Tool List for Mortise and Tenon Bench Workshop
These are the required and optional tools that you’ll need to successfully participate in the mortise and
tenon bench class. You can purchase these tools in person in the greater Los Angeles area or online.
Consider visiting the Rockler closest to you or Eagle Tools on San Fernando Road in east Los Angeles.
Austin Hardwoods & Hardware is a great woodworking store in Santa Ana. Lee Valley Tools, Japan
Woodworker and Woodcraft are options for an extensive online tool selection.

Required:
● Pencils and eraser
● Measuring tool: a tape measure or ruler will work.
● Bench chisels: 3/8” and 3/4” (though you might consider purchasing a whole set of chisels).
Chisels range in price and quality. Irwin makes good entry level Marpels chisels, but you can
spend more on brands like Veritas (PM-V11), Lie-Nielsen, Ashley Isles and many others.
● Mallet: Shop Fox makes a nice, inexpensive brass mallet.
● Sharpening stones: EITHER Norton 1000 grit and 4000/8000 grit water stones, combination grit
60/600 oil stone or multiple grit diamond stones.
● Tenon saw: Like chisels, crosscut saws range in price and quality. Some options include Lee
Valley, Gramercy, and the expensive Lie-Nielsen.
● Block plane: Stanley makes a good affordable one, but again you can spend more on other
brands.
● Marking gauge: There are a variety of Japanese and Western-style marking gauges that range in
price. Japan Woodworker has a good range of them on its website. You can feel free to purchase
either a single-bladed marking gauge or a two-bladed mortise gauge.
Optional:
● Complete set of bench chisels (including 1/8”, 1/4”, 1/2”, 1”)
● Combination square: Starrett makes an excellent square in both 6” and 12”, but there are less
expensive options available.
● Safety glasses and ear protection (will be provided but feel free to purchase your own pair)
● Shoulder plane: Clifton 3110 (3-in-1), Stanley #92, Lie-Nielson, Veritas, etc...
● Smoothing plane: Stanley #4 is the best entry level plane, but you can go more expensive with
many of the other brands mentioned elsewhere on this list, in particular Lie Nielsen.
