Quinault Beach Resort and Casino
We’re pleased to be celebrating our 50th Anniversary throughout
2010. We’ve seen a lot of change since 1960, when the first
roads were built, the first lodgings went up and the first visitors
to Ocean Shores discovered the magic of our wide open beaches.
“Where the sun almost
always shines,” “The
richest little city in the
United States,” “Venice
of the West,” “Palm
Springs of the Northwest,”
“Lake Tahoe by the Sea,”
Ocean Shores has seen its
share of exultant nickDowntown Ocean Shores, 1961
names since 1960, when
three northwest investors dreamed up the idea of
converting the 6,000-acre Minard cattle ranch into
a coastal tourism mecca.
But while the developers may have been a little carried away with catchphrases, the past fifty years have
proven them right about
the vacation and
recreation potential of the city
that defines Point
Brown peninsula–between Gray’s
Harbor’s western
shore and the
Pacific Ocean.
Ginny Simms Restaurant
Some of Ocean
Shores’ earliest investors had Hollywood connections.
The first major, man-made attraction, Ginny Simms
Restaurant and Club by the Sea—owned by actress
and big band singer, Ginny Simms, drew
a number of Tinseltown stars
for its August 1960, Grand
Opening. Chartered planes flew
Jane Powell, Hugh O’Brien, Paula
Raymond and many others to
Bowerman Field. An estimated
11,000 locals turned out at the
airport to see the celebs.
The Pat Boone Celebrity Golf Classic, played at
Ocean Shores Golf Course
also brought an array of
stars this way—from
Milton Berle, to Fred
MacMurray, Clint Eastwood and “Broadway
Joe” Namath.
In 1963, the S.S. Catala, a
1924-vintage cruise liner
was brought to Ocean Shores
to serve as a floating hotel,
restaurant and fishing base
for charter boats—a duty it
performed admirably until two
Above, Clint Eastwood, Below Joe Namath
years later, when a Pacific winter storm with winds of 70 mph caused it to list to starboard, letting sand and water pour in through its open
ports. Efforts to refloat the Catala failed. And this once
“Queen of the Union Pacific coastal fleet,” became the
most accessible shipwreck on the Washington coast,
drawing hundreds of gawkers. By the late 1980s the
rusted hulk was more a danger than an attraction
so it was cut apart for salvage, leaving the beach at

devoid of
its once
famous
attraction.

spectacular storm watching as
