SPEAKER
Elaine Blasi, the Head of School of
the Maui Global Technical High
School, located in Wailuku, was the
guest speaker. This a Montessori
philosophy high school. There
are a total of 40 similar schools;
the one in Wailuku is the first in
Hawaii. Teachers are trained at
one of 4 centers in the US.
The Montessori system puts the
child first. Students are encouraged to collaborate in groups and
to master a subject before moving on to the next.
The Wailuku school provides “a
21st century classroom for the
21st century workplace” and prepares students for college and has
180 school days a year. With each
teacher spending a maximum of
15 minutes in each class. The students are taught to communicate,
learn world languages and exceed
the standards set by traditional
schools.
The school uses existing facilities
such as 808 Fitness for their gym
classes, Wells Street park for
fields and MAPA for the arts. This
allows the school to be sustainable and take up less room. The
fee of $11,000 a year is one of the
least expensive private high
schools on Maui.
Elaine is 1 of 8 people who go
around the country to check on
the accreditation of schools. She
has been involved with the Montessori schools on Maui for many
years. Her previous position was as
the head of Montessori Hale O
Keiki, in Kihei.
