DIRECTOR’S NOTES
“ The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” –
Edmund Burke
(I like to think that this applies to all humanity, of course.)
I spent much of the summer researching this play, specifically the history of what
actually happened during the Salem witch trials. I even had a chance to go to Salem
and the surrounding areas and see the Nurse Farm, and the family plot where Rebecca
Nurse is buried. To see the land, and the sea, and the rugged coast line, and think how
intimidating it must have been to farm the sharp, rocky landscape, and how a plot of
level and relatively cleared land would be a valuable thing clarified some of the politics
of the play. But what happened in the trials themselves has been grim research. One
example: a four year old girl named Dorcus Good was accused of witchcraft and thrown
in jail with her mother, Sarah Good. Sarah Good gave birth to a child while imprisoned,
but the baby died before her mother was hanged for witchcraft. Only after the frenzy
subsided was little girl eventually released. Not surprisingly, Dorcus Good was never
“right” after that, according to her father, and could never be left alone. And that’s just
one miserable, true story of this terrible event.
Miller took a few dramatic liberties with the history of these events, but not that many.
The real Abigail Williams probably didn’t know Proctor’s. She was 11 and he was in his
60’s, and she did not work for him or live anywhere near him. But Giles Corey, Rebecca
Nurse, John Hale, Rev. Parris, Mary Warren, Judge Danforth, Hathorne, the Putnams
and many others in the play were real people who made these choices and suffered these
fates. The madness only ended when the girls started to accuse the wives of the judges
of being witches, which quickly called their legitimacy into question. This, only after 19
people had been hung and 200 people accused of witchcraft. A few escaped, a few never
went to trial, but many went to prison. Over 13 people accused of witchcraft died while
in prison. To be jailed in this period was gruesome—chained, freezing, and billed for
the meager food, water and lodging received; even when officially released, some could
not pay their jail fees and were forced to stay in jail, only to rack up larger fees.
The people of this play live in a theocracy, more or less, where separation of church
and state had not yet been considered, let alone practiced, in their culture. It’s easy
to dismiss them as crazy, backwards overly religious nut jobs—but that wholly and
completely misses the point of the play. The people of this play are US. Our culture
has deep roots in the puritanical tradition these individuals brought to this land. They
were immigrants, seeking opportunity and freedom to practice their religion— (though
they might have had in mind the freedom to live in a Theocracy, or to be staunchly
Calvinistic, or maybe even Quaker if you live somewhere else far away.) Their strong
belief in courts and justice is still part of our culture’s expectation, despite many clear
examples that they often failed to practice justice or mercy.
What brought on such madness, and could it happen again? Sadly, we know the answer.
Fear always brings on such ruthlessness and yes, it can, has, and continues to happened
again, in different guises.

Edgewood College Theatre
Miller famously wrote this play at the time of the McCarthy communist “witch hunts”
where Americans accused of communistic tendencies were brought to trial to stand
before the House Un-American Activities Committee. While that particular persecution
might have subsided, others have risen to take their place. Not all of them are tried in
a formal court—quite a few are tried in public opinion, or in a split second reaction
to a “criminal” black youth wearing a hoodie in a white neighborhood, or a “terrorist”
wearing any Muslim garb whatsoever.
Okay. Fine. This play is set during the witch trails. And we all know that witch hunts
of various sorts still persist. What the play asks the audience to consider: what would
you do in the face of a community on the wrong path, when you know you are far from
perfect yourself?
The Proctors are just normal, hardworking people of the time—trying to farm the land
and live their lives. How do normal, everyday people get swept into this hysteria of the
Salem? Through error, or hubris, perhaps sin: so very human—so very familiar. Who
hasn’t screwed up, and who hasn’t suffered for such errors? But when the stakes are
high as they are for Proctor, who has the courage to actually stand up for what she or he
believes?
I know these people. I respect them. I grew up in a Calvinistic church, and many the
doctrines of the puritans are imprinted on me. I do not see them as foolish. But their
fears grew out of proportion—and based on what? I can say this: Miller says in his play
that the line “The Devil is Precise” never gets a laugh because really, our culture still
understands something about evil. The historical records suggest something was truly
wrong with Betty Parris. Was it witchcraft or some dark force? Perhaps. Something
medical? Maybe. But the response to the issue was out of proportion to the problem,
and created opportunity for greed and envy to take hold and hysteria to conquer clear
thinking.
When fear grips a community and rational thinking is replaced by a hysteria, greed and
fear, what do we do? Something. We must do something. Sign the petitions. Respectfully
voice the other side of the argument. Stand up to injustice, even in a very small way. Tip
the scale with SOMETHING. Perhaps start by simply thinking on these things as you
watch the play.
