September SCORE - Anne Arundel Fish and Game Association
SEPTEMBER 2016 Anne Arundel Fish & Game Conservation Association “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” - Thomas Jefferson From the President 2016 Ernie Clarke Club Championship Fellow AA&FGers, I wish to announce that AAF&G has a vacancy for the position of Treasurer in 2017. Jason Krywicki will not be seeking reelection due to increased family obligations. We are seeking an interested individual to run for the Treasurer position. AAF&G will train this individual as needed. All we ask for is a motivated person willing to volunteer a small portion of his or her time to the club. I want to thank Jason on behalf of all our members for the amazing job he has done to get our fiscal house in order. His presence at the AAF&G leadership level will be sorely missed. AAF&G is a volunteer organization. I want to touch upon the theme of volunteering this month. Can you help YOUR club? Rather, I should ask HOW will you help your club? Be it running for Treasurer or showing up for a work party or to help with match organization/operations, such the upcoming Club Championship. Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated. To get involved just reach out to any club organizer (match director, RSO etc) or club leadership (Officer, Board Member, etc.) Again, anything you can do would be a great benefit to the AAF&G community. Speaking of the club Championship: SAVE THIS DATE, Sunday OCTOBER 9, 2016. This is the date of the Ernie Clarke Club President, continued on Page 2. www.aafg.org Are You the Best? T he 2016 AAF&G Club Championship, the Ernie Clarke Memorial Shoot, will take place on Sunday, October 9th, the same day as the annual club Bull Roast. This year the stakes are even higher—the Championship prize will be free AAF&G membership dues for 2017! Test your skills against a multitude of stages showcasing the wide variety of shooting sports the Club has to offer. Any Life, Full, Family, or Photo Provisional club member is welcomeStock to participate. Guests and those who prefer not to compete can also try their hands at individual stages just for fun. We look forward to seeing you at the Bull Roast, and on the range. Come celebrate the Ernie Clarke Memorial Shoot with us and compete to become this year’s Club Champion! Please check the October SCORE for final match details. Besides shooting regular trap, we will cookout some lunch, have some fun with some shotgun games, and hopefully just have a good time. For volunteers who have signed up on the new schedule, shooting will be half-priced. Family and general members are welcome to come and enjoy a day at the trap field. Steve Newcomer has joined the ranks of shooters who have fired a perfect round - 25 straight. His next task will be to go for 50. We would like to thank John Chew for donating a lawn mower to keep the area around the stations trimmed and John Hepler for running our successful raffle. Winners have been drawn and they are making their choices. Trap is open Fridays and Saturdays 10 - 1. If you've ever had an interest in Trap come on up and join us, we have the people to help you get started. Please remember, if you bring your own shells, #8 lead shot only. Bob Yurwitz President, from Page 1. S Rimfire Action Championship. For those of you who were not there last year I can honestly say it was one of the most fun matches I have ever been a part of…and I have shot many matches all over the country. You need not be an avid competitor to take part and no equipment is required (just bring your eyes and ears). Complete the entire match for score or just complete one or two stages just for fun with no score. This event is all about having fun. This is a great opportunity to try out a new shooting discipline as well! If you have any questions about this match, please contact me via email. Hope to see you on the range this month. orry for missing the Rimfire Challenge updates the last few months, but we kept hoping to report that Keith Richardson had finally been knocked out of first place. Fortunately for Keith, that has not been the case, but there are rumors he will be on vacation for the August match. Eric Serfass (2nd in May & June) and Jim Ray (2nd in July), plus everyone else, are looking forward to a better shot at first. Attendance for the June 25th match was 17, with 9 members and 8 non-members. The July match had 18 shooters with 10 members and 10 non-members. We are always looking for experienced and inexperienced shooters on the fourth Sunday of any month. Please contact the AAF&G Training team at: [email protected]. We want to hear from you! Cowboy Action P art 2 of our Annual Hawaiian Cowboy match went off without a hitch. A little on the hot side, so we complained a lot, but had a great time with some good stages by Mouse Gun Bob. Good to see Delaware Coop come over from the shore and his friend Doc in the Box, who seemed to fit right in with us crazies. First place went to Wichita Wayne, then Durango Dude and Casey Green. 2-Step had one miss-step and ended up 4th. Delaware Coop had the only clean match. Our next match will be a regular shoot on September 17th. Hope to see you there. Millcreek Mona and Riverboat Bob PS: Remember, speak your mind but ride a fast horse. They will be conducted at the Eccles 100 Yard Range on Friday, September 9th and Friday, October 7th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm both days. The DNR requirements for obtaining a Shooter Qualification Card are as follows: • Shotgun: 3 out of 5 shots in a 9-inch circle at 40 yards • Muzzleloader: 2 out of 3 shots in a 9-inch circle at 40 yards • Bow: 3 out of 5 in vitals of a 3D deer and unmarked distances under 30 yards. • Bow qualifications will be conducted on noted firearms qualification days but on the AAF&G Archery Range No more than three shooting lanes (usually numbers 1, 2, & 3) will be used for these qualification sessions. Members wishing to shoot casually will be accommodated whenever possible and will have the remaining shooting lanes for casual use. Shoot Straight and Shoot Safely! Bill Palk Eccles Range Committee Chair www.aafg.org Eccles HP Rifle Service Rifle Matches: The next Service Rifle/MSR/Any Rifle subject to the FSA of 2013 (except M1A) Match will be held on Saturday, September 3rd from 10:00am to 12:00 noon and for those able to do so, on Friday, September 2nd from 2pm-4pm. This dual date match is due to the popularity of the Service Rifle League Matches held on the first Saturday of each month. An email will go out to High Power Shooters the week of the match to remind of the Friday opportunity. Shooters are encouraged to reserve a relay prior to the match by replying to the email. As always new shooters are encouraged to arrive early to become familiar with the course of fire for the match and instruction. Vintage Military Rifle Match: The next Vintage Military Rifle Match will be held on September 17th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon and will be for Manual Bolt Action Rifles. Very Vintage Rifle Match: Remember that the next Very Vintage Rifle Match for Single Shot Black Powder Cartridge Rifles is scheduled for the 5th Saturday in October, Oct 29th,10-noon. ___________________________________________________ Range improvements: Observant rifle shooters will notice that the deteriorating and yellow jacket infested 100 yard line railroad ties to which were affixed sockets for the target frames have been removed. Rather than sink temporary target frame tubes which would themselves have had to have been removed for the mining operation and then reinstalled, we have instead opted to use sleds which can be placed at the 100 yard line and the target frames placed in them. Do not place the sleds such that you will be shooting across shooting lanes. The surveyor stakes which have been placed at the 100 yard line will show you where your shooting lane is so you can place the sleds accordingly. Six pairs of sleds are available for general use. Once we flatten the berm approach area behind the 100 yard line, we will install some landscaping timbers to (1) contain any loose soil and (2) provide a locus for affixing the stainless steel target frame tubes on the backside thereof. Note also that the 50 yard tubes now have better, clearer identification markers which are also removable for mowing operations. The 50 yard tubes will soon (cooler weather + more volunteer labor) be mounted on the backside of a relocated 35 yard ground baffle to make them more readily findable after a winter snowfall be shifted a bit to the right of current locations so they will be better aligned with the 100 yard targets. ___________________________________________________ Away Matches Five shooters from Anne Arundel County (four from AAF&G) journeyed to Camp Perry, Ohio the last week in July to compete in the Civilian Marksmanship Program National Matches held at Camp Perry since 1907. Brian Swift, John Kerrigan, Charley Beck, Bill Palk and Rob Caple competed and of them John took home a Gold medal in the M1 Carbine match, Brian took home a Silver medal in the M1 Carbine match, and Rob took home a Bronze medal each for the Springfield Rifle and John C. Garand matches. Bill and Charley got the coveted Cloth awards (T-shirts) for their efforts. Well done all! Shoot Straight and Shoot Safely Bill Palk Eccles Range Committee Chair IDPA Action Pistol A AF&G IDPA Action Pistol held their usual four matches in August. Yes, each one was in very hot weather. However, the Saturday August 20th match was the hottest that I can remember. We usually like to talk about holding matches in sub-freezing weather, the beginning of a hurricane, and shoveling snow to clear shooting lanes. However, this winter we may be standing around the Cowboy stove telling tales about that day in August. Hats off to match director Skip Miller, the safety officers, and the participants who set up, competed, and cleared the bays for the next competition. Bill Osborne www.aafg.org AAF&G Score • September 2016 • 5 PRECISION Pistol Report Range Improvements I f you haven’t been by to visit lately, now might be a good time. Thanks to the efforts of a lot of people, there have been a number of improvements to the Precision Pistol range this year. Among them are a new bullet-proof wall between us and the Action Pistol range, which increases safety and helps reduce noise. The berm behind the targets has been re-graded and sifted, recycling the recovered lead. The deteriorating berm retaining wall has been replaced, and the resident yellow jacket colonies encouraged to move elsewhere. The target turning system has been modified to no longer need stairs over the turning gear. It also has an upgraded control system that is easier to use and more capable. And the walkway out to the 50 yard line has been rebuilt and stoned to help control water and mud. The only big task left is for you to come out and enjoy it! 22 Ammo Availability Standard velocity 22 is the go-to ammo for most target pistols. The bullets and pressures are easy on the guns and the accuracy is usually superb. It is however sometimes tough to find in local stores, so most of us shop online. Even online, availability and prices are volatile, so some hunting around is usually necessary. This might be a good time to add to your stocks – before election turmoil sets in. Need 22 ammo? Try natchezss.com (CCI SV currently on sale), championshooters.com, champchoice.com, or gricegunshop.com. There are of course other good brands and sources, too. NRA Mid-Atlantic Revolver Championship This year’s Championship was hosted by AAF&G August 20th. The day was hot, and so was the wheel-gun action. The difficult Championship was made to look easy by the winner, Master level shooter Kent Le with an 870-40 with the .22 revolver and an 864-38 with the .45 revolver for a grand aggregate total of 1734-78. The second place winner was High Master Rich Kang with a 1655-48 grand aggregate. The third place winner was Expert Richard Hinzman with a 1617-42. There were a total of 17 competitors firing in the Championship. The total included six AAF&G competitors with high club shooter Mike Burke with a 1524-17. The top Distinguished Revolver Match shots were Rich Kang, David Stockman, David Jordan, and Mike McGrath. The best of the .22 CMP EIC Match were Kent Le, Rich Kang, Mike Merritt, and James Mizelle. A special thanks is offered to our match officials Mark Spaulding, Ron Sweet, Mike and Jake Merritt, Anne Orthner and Paul Wood. It’s a 19 hour drive from Central Florida. For the uninitiated, it’s the location of the National Matches for the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) and National Rifle Association. Never having attended the National Matches before I spent the drive north wondering what I was in for and, at times, why in the world I was doing this? It was mostly to see and spend time with my good friends doing something we all enjoyed. It was also a bit of a dare. If the registration building were any bigger it would block the main road into the base. I drove right past it. I called Bill and asked him where it was. His response was the first in a series of patient “You just passed it”. After registration I went looking for the place where I would get my triggers weighed. I parked my vehicle and proceeded to walk past the trailer at least twice before calling Bill again. I carried my 3 rifles to the trailer and successfully passed the weighing in procedure all the while trying my best to look like I knew what I was doing and stay close to anyone who looked like he knew less than I did. My first Match was the Carbine Match. Thursday morning, 0630, at the 100 yard firing line. Not terribly early, except to get to the firing line you had to drag your fully loaded cart over a poorly surfaced road and grass for the better part of 20 minutes. The match went well except for the 2 failures to feed and the rear sight sliding down after every 2 shots. I did, however, place all of my shots on my target. No medal, just a neat T-shirt. Next was the Springfield/Vintage Military Match on Friday morning. Squadding (not squatting) was at 0545 hours. In Ohio it is still dark at 0545. There’s nothing like getting up in the dark, driving to the Camp in the dark, unloading your gear into your cart in the dark and dragging it seemingly forever to the 200 yard firing line in the dark. Hitting your own target at 200 yards is not a given, especially when there are 150 firing points. I didn’t do that badly. www.aafg.org Reloading during rapid fire went better than I had hoped. My only problem was the sun was just above the horizon and was glaring off the front sight blade. I didn’t do that badly considering I couldn’t see the front sight until a nice fellow in the next lane offered some sight black to spray on the front sight. It immediately went on the shopping list. Anyway, Offhand went very well and I actually shot an 82. It’s amazing what you can do when you can see the front sight… No medal, just another neat T-shirt. Last was the M1 John C. Garand Match. Squadding was again at 0545 hours. This time I brought a flashlight so I could see where I was walking. This one didn’t go so well. I had my choice of 150 targets. I don’t do well with so many choices and managed to hit targets on either side of me. The rifle performed flawlessly. Again, no medal, but got another neat T-shirt. We had accommodations at a local lakeside “resort”. John and Bill shared a room and Brian Swift and I shared another. Rob Caple had the living room to himself. We all had to share 1 bathroom and a very large balcony overlooking Lake Erie. No further comment on the accommodations other than Brian Swift snores very pleasantly while still remaining in one octave. There were 4 of us from AAF&G: Bill Palk, John Kerrigan, Brian Swift, and me. Rob Caple shoots with us often at our AAF&G club matches but is not yet a member. We’re working on him. Some won Medals and some didn’t. Special thanks to John Kerrigan who patiently coached me through the matches and cheerfully answered my steady barrage of questions. I didn’t go to Camp Perry to win a medal (fortunately). I went to see and spend time with my good friends (and get neat T-shirts). It was a 19 hour drive from where I moved to. If it was 119 hours I still would have gone. I moved, but I didn’t leave.
