The Lexus advanced airbag system is a sophisticated network of sensors and airbags
designed to enhance passenger protection .
Depending on factors such as crash severity
and seat track position , the driver's multistage
airbag deploys at one of three speeds to help
provide an appropriate level of occupant
restraint. Similarly, the front passenger dualstage airbag uses weight and crash severity
sensors to determine its deployment. The 2004
RX330 also features a new front seat-mounted
airbag that is larger than the conventional side
airbag, to help protect the torso , abdomen and
pelvis . And rounding out this comprehensive
system are front and rear side airbags and a
new driver's-knee airbag . Of course , as
impressive as it is, the advanced airbag system
is one feature we hope is never needed .

On behalf of the people of the State of Hawai' i, I send greetings of warm aloha to the
organizers, artists and everyone else involved in 26 th annual Art Maui show.
Art Maui showcases some of the island's finest locally created works of art. I am
delighted that Maui continues to be a leader in the arts, and that so many talented local artists
find creative inspiration from the culture and people of the "magic" island of Maui.
I extend my best wishes for a successful show, and look forward to this event for many

Maui Arts & Cultural Center
Welcomes Art Maui back to the Schaefer International Gallery
and celebrates the exhibit's 26th anniversary.
NE OF THE FINEST GALLERIES IN THE STATE OF
O Hawai'i, the Schaefer International Gallery
is the only museum-quality exhibition space on the
island of Maui. The 4,000 square foot space features
flexible exhibit lighting, free-standing and mobile
wall panel systems, climate control, and hardwood
floors. Elegant and functional, it is perfect for an
n the late 1970's a group of professional artists here
I on Maui decided to start a juried art show. Miriam
Fender, a woman with a vision, plus great connections
in Maui County Government, wanted to put together
a one-time art show to encourage visitor interest in art
collection on Maui. Miriam contacted Janet Allan,
then manager of the Lahaina Art Society, and Janet
pulled in the energy of artists Marian Freeman and
Richard Nelson.
The idea met a very positive response from Maui
artists. They willingly sought a juried show to stretch
towards a more professional leve l in their work.
A number of ideas have been implemented to
encourage the collecting of art. The commitment of
the State Foundation on Cu lture and the Arts to purchase from the show made a strong statement to promote local art ists. T he idea of the Purchase Pledge
program became essential to the perpetuation of Art

exhibition or reception. Since opening in May, 1994
it has been the sight of many memorable exhibits
which have included partnerships and collaborations
with local artists, crafts people and community groups
such as Art Maui. The Maui Arts & Cultural Center's
mission is to "be a gathering place where our
community celebrates creativity." The Center was
open 364 days last year, as the site of 1700 events!
World-class artists in music, dance and theater
performed here. Children's educational activities,
corporate & community meetings, movement classes
and film screenings took place here, as well as festivals
and exhibits. All this and more brings 22 7 ,000 people
annually to Maui's 'gathering place'-the most
comprehensive arts facility in Hawai'i. Art Maui has
grown to become one of the State's most prestigious
juried art shows and The Center is honored to host a
community exhibit of such high esteem. To the
hundreds of artists, donors and volunteers who have
made Art Maui 2004 possible, mahalo nui loa.
Maui. A small group of local collectors would promise each year
to purchase art from the show.
This led to twelve sales at the
first show including acquisitions
by the State Foundation. In 2003
forty five pieces sold. Six were
purchased
by
the
State
Foundation, twenty five by the
Purchase Pledgers and fourteen
to members of the public during
the show. Art Maui has tru ly become the source for
the finest art in the county.
As Maui grows and changes, so does Art Maui. Last
year over 401 artists entered the show, with 656 pieces.
Of those, 99 were selected from 89 artists. Art Maui
has a solid base of tradit ion yet keeps and eye on the
future .

retired from the Academy 21 years later on February 1,
2003. Ellis received his MFA from the University of
Chicago in 1962 and his Ph.D. at the University of
California Los Angeles.
While at UCLA one of the positions held by Ellis
was Curator of African, Oceanic, and Indonesian Art.
As a curator, Ellis authored numerous catalogues,
book and exhibition reviews and articles dealing with
non-western cultures. He also curated numerous exhibitions on non-western and folk arts involving cultures in Africa, Oceania, the Americas, Asia and
Southeast Asia. He conducted field research in
Northern Luzon, Philippines on the art of the Ifugao
with archival research in Manila.
Ellis served as the consulting editor to "African
Arts" magazine and as a board member for the Los
Angeles Ethnic Arts Council and the UCLA
Associates for Ethnic Art. He was also awarded the
Ralph C. Altman Memorial Award and outstanding
Service Award and became a Kress Foundation Fellow.

Under Ellis's tenure at the Academy he attracted
and found funding for major international blockbuster
exhibitions such as the recent "Mystery of the Nile:
Treasures from Ancient Egypt" and "Tomb Treasures
from China" which attracted tens of thousands to the
AcaJemy. "Encounters With ParaJise: Views of
Hawaii and Its People 0778-1941}" was so popular
and well received, it spurned an ongoing series of temporary exhibitions leading up to the opening of the
new John Dominis and Patches Damon Holt Gallery
for the Arts of Hawaii in the Luce Pavilion Complex.
This new permanent display is the only one of its kind
showcasing the history of art in Hawaii.
In 1996 Ellis was named Hawaii Salesman of the
Year in recognition of his support for, and promotion
of, Hawaii's cultural attractions. He is the 2002 recipient of the Alfred Preis Award from the Hawaii
Alliance for Arts Education recognizing his lifetime
commitment to arts and arts education for Hawaii's
children and their families. Upon Ellis's retirement the
Honolulu Academy Board of Trustees unanimously
voted to name a new gallery after him to honor his 21
years of service to the Academy. "The George and
Nancy Ellis Gallery: Art of the Philippines" opened in
September 2003.

"I
MAUl
was born into
a rare pnVllege." This
statement usually means wealth.
But the fortune
for Paulo was
that he was born in to an artist family. Born on
Honolulu in 1970, Paulo states "I am the son of two
artists, my father, is renowned Maui/Molokai artist Phil
Sabado and my mother Christine, is a writer." When
Paulo's father, realized his first born would be an artist
as well, he began his son's training at age three.
"When my father understood I wanted to draw, he
placed a large medical anatomy book under my bed,
with clear instructions; learn the human body first!
Before I began drawing in earnest I was required to
learn to draw all the bones and muscles. Only then
would I understand what lay beneath the skin that creates the human form. When I thought I had done a
good drawing, he would smile like some Zen master
and tell me 'Now draw this upside down!' This book
remained under my bed and in my room for years and
years to study and draw what I saw!"
As the first high school recipient of an art scholarship from the Lahaina Art Society in 1988, Sabado
attended University of Hawai'i in the Fine Art BFA
program.
"I worked professionally in commercial art thereafter, trading in my pencil and brushes for a Power
Macintosh (HAL) to serve business men with MBAs.
My father continues to be my best teacher. Those at
UH were good, but my father's strong discipline, critique and encouragement far exceeds everyone else. I
will think I have finished a painting and sh ow it to my
father and he will very diplomatically ask, 'Don't be
afraid to hit the paint, paint brighter, and don't scrub

ARTIST
at the canvas!' Always trying to make me see differently, not to believe everything I see, 'Stop using the computer, use your imagination!'. My painting, YELLOW
HOUSE, represents this ideal through my surreal
vision. The unique color palette displays an unusual
depiction of a hotel near the Alawai canal where I once
lived with my two children. I painted this at a difficult
time in my life, when I was going through one of life's
transitions. This piece was selected for Art Maui 2002
and was purchased by a hotel in Waikiki. Another
inspiration has been teaching art to aspiring youth at
the 'Harbor Lights' complex in Kahului through an outreach program. The children continue to encourage my
personal growth . Seeing how pure and effortless they
approach art. Their willingness to please anyone who
takes the time to appreciate their art is my reward.
"My dad always taught me in the Molokai way, 'Boy,
you always gotta give back.' Teaching kids is my way.
Building these individual relationships with trust and
understanding is the most important aspect to my
teaching. I am the "Art Guy" everywhere I go when I
see them in the community. ROCKETT, this year's art
Maui poster selection, is a strong work with deep cadmium orange and burnt umber tones. I feel this work
can be defined as my vision of what I see from the road
side, where the Pu'unene smokestack towers above the
fields. Dreamlike and bold, the ebony wires stretched
onto the canvas in oil. This piece is about my Father's
family coming to the Hawaiian Islands to work in the
sugar cane industry in the 1930's. My insp irations are
my Mother and Father, film directors Stanley Kubrick,
Akira Kurosawa, David Lynch, and Martin Scorsese.
Science fiction Writers Philip K. Dick and Frank
Herbert. I love Philip G lass and all other Minimalist
composers. Painters, Masami Taraoka, Salvador Dali,
Max Beckman. These artists are my guides into this
world of art."

state Fo Uvnaation on CUvttUvre § the Arts
B
Ch year, the State Foundation on Culture
and the Arts (SFCA) organizes an
Acquisition Award Selection Committee
(AASC) to visit Art Maui prior to the opening of the
show. The committee is responsible for selecting and
recommending to the SFCA board outstanding works
of art that should be acquired for the Art in Public
Places Relocatable Collection. The AASC is comprised of SFCA's board and staff and volunteer consultants who are qualified visual art professionals. In
1989, the Art in State Buildings Law was succeeded by
the Work of Art Special Fund.
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts was
established by the Hawaii State Legislature in 1965 as
the official arts agency of the State of Hawaii. In 1967,
the State's role as patron of the arts was further augmented by Act 298, the "Art-in-State-Buildings Law."
This legislation mandated that one percent of appropriations for the original construction of any State
building be set aside for the acquisition of works of art.
Also, the funds are used for the conservation, transportation and exhibition of works of art.
The Art in Public Places Program of the State
Foundation expends these funds for the purchases of
completed, portable works of art, and for the commissioning of artists for works of art to be placed at specific locations.
Works of art acquired for the State's public art collection are displayed in state offices and buildings
throughout Hawaii. These works of art are se lected for
purchase from juried exhibitions, galleries and artists'
studios by Acquisition Award Selection Committees
made up of State Foundation board members, staff and
qualified visual arts consultants. Commissions which
are major works installed as an integral part of a structure or near a building, are awarded by the SFCA
board from a list of three artists selected by Art
Advisory Committees composed of the building's officials, architects, clientele and residents of the nearby
community. The objectives of the Arts in Public Places
Program are:
e To enhance the environmental quality of public
buildings and spaces throughout the State for the
enjoyment and enrichment of the public;
e To cultivate the public's awareness, understanding,
and appreciation of visual arts in all media, styles
and techniques;
e To contribute to the development and recognition
of a professional artistic community;
e To acquire, interpret, preserve, and display works of
art expressive of the Hawaiian Islands, the multicultural heritages of its people, and the various creative interests of its artists.
"Th{.s tfj {.station mandated that one percent of appropriations
for the orfjinat constr~ction of an:; state h~UdiYlj he set aside
for the acz~{.sition of works of art."
