Black and white - hard to go past in the style stakes
Black and white - hard to go past in the style stakes, particularly when combined with panache and confidence. Check out the black crystal chandelier ... Moving in with nothing but a chandelier, Tanya and her family were literally starting from scratch. And while she was captivated by the challenge of decorating and furnishing the whole house, she was particularly excited by the prospect of creating her own private space at the rear of the house. This area consisted of a generously proportioned bedroom with adjoining bathroom, a sitting room and deck. It’s here that Melinda has cut loose with a riot of pattern and very little colour – just your basic black and white, in an amazing array of chevrons, stripes, Greek key and solid black – and it looks sensational. Accessorised with a bone inlay chest and a black crystal chandelier, Melinda sourced vintage pieces to mix in with carefully selected accessories that made for bold statements. This area is big people’s territory ... sophisticated and positively zinging with style, it’s one of Tanya’s favourite spots – along with the deck overlooking the pool outside. The bedroom also features black and white, but here Melinda has opted for more solid blocks of colour in the black bedcover and contrasting white bedhead, and in the black silk curtains – and then broken the rules with the zebra patterned footstool at the end of the bed.Touches of gold in the photo frame, in the inside of the light and in the bedside tables brings a glamour to this room which is, says Melinda “heading towards Hollywood Regency without being a slave to that particular look.” Downstairs is the library and childrens’ living room (see page 146 and 147) as well as the kitchen, dining room and very grown up sitting room. The dining room retained its original wallpaper and light fittings, but Melinda added a magnificent timber dining table imported from the 131 QH_130to133_Lily.g ADV.indd 2 23/04/13 10:28 AM “I stand in the kitchen, and I can see the living room, dining room and kids’ sitting room - and I love it all” says Tanya USA, and teamed it with custom made chairs in silver pearl linen. The room’s biggest talking point is the wall of butterflies, so carefully framed they showcase the most brilliant colours. Likened to the classic Hollywood Regency style, Tanya’s home was fashioned to be a glamorous sanctuary away from the business of life, where she could relax and entertain. The sitting room revels in a fireplace that was designed and commissioned by Melinda and which yields a cosy glow when lighted. Melinda says, “The space is about enjoying people and spending time together. I wanted to reflect back on those days when the house was centred on entertaining and enjoying each other rather than the TV”. The quietly elegant hand made rug works perfectly with the furniture in the room, all of which comes from Lily G’s latest range. Floor to ceiling windows either side of the fireplace allow plenty of light into this charming room. As always, it’s the client’s reaction to the home which determines the success or failure of an interior designer’s work – and the depth of understanding between Melinda and Tanya is testament to the undoubted success of this project . 132 QH_130to133_Lily.g ADV.indd 3 23/04/13 10:28 AM LILY.G | PROJECT LILY G Shop 5/9 Longland St Newstead Q 4005 p: 07 3257 3550 e: [email protected] w: lilyg.com.au 133 QH_130to133_Lily.g ADV.indd 4 23/04/13 10:28 AM INTERIOR DESIGN Lily G Fresh, fresh, fresh » THE P ROJECT: To 146 create a kid friendly, no fuss children’s room.
