIGG’S CRACK Premier (6:31 min) Director: Zak Griffler Producer: Pete Takeda 600 feet in length and hidden deep in the southern Utah desert, Bigg’s Crack is an unusually continuous and uniform climb. For seven years, its first ascent has been a pursuit of Pete Takeda, that he quips as the “greatest unclimbed offwidth that no one’s heard of.” Until now. BREATHE (3:21 min) Director/ Producer: Aly Niklas Returning yet again to the climbing haven of Indian Creek, Utah, Boulder-based filmmaker and photographer, Aly Nicklas, seeks to discover the reason for the desert’s timeless allure. In this pilgrimage to that now-sacred place away from the pressures and pace of modern life, the importance of living slowly reveals itself. CHINA: A SKIER’S JOURNEY Premier (16:00 min) Directed and Produced by Jordan Manley Skiing as sport is in its infancy in China, a phenomenon of the country’s rapidly growing middle class. As a means of survival however, it is thousands of years old, born out of necessity in the Altai mountains at the intersection of China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Siberia. Chad Sayers and Forrest Coots touch down into the rich past and dizzying future of these contrasting Chinese ski cultures. As one rapidly expands, they find the other is at risk of disappearing. COTTONWOOD RETURN Premier (4 min) Director/Producer: Vance Howard On the final day of a wilderness rafting trip on the Yampa River, Colorado fine artist Sally White King prepares to return to civilization. But when a giant cottonwood tree crashes down near camp, she’s thrust into deep kinship with the dying tree and is given a rare moment to learn the possibility that both life – and death – are precious. DARKLIGHT (7:31 min) Director: Mike Brown Producer: Zac Ramras The temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest and southern Utah desert both offer worldclass mountain biking. However, Darklight pushes the creative bounds of the sport and these locales. With the aid of thousands of pounds of lighting equipment and a tireless crew, this landscape quickly evolves into something otherworldly. DOUGLAS TOMPKINS: A WILD LEGACY (15:51 min) Director: James Q Martin and Chris Cresci Producer: Alison Kelman From when the film Mountain of Storms documented his trip from California to Patagonia in 1968 until his tragic death in 2015, Douglas Tompkins was a celebrated adventurer. He also gained world-renown for his success in branding companies such as The North Face and Esprit, as well as for his work in conservation through which he and his wife, Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, protected 2.2 million acres of land. A Wild Legacy tells the story of the life, work, and adventures of this inspiring individual, and portrays the efforts of Kristine and the Tompkins Conservation team to continue his mission. ECLIPSE (31:25 min) Director: Anthony Bonello Producer: Mike Douglas, Anthony Bonello From the beginning it was an absurd idea: Travel to Svalbard, high above the Arctic Circle in the middle of winter, to try and capture a photo of a skier in front of a total solar eclipse. A cast of Salomon skiers including Cody Townsend, Chris Rubens, and Brody Leven follow photographer, Reuben Krabbe, into the frozen wilds, battling weather, climate change, and their own ambitions in a quest for a shot at a once-in-a-lifetime. ELK RIVER (28 min) Directors: Jenny Nichols & Joe Riis Producer: Arthur Middleton An echo of a thematically similar expedition in 1871, this short documentary takes an interdisciplinary look at elk migration through the eyes of scientist Arthur Middleton, artist James Prosek, and photojournalist Joe Riis. The three explorers track the movements of a herd over rangelands, snowcapped mountain passes, and through dangerous rivers on their journey to the high-alpine ecosystem of Yellowstone National Park, meeting individuals along the way whose lives are deeply intertwined with the fate of these majestic, migratory animals. EQUAL FOOTING (7:32 min) Director: Daniel Holz, Eric Elofson, Kaare Iverson Producer: Daniel Hol Wyoming’s remote and vast wilderness provides the perfect canvas for Alpinists Kim Havell and Julia Heemstra to redefine preconception of the feminine. Isolated and exposed, their presence breathes life into this bleak yet breathtaking landscape as they navigate sheer granite walls and explore the fabric of experience. FINDING THE CROSS Premier (9:27 min) Director: Drew Warkentin Student film Finding the Cross is the story of a young man who wants to ski the infamous Mount of the Holy Cross. The more he tries, the further out of reach it becomes. Part adventure, part historical documentary, he realizes that in order to be successful; he must uncover the mysterious past of the mountain. FLASHES OF THE ALTAI (5 min) Director: Joey Schusler Three childhood friends set out for the far western corner of Mongolia to combine mountain biking and packrafting in a self-supported adventure into the unknown. Never having attempted a mountain bike to packraft link-up, they decided it was a great idea to travel to one of the most remote and sparsely populated places in the world to try it out. FLEDGLINGS (26:10 min) Director : Cedar Wright New hobbies that quickly become obsessions are not uncommon for residents of Boulder. Fledglings follows professional climbers Cedar Wright and Matt Segal and their foray into the sport of paragliding. Tree landings, sketchy winds, and junkshow launches become part of their new vernacular. After just six months, Wright and Segal embark on an ambitious mission: to climb and fly off of 18,491 foot peak, Orizaba. HAYWIRE (14:29 min) Director: Cheyne Lempe Dave Allfrey and Cheyne Lempe experience the wild beauty of Baffin Island, and this is their story about a dream that goes haywire. A terrifying mishap results in the contemplation of life and the cost of adventure. HOW TO CATCH A TIGER (10:04 min) Director: Brant Backlund, Miguel Booth With time running out, two filmmakers scramble to learn how to use an ultra high-speed camera and get to Far East Russia in time to catch a rare Siberian tiger the moment it’s released back to the wild. KID WARRIOR (6:31 min) Director: Vanessa Black Producer: BLKFLM + Anchorlight Production The planet doesn’t need saving. We do. Xiuhtezcatl Roske-Martinez is not your average 14 year old. He is mobilizing teens in over 50 countries to demand greener policy from world leaders. MARTIN’S BOAT (24:02 min) Director: Pete McBride In the 1950’s, Martin Litton prevented two dams from being built in the Grand Canyon and went on to pioneer whitewater dories, a project he believed would facilitate the widespread appreciation of this world wonder and further conservation awareness. Sixty years later, this film pairs breathtaking visuals and documentary-style narration to pay tribute to Litton’s vision as it follows a dory’s maiden voyage down the rapids of the Colorado River through the monumental landmark itself. POUMAKA (15:00 min) Director: Andy Mann, Keith Ladzinski Producer: Mike Libecki, Andy Mann, Keith Ladzinski Jungle mayhem ahead: Angie Payne, a bouldering champion, joins climber Mike Libecki on an adventure that leaves the rest of the world behind. They aspire to make the first ascent on the daunting south face of Poumaka Tower in French Polynesia, but they learn that the moments that build you up sometimes break you down first. REMEMBER WHEN? (3 min) Directors: Jenny Nichols, Hayden Peters, Andy Maser Producers: James Sano, World Wildlife Fund Ted Martens, Natural Habitat Adventures To resuscitate the environmental conversation, this film encourages us to revisit the heart of our childhood. In reactivating our imaginations, we remember the wonder of nature and why it’s worth protecting. RETURN TO ZANSKAR (23:11 min) Director/Producer: Bryan Liptzin and Daniel Bull 30 years after their first visit, two American college friends return to an ancient Buddhist monastery high in the Himalayas to reconnect with their past, and witness a culture being thrust into the modern world as the first ever road to the monastery nears completion. SCENES FROM THE GREEN Premier (5:34 min) Director: Celin Serbo In May 2016, a desire to blaze new trails in their sport sent four climbers on a journey through the unmarked miles of Utah’s Green River. What they gained from it went far beyond their ambitions, and this gritty film captures all the action. SPEED CLIMBING THE NAKED EDGE (7:04 min) Director: Sparkshop Scott Bennett and Brad Gobright share their tactics as they chase the speed record on the Eldorado Canyon classic, The Naked Edge. THE ACCORD (20:00 min) Director: RC Cone A poetic film about an Icelandic surfer, the challenges he faces at the hands of the personified, heavily-bearded North Atlantic wind, and his conviction that if you listen carefully, an understanding can be reached between nature and the pursuit of your passion. THE END OF SNOW (20:42 min) Director: Morgan Heim Producer: Day’s Edge Productions Premier What will the world be once winter has changed forever? Coloradan and tropical ecologist, Dr. Jane Zelikova, embarks on an adventure to uncover the consequences of industry. Traversing mountains to meet with visionaries and friends, she searches for the story of snow, hoping that in discovering its past and present, we can draw a map of our future--even beyond its existence. THE LIVING FOREST (9 min) Director: Marc Silver Producer: Caroline Bennett In the Sarayaku region of the Ecuadorian Amazon, a Kichwa tribe fights to protect its land from exploitation and destruction. A canoe is built to represent Sarayaku culture at the COP21 climate conference in Paris and to share with the world an age-old knowledge of our interconnectivity with each other and with nature. THE LAST RIDE (5:39 min) Director: Ryan Van Duzer A thirteen-year love affair comes to a moving end when Ryan Van Duzer’s bicycle of thirteen years turns its pedals over for the last time. Its rider reflects on their time together from his Peace Corps service to a trans-American journey, describing what he learned about life, freedom, and the heart and soul he breathed into his beloved machine. THE MYSTERIES {8:00 min} Director: Skip Armstrong In 2010 adventure photographer Krystle Wright dreamed of an image that would stay with her for years to come. In a highly personal project lasting four and a half years, she pursued this elusive image in her art, and faced many challenges along the way. THE TRAIL TO KAZBEGI (15:30 min) Director: Joey Schusler Four adventurers head into the highest portions of the Georgian Caucasus--one of earth’s wildest mountain ranges--with nothing but their bicycles and enough supplies for ten days. On what becomes a half-year-long journey, they face vicious elemental obstacles, but the tradeoff is a glimpse of unparalleled local hospitality and some of the most magnificent views they have ever encountered. The Jonny Copp Foundation was founded to inspire people through powerful imagery and stories born of adventure and the authentic human experience. We are a non-profit organization supporting the development and exchange of creative ideas by offering grants, outreach programs, exhibits, and a forum that stimulates individual creativity, intellectual promise, respect for our environment, and the spirit of adventure. The catalyst for creating the Jonny Copp Foundation was the tragic loss of three extraordinary individuals, Jonny Copp, Micah Dash, and Wade Johnson. They lost their lives in an avalanche on an expedition in Tibet in 2009. The spontaneous outpouring from the around the globe created a mandate for sharing and continuing their work. The Foundation will strive to keep their memory and dreams alive and they remind us that our lives are precious and brief and that each of us has the power to realize our dreams and make a positive contribution to the world. jonnycoppfoundation.org COMMUNITY ADVENTURE FILM STAFF Jonny Copp - Founder and Spirit Advisor Aimee Copp - Executive Director Michael Vladeck - Board of Directors President Jose Yavari - Creative Director / Film Selection Director Abbey Smith - Public Relation / Media Director / Producer Tres Altman - Senior Producer Jordan Grano - Architect Extraordinaire Renae Foxhoven - Street Fair Director Barry Thompson & Half Wild - Motion Graphics Alex King - Audio Video Production Mick Follari - Web Development Jeremy Collins - Contributing Artist Extraordinaire Tim and Robyn Smith - Volunteer Coordinators Ryan Van Duzer - Emcee Nasa Koski - Adventure Film School Director Dave Reipe - Technical Director Anne Banister - Technical Producer Alex Rojas-Sanders - Technical Production Manager / Videography SPECIAL THANKS TO The Copp Family, Pemba Sherpa, Joe Prebich, Crystal Hasselton, Megan Mcgough, Jennifer Bertram, Leigh Barnes, Joni Taisey, Michael Sadowski, Mario Molina, Caroline Bennett, Talya Tavor, Brian Scaglia, Terra Beaton, Jonathan Thesenga, Adam Peters, Joe Osbourne, Olivia Hsu, Jonathan Lantz, Jonathan Degenhardt, Peggy Haddon, Ruby & Gareth Richards, Brian Scaglia, Eric Rosenblum, Donnie Mortimer, Asa Firestone, Kris Klauber, Jonathan Thesenga, Josh Laguna, Joe Osborne, Davidson Lewis, Annie Sweeney, Denny Finn, Jenny Bear, Jason Antin, Mike Lewis, Maya Ward-Karet , Kestral Hanson, Guy Ilan, Paul Kimbris, Janet Gunther, Ryan McCauley.
