WA News
Dear Westminster Academy Community,
1
What is the difference between WA
and other schools?
Simply stated, Jesus Christ and God’s Holy Truth are at the
center of all teaching and learning, as well as every
program and event.
At Westminster Academy, we saturate our students in
prayer, and we partner with their parents in the love and
grace of Jesus Christ. We position our students to grow in
their relationship with Christ, and we immerse them in
God’s Truth in all areas of their learning. We teach to the
whole child, their mind, as well as their soul, and help
each of them develop a oneness of intellect and faith. We
educate and equip our students to excel, by using their
gifts and talents for God’s glory. Our students are inspired
to be extraordinary thinkers and exceptional learners.
When our students graduate from WA, they are prepared
to impact the culture for Christ and excel in their scholarly
endeavors in college.
2
What you will find in three of our key
publications during the school year?
Each year, we publish three key documents that tell the
story of God’s love, blessings and miracles at Westminster
Academy. These documents are:
• Optime, the annual yearbook published in May,
• Celebrating God’s Work at Westminster Academy,
published in June,
• The PawPrint, published in the fall for the previous year.
In this year’s Paw Print, you will see how God uses WA to
disciple students to impact the culture for Christ. We are
truly blessed by remarkable students who care deeply about
learning and serving others. They are mentored and
motivated by highly qualified and credentialed faculty,
staff, coaches and volunteers who love Jesus and Truth. As
you read the PawPrint, you will see God’s love and grace at
work in the lives and accomplishments of His students and
His school ministry. I hope you enjoy this edition of the
PawPrint as much as I do.
3
A Special Thank You
You may have heard me say that it takes an army of
witnesses to oversee and disciple a community of believers.
At WA, we have an amazing army of devoted disciples of
Jesus Christ who walk along side the students and the
school community every day. A special thank you goes to
all of God’s prayer warriors, students, parents, grandparents,
teachers, staff members, coaches, volunteers, PTF Board and
volunteers, Booster Club Board members, alumni, donors,
friends, pastors, church leadership and School Board
members. Your unwavering devotion to Christ and your
tireless dedication to excellence is a testimony of God's love
and grace in action at Westminster Academy.
Personally, I am humbled and blessed to serve God and
you. It is an honor and a privilege to be a WA Lion.
Praise God for His people, protection, provisions and
providential blessings at Westminster Academy.
Thank you for your prayers, love and support in the
Name of Jesus Christ,
All three of these publications can be found on the
WA website at www.wacad.edu.
What you will find in all of these publications is a
reflection of God’s glory and His providential impact
on His people at WA. Each of these publications is a
celebration of who God is and what He has been doing
in the lives of our students, learning community and
school ministry.

Lower School Students In The News
devastated Haiti, the Lowenstein’s got
special permission to fly into Port-au-Prince
and bring their daughter home.
Jessica Nedry
Jessica Nedry, a fifth-grade honors student,
is using rubber bands, compassion and
creativity to create bracelets that help form
special bonds.
Hannah was seven years old when she came
to America. She did not speak English, the
orphanage was her only home, she had
never traveled, except to Port-au-Prince for
the adoption process.
The project “Friendly Bands,” is about
much more than something pretty to
wear. “They look really nice, are creative
and original, but can also help people,”
said Jessica.
Hannah says in her book, “In this book,
there are a lot of adventures. My best
adventure was when my mom and dad came
to pick me up and bring me home to a whole
new world.”
Jessica is using her talents to help raise
awareness for special causes with her
bracelets. She’s created many styles, each
with their own colors and name.
Especially close to her heart are the bands
that support U.S. military members and
their families. She designed two bands
that she calls “Honor” and “Hero.” A
percentage of sales is donated to the
charitable organization they represent,
“Our Heroes’ Journey” and “Our Fallen
Soldier.” “It feels good to know I am helping
them,” Jessica said.
The project got its start with a bracelet
Jessica named “Hope,” to honor a family
friend diagnosed with cancer. Determined
to help her, Jessica began creating bracelets
to sell. This lead to a partnership with the
National Breast Cancer
Foundation, which
receives 10 percent of
the proceeds from the
“Hope” bracelet.
Jessica started making
the bracelets after
school, and could
twist 30 tiny rubber
bands into a bracelet
in about a minute.
Then orders kept
coming, so now production and packaging
is outsourced. “She made 100 bracelets, and
she sold most of them,” said her mother,
Madeline Nedry. “I am overwhelmingly
proud. She is an amazing young lady.”
In the words of her mom, Susan, “Hannah
had little hope of a bright future, just about
three years ago. Now she is accomplishing
great and wonderful things.”
Hannah Yoldine Lowenstein
Hannah Has A Story is a beautiful book,
written and illustrated by an incredible
young lady, Hannah Yoldine Lowenstein a
WA fifth-grade ACE student.
When she arrived in Florida, she was
nervous and shy. Her parents enrolled her
in Tae Kwon Do for self esteem, and art so
she could express herself. Amazing things
happened. She became state champion in
Tae Kwon Do. The next summer, she took a
writing class, and Hannah wrote a book
about the story of her life, as well as a
showcase for her beautiful art.
Hannah’s journey with her parents began in
2004, when Jerry and Susan Lowenstein
started flying food and medicine into Haiti.
They met Hannah when she was 18 months
old and living in an orphanage. Little
Hannah crawled across the floor and sat on
Susan’s lap. Susan said, “It was love at first
sight! I also sensed God saying to me, This is
the daughter I choose for you.”
Hannah’s parents started the adoption
process for their daughter, but the “red
tape” of adoption made it almost
impossible. Suddenly, on January 19, 2010,
one week after the earthquake which
Kaid Jaret Olson-Weston
Kaid Jaret Olson-Weston does not have a
driver's license – he is only 8 years old. That
has not kept this third-grade student from
driving, as he is
now the youngest
mini-monstertruck driver in the
United States. A
student at WA
during the week—
he always has to
finish his
homework first,
then Kaid hits the road on the weekends,
performing around the country, at monstertruck events and fairs.
“I like doing donuts. I like going over the cars.
My favorite is doing the wheelies. My truck
has so much power,” says Kaid Jaret, known
as “Kid KJ” to his school-age fans and
followers, in the monster-truck scene. Last
May, Kaid was featured on the “Amazing
Kids” segment of 20/20, on the ABC
network.

Mr. Myers challenged all of our Lower School students in
chapel to, “Say yes to God.” as he gave his own testimony
illustrated by an effective object lesson about God’s blessings.
Throughout the day he led Young Writers’ Workshops in the
Media Center for 2nd through 5th graders, giving our students
great tips for writing that were anything but boring!

Bowman
Author Crystal Bowman was the chapel speaker for
the Lower School in February. She conducted writing workshops for
kindergarten, first and second grade classes in the Lower School Media
Center throughout the day.
It was easy for her to relate to the students because of her background and
love of writing that started when she wrote her first poem at age 10. In
addition to writing poetry, she has written lyrics for children’s piano
music and has contributed over 100 songs for piano lesson books. Many
early childhood picture books, such as Cracks in the Sidewalk, If Peas
Could Taste Like Candy, A Star for Jesus can be found in the homes of
Christian families.

Pinnacle Awards
Each school year, the Broward County Nonpublic School
Association recognizes three outstanding students from each
school in the county. Once again this year’s recipients, like
those in the past, represent God and WA extremely well. These
outstanding young ladies have excelled with their gifts and
talents at WA. Their scholarship, integrity, maturity and
leadership have set them apart from their peers.
High School Pinnacle Award
Winner: Christina Roldan
Christina Roldan is a remarkable young lady, who
captivates others with her intelligence and engaging
personality. At the Distinguished Young Women
competition in Orlando, judges awarded Christina the
title of “Distinguished Young Woman.” Her peers also
gave her the title of “Miss Congeniality.” Christina is
fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and is currently
studying German. She excels in all areas of study and
holds a place in the top ten percent of her graduating
class. Her integrity, maturity, and leadership skills have set
her apart as an example for Christ among her peers.
Because of the love God has placed in her for other
cultures, Christina plans to major in medicine and
international relations, and hopes to incorporate her gift
of music into her future career. Christina states that her
desire to care for the physical needs of others will help her
to care for their spiritual needs as well.
Middle School Pinnacle Award
Winner: Kitt Curtis
Westminster Academy is pleased to recognize Kitt Curtis as
the 2012 Pinnacle Award winner. Kitt excels in academics,
always striving to do her very best on every assignment.
Participating in her church’s youth group and interested in
children’s theatre, Kitt also extends her leadership abilities
to Student Council and the National Junior Honor Society
at Westminster Academy. In athletics, she has been a part of
the diving team, cheerleading squad, soccer team, and track
team. Her musical talents are evident in her excellence in
playing the cello. Kitt encourages others on a daily basis.
She is a friend to many, showing her faith in Christ in her
walk, as well as in her talk. Kitt Curtis embodies the
qualities which Westminster Academy declares in its motto,
“Devoted to Christ, Dedicated to Excellence.”
Lower School Pinnacle Award
Winner: Lexi Gonzalez
Lexi Gonzalez is an exceptional young lady who always
wears a smile and offers a word of encouragement. She is a
well-rounded student who is respected by her peers and
teachers. Lexi excels academically and participates in a
variety of extra-curricular activities. She has served on the
lower school Student Council as secretary and vicepresident. Outside of school, Lexi
participates in kickboxing,
gymnastics and soccer. Despite her
busy schedule, Lexi still finds time
to participate in her church’s youth
group and she hopes to volunteer as
a Counselor-in-Training this
summer. Lexi’s contributions, along
with her genuine willingness to
listen and help others, exemplify a
strong Christian character.

Army AUSA Conference
The AUSA Conference is a national exhibition highlighting the latest military technology. Vendors
and purchasing agents for the Army meet and conduct business at this event. WA’s Shark Attack
was the only team in the nation to attend this exhibition and conference. Two Pentagon escorts
assisted and directed the team through the many exhibits and demonstrations.
Team members were awarded medallions by Dr. Freeman, lead engineer of the Army, and were
invited to demonstrate the robot for her. Team members drove military robots and met Army
personnel who design and operate these robots. Ms. Weimer of the “Space Missile Defense
Command,” also addressed our team.

NHS students
make an impact
TV Turn-Off Week:
Recharge and Renew!
O
ver 250 students used the week of April 22–28 to find alternative activities to
watching television or movies and playing video games to get recharged. It
was a chance to detoxify the mind and challenge students to spend more time
with family and friends. It was a success! It was also great to see the many lower
school and even some middle school students’ exercise self-discipline.
NHS students are not only the academic elite,
they also strive to make an impact within the
community, through service projects during
the year. In addition to the regularly scheduled
activities, NHS members also prepare a
wonderful “McBreakfast” for residents of the
Ronald McDonald house, and participate in
National “Clean up the Beach Day,” where
they serve by picking up trash at the
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea beach. NHS students
enjoy spending time with patients at the
Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Center, where
they spend the day making crafts and
performing music to encourage the men and
women at the facility. They also host a blood
drive at WA, and encourage their peers to
donate blood. Faculty and staff are extremely
proud of these students and how they
represent the WA community.
Great job to all those who participated in the t-shirt design competition and to
Alex Berry and Connor Bachan of Miss Polhemus’ middle school class, for their
winning design. Funding was raised to help defer the costs of the t-shirts at the
first WA Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A, coordinated by Mrs. Sandy Smith '85 Hall. It
was a fun community-building night for our school families.
T-shirts used a world away
Another world away from
Westminster Academy where
TV’s, video games and
computers are foreign, a group
of 20 boys gladly received the
surplus t-shirts from the TV
Turn-0ff Week. The boys,
between ages six and 16, were
rescued from the slums of
Nairobi, Kenya. The shirts arrived in Nairobi with members of the summer
missions team from Fort Lauderdale, which included WA teachers Leah Polhemus
and Vicky McKay, along with alumni Elisa Reino ’12, Jaclyn Clark ’01 McKay,
John McKay ’98 (Pamoja Charity Director), and Andrew Holt ’00
(Pamoja Charity missionary).
Before being rescued, the boys had been were abandoned or orphaned and living
on the streets. By equipping and empowering African church leaders with
resources and tools, Pamoja Charity seeks to motivate and mobilize these leaders
to share the love of Christ with children in need, so they may experience true
rehabilitation, restoration and renewal.
The boys are now able to attend school daily and church and learn life skills at
the Covenant Street Ministries Home for Boys. During their yearly mission trip to
the area, the team takes shoes, clothing, school supplies and treats for the boys.

Sigma Gamma:
“Changing Girls for God’s Glory”
I
t all started with an idea to create a dynamic club—one that would not just be
another bullet point on a college resume. Sophomores Vanessa Burnam and
Jessica Madhukar were inspired to fundraise and create an organization that
would unite, through Christian outreach, more than 50 underclass girls. The
Club has inspirational monthly themes, highlight speakers and a Big Sister-Little
Sister orientation program. “We want the girls to go through high school without it
being a blur,” explained co-presidents Vanessa and Jessica.
Raising money for the American Cancer Society, sponsoring a child for World
Vision, and an upcoming baby shower fundraiser for One Hope, are a few of their
many service projects. The co-presidents hope to expand the club next year and
continue to proclaim their title, “Sigma Gamma,” literally, “to Serve God.”

God’s Work In Our Fine Arts Students
W
e are tremendously blessed by a Christ-honoring faculty
and staff who passionately inspire our students to excel in
the fine arts. It is a wonderful testimony of God’s forty-one
year legacy at Westminster Academy. Our award-winning
Fine Arts Department includes classes in dance, drama,
music, visual arts and yearbook. WA students receive
instruction in music, art and dance beginning in kindergarten.
This foundation, along with the dedication of teachers and
students alike, fosters students who are selected for local, state
and national ensembles and consistently receive the highest
ratings at contests. Please join us in celebrating God’s work in
the Fine Arts at Westminster Academy.
The Band
Thank you to our band for their hard work, excellent
performances, and the way in which they represent WA.
The Concert Band trip to Costa Rica was featured in the
August travel section of Teaching Music Magazine.
The Jazz Band performed at SeaWorld as a part of their
“Soundwaves” concert series. The Middle School Concert
Band attended the OrlandoFest Music Contest and
received a superior rating and Second-Place Silver Award.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Westminster Academy held its
annual Madrigal Feast on December 5 and 6, 2011.
The magical evening started with guests
proceeding, or rather, being transported, into the
dining hall-turned-royal hall by WA students
dressed as royal servants. As the 21st century
spectators were served dinner, “Aye Milord and
nay Milady,” were answers constantly heard
accompanying the background harp music. The
festive Medieval-reenactment continued as the
Honor choirs and orchestras performed
emotionally stirring selections.
The dramatic performance followed a combination of comedy and contemporary
dialogue, while maintaining a strong spiritual and Medieval-British aspect involving
the Royal Court’s dilemma. “As I heard the proper accents, the funny jokes, and saw
such poise, I completely forgot that I was watching a high school performance and
thoroughly enjoyed a professional show,” a guest commented afterwards. Madrigal
Dinner playwright, Mrs. Laura Groves added, “It is only after I hear the beautiful choir
sing and see the radiant lights sparkle, that everything comes together. Only then does the
Christmas season arrive in my heart.” The Madrigal dinner holds a special place in
Westminster Academy’s repertoire of performance-outreach events.

U
More than a book… Yearbook
The end of the year at WA is always busy with seniors’ anxious preparations for
graduation and underclassmen’s unrivaled excitement for the imminent
summer vacation. Yerds (yearbook nerds), however, are found diligently
revising the final drafts of soon-to-be official WA archives. The award-winning
final product arrives a few weeks later, proudly displaying the combined efforts
of middle and high school staffs’ months of writing, photographing and
editing. Below are excerpts from an exclusive interview with the yearbook staff:
Who is in the lead?
Editors-in-Chief Kelly Oakes and Darcy Maher have been on the staff five and
four years, respectively, and this year have truly “led by coming behind the scenes
and supporting the younger members,” says yearbook mentor, Ms. Carol Neal.
There are several other seniors, Shelby Shuford and Melinda Faulk, who helped
the project immensely.
What is this year’s theme?
This year’s theme was “On The Edge,” symbolic of WA students’ involved lives,
always looking forward to something else. While containing news, trends, stats
and more for the entire school year, it has also been dubbed a living document
with the Good News of Christ interwoven into each page. The value of the
book lies in its ability to withstand the test of time; when there is a class
reunion, the yearbook is certainly there.
nder the
direction of English
Department Head Mrs.
Maureen Breslin, Westminster
Academy submits literary entries garnered
primarily from the creative writing classes
and the general student body, to Broward
County’s annual Literary Fair. All the public
and private schools in Broward County
compete for recognition in this prestigious
event. Entries fall into twenty-four categories
and awards are given for each category.
This year, Allison Davis took second-place for
her cinquain, “The Waltz,” and Aaron Bibbee
won first-place for his myth entitled, “The
Shadow.”
Every year, the students of the creative
writing classes submit poems for publication
to various contests. Students who were
published this year include: Aaron Bibbee,
senior; Olivia Bibbee, sophomore; Natalie
Frandsen, junior; Zachary Gonzalez, junior;
Alex Marcroft, junior; Christy Marcroft,
junior; and Elisa Reino, senior.
Elisa Reino was further honored by having
her poem, “Soulless,” chosen from hundreds,
to compete for a $10,000 prize.
What is the yearbook philosophy?
Yearbook seeks to encompass the specialized skill of each student, whether
journalistic or technological to create a God-glorifying published product.
While an extremely independent sector, trust is essential when gathering
quotes and preparing material for the periodic deadlines. Long-lasting
friendships are formed, while helping create long-lasting archives.

he spring musical this year was a joyful
celebration of the Gospel, through the
production of Godspell. The exuberant cast
brought this musical to life, using many
theatrical devices such as pantomime, vaudeville,

styles, ranging from folk, pop, rock, to musical
comedy. The production shared the Gospel of
Jesus Christ, and the cast made a strong impact
on the entire audience. Most importantly,
throughout the performance, our students
portrayed the reality of Jesus Christ.

An Interview with
Mr. Richard Briggs
Signing Days
Mr. Richard Briggs is a veteran WA teacher
distinguished by peers and pupils for his
unique teaching style in the English classroom
and on the theatric stage. After 33 years of
service, Mr. Briggs will be refocusing his career
outside of WA.
Graduates from the class of 2012 who are
pursuing the Fine Arts at the next level and
received significant scholarships:
Why did you decide to
become an educator?
Catherine Guardabassi – Visual Arts

Luke Ferraguti

Luke is one of our Salutatorians
Leslie and Richard Briggs with daughters
Lisa (left) and Shelly (right).
I was a junior in high school when
I decided to become an English teacher;
I was inspired by my own high school language arts instructor. Later, I studied at a
teacher’s college in Massachusetts, where I majored in English and education, and
minored in drama. My interest in drama evolved with choir participation, show
organization and the combination of the two. Although I partook in acting, my true
interest grew in directing the events and helping mold the performance from behind
the scenes. For 12 years I taught Drama and American Literature as a public school
teacher in “America’s hometown,” Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Katie Kinsella – Performing Arts
Florida State University
Why did you come to south Florida?
Katrina Phillips – Visual Arts
University of Alabama
The Lord brought me and my family to Fort Lauderdale 33 years ago where an
unexpected lifetime stay yielded a wonderful legacy—with both of my daughters
graduating from WA! At the time, though, Westminster Academy was looking to
develop a drama department and an American Literature program. The Lord definitely
placed the puzzle pieces together! My wife and high school sweetheart Mrs. Leslie
Briggs was able to join me the following year. The first play I directed at WA was the
Miracle Worker, followed by the first musical, and self-written performance, Peter Pan.

Esther Teh – Performing Arts

What is the most marking experience you have ever had?
While teaching in the public school system, I had to take Christianity and hang it on
the coat rack before entering the classroom. Teaching and faith were like oil and water—
immiscible, until I came to WA. My teaching experience has been my mission field for
the past 33 years, as I have been able combine my expertise with what I truly believe.
Did you have a specific teaching philosophy?
Yes, the art of educating consists of 80% God-given talent and 20% training. My job as
an educator is to bring out the best in each student; to see the potential each pupil
holds as an individual. Hopefully each student leaves my English class and drama
program with “ultimate communicator” skills, speaking and teamwork aptness that will
aid him or her through life.
What are your future plans?
God has always presented me with what I’ve had to do. Although I have been teaching
some of the curriculum such as the Scarlet Letter for 45 years, I have never been bored;
students always present interesting perspectives to the discussion. Rather than a
retirement this will be a period of refocusing. I would like to continue being busy with
what I love to do.
Thank you Mr. Richard Briggs for your 33 years here at WA!

Amazing!
Spiritual
Since their freshmen year, the Class of
2012 would meet weekly before school
for a time of Praise and Worship.
Leaders of the class started the site
Daily Encouragement on Facebook,
where WA students would post
Scripture, prayers, and Christian videos
to encourage each other.
Academics
The class collectively received over
$8,000,000 in scholarship offers.
Collectively, their strong work ethic and
outstanding test scores resulted in SAT
and ACT averages being higher than
any previous class graduating from WA,
there were 16 ties for the top
10 of the class.
Talented
More than 60% of the graduates
participated in one or more athletics
and/or the fine arts their senior year,
and more than 20% of the class will go
on to compete at the collegiate level in
sports or pursue majors in Fine Arts.
Servants
This class has performed more than
41,000 hours of service; averaging 357
hours per student of which more than
30% of the students had amassed over
500 hours. We look forward to seeing
how the Lord will continue to use this
outstanding class for His glory.

Homecoming
W
estminster Academy displayed its “lion’s
pride” school spirit during the 2011-2012
homecoming week. Dr. Orsino introduced the week of
festivities by reminding the student body that it should
have fun, but retain the ultimate goal: to glorify God
through every activity. To incite school spirit, the upper
school celebrated with dress-up day themes: an
underwater wonderland for middle school and Disney
World parks for the high school. Seniors were Animal
Kingdom, juniors Magic Kingdom, sophomores Disney
Hollywood Studios, and
freshmen EPCOT.
The week started with Tacky
Tourist Tuesday, an
opportunity for students to
dress as stereotypical
vacationers. “I decided to go
for the sunburnt look, it seems
the most appropriate
Maverick Leahy
imitation,” said the red, and
raccoon-eyed senior “tourist,” Mark Newsom. The
following day gave each grade a chance to showoff
some Disney style as princesses, gorilla-men, foreigners,
and movie stars pranced the halls of WA. Beach Day
followed suit permitting the high schoolers to spend a
sunny day on the sand complete with recreation and
fun. A “spirit day” concluded the dress-up week in
preparation for the Friday night homecoming game.
The night had an early start, with an Alumni pre-game
BBQ dinner. Fans soon started arriving to witness the
spectacle. The lions held a strong lead through the first
and second quarter. As halftime approached, the long-
Josh Orsino
awaited crowning of the
homecoming king and queen
drew eyes to the enthusiastic
senior court members. At last,
Mr. Jeffery Jacques dubbed
Luke Ferraguti and Emily
Tucker the WA monarchs. A
game awaited and with a
huge fan base supporting the
WA football players from the
bleachers, Westminster Academy Varsity Cheerleaders
won an amazing 28-14 victory against
its rival, Mater Christian Academy.
Homecoming 2011 was truly a great experience
for the WA community. From the funky outfits
to the well-played game, students and faculty
alike were reminded of how God uses us to
complete his magnificent work. As servants of
His kingdom, we use the homecoming
opportunity not only for our enjoyment, but as a
chance to encourage and bond with one another
as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Excellence
in Athletics
Maggie Botkin
Maggie was ten when she started to ride,
following in her sister’s footsteps. She began
at Millpond Farm in Coconut Creek,
Florida, which is owned and operated by a
WA family. She continued her career riding
for Jimmy Torano and finished her high
school career with Alan Korotkin at
Castlewood Farms in Wellington, Florida.
She is looking forward to continuing to ride at Oklahoma
State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. At Oklahoma
State, Maggie will be part of the Hunt Seat Team, competing
against NCAA Women’s Equestrian teams.
Taylor Ellis
Taylor was born with a love for
horses. She is a member of the South
Florida Hunter Jumper Association,
Palm Beach Hunter Jumper
Association, and the Marshall and
Sterling League—among other riding associations. She has
won numerous events and awards, but her favorites have
been from the SFHJA. In 2011, she was awarded the
“Sportsmanship Award” which was voted on by her peers.
Taylor traveled to New York, in September 2011, to
compete in the “Marshall and Sterling National Finals.”

Winter Court
E
very year students look forward to the Winter
Court basketball game and the Spirit Week that
leads up to it. The Spirit Week theme was “cities”;
Seniors proudly picking Juneau, Juniors as LA,
Sophomores as NYC, and Freshmen as Dallas.
Wacky dress-up days ranged from “Senior Citizen
Day” to “12 Days of Christmas.”
The festivities began over the weekend, when the
classes got together to decorate their respective
hallways. The fun continued throughout the week
with the highlight being the crowning of the Winter
Court king and queen at our basketball game against
Lauderdale Lakes Academy.
Winter Court was especially unique this year because
Senior David
Imber, Junior
David Welch
and other
students began
a spirit group
named the
“Lion Loonies.”
The group
began via
Facebook, and
it caught on
throughout the school, promoting team spirit and
hype. The entire student body began wearing
specially designed t-shirts, making signs and
supporting the Lion’s Basketball Team. The Loonies
were a small, but growing group of supporters who
were committed to spreading the word about home
games and attending every home game.
Varsity Men’s Basketball Team
Friday’s pep-rally got the whole Lion’s family ready
to defeat Lauderdale Lakes Academy! Everyone in
the stands was pumped up at the pep-rally, after the
cheerleaders performed their up-beat routine. The
crowd went wild as the Senior Winter Court
nominees endured a surprise dance-off in front of
their peers! Afterwards, the Seniors enjoyed a
relaxing Movie Night, at the West Athletic Complex.
Saturday’s basketball game finally arrived and the
Winter Court King and Queen were announced at
halftime. Congratulations to graduating seniors,
Brandon Herndon and Darcy Maher for being voted
King and Queen by their peers. To top it off, the
Lion’s Basketball Team triumphantly defeated
Lauderdale Lakes 69 to 41!
“We had such
a great turn
out at the
Winter Court
game, it
really
pumped our
team up.”

P
raise God for this year’s remarkable dinner auction—
Wild About WA. Each year, we gather together for our
annual dinner auction to celebrate what God is doing at WA.
Once again, as in years past, we were truly blessed by God’s
grace and a wonderful evening of fun, food and fellowship.
It was also an extraordinary opportunity to raise funds for
God’s Kingdom work at WA. The event was a great success as
more than $138,763 was raised for His children at WA.
The “Heart Raise” portion of our auction is being used to
enhance technology with the purchase of iPads. The cutest
auction item was our Toy Yorkie puppy, named—Romeo!
Romeo enjoyed the auction, meeting everyone, and loves his
new home.
Many thanks to our auction chair, Katy Singh, and the
acquisition chair, Wanda Alday, along with the entire
committee, who gave of their time and talents to make this
such a wonderful evening.
A special thank you also goes to our concert band and
Mr. Jeff Carroll, for their willingness to share their musical
gifts and talents, at the auction.

Fishers of Men
WA’s Annual Fishing
Tournament
The WA community enjoyed a great day of fishing,
food and fellowship at the WA Fishers of Men
Tournament! This event, which has become a
tradition at WA, is a fun time for fishermen (and
fisherwomen) of all ages and skill levels, to enjoy
fishing with friends and the community.
A special thank you to Denise Ellis and Katy Singh,
for organizing this exciting tournament!
Fish, fellowship
and fun.
WA Catches
the Fever
Each year Westminster holds a special Open
House called “Spring Fever”. The event is open to
current and prospective students and parents,
where they can play and tour the school. Bounce
houses, bungee jumping, carnival games and
water slides are just a few of the entertaining
activities held at Spring Fever. This year, it was in
conjunction with the Easter Egg Hunt held by
the Children’s Ministry at Coral Ridge
Presbyterian Church. The children enjoyed
playing in the pool and participated in a cake
walk. Face painting and cotton candy were a few
favorites as well! Live music along with hotdogs
and hamburgers made the day memorable, and
all of the kids had a fun-filled afternoon. Come
join us at Spring Fever this year, and enjoy the
cheerful day! We look forward to seeing you and
your family, March 23, 2013!

Booster Club Athletic
Pavilion Dedicated
The Athletic Complex is one of the best facilities of its kind in the area. It
was further enhanced by the addition of the athletic pavilion.
The pavilion was officially opened following a ribbon cutting ceremony
and dedication prayer led by Pastor Rob Pacienza. Our varsity cheerleader’s
held the ribbon as Orlando and Ryan Sharpe cut the ribbon. The Sharpes’
spearheaded the fundraising efforts and construction of the pavilion. Ryan,
was in his senior year and took the time to solicit and assist his dad with
project management.
The pavilion has been a great asset to the west campus facilities providing
shelter and a great picnic space for events. Athletes and coaches from other
schools have been heard commenting on benefits of the pavilion and the
facilities as a whole.
A special thank you to the Booster Club committee and supporters for all
they have done and continue to do to support WA.

Jeff Colker ’81
As a sophomore in high school, one could
say Jeff Colker was not the prime example
of a WA student. “Teachers like Ms. Carol
Neal, Mr. Dick Briggs and Mr. Tom Fagley
knew I was struggling and would stop me in
the hallway to let me know they were praying
for me,” remembers Colker. Christ’s love
was truly revealed to Jeff in his senior year
at Westminster Academy, but even after
graduating, there was no thought of going
into church work, much less international
missions. The Colker’s lives were radically
changed in 2005, when Jeff and his wife
Pam strongly felt God’s calling to serve in
Eastern Europe. In an apparently insane
move, highly discouraged by those closest
to him, Jeff gave away his business, sold
most of his physical possessions and
bought twelve one-way tickets to Ukraine
for him, Pam, and their ten children. “We
had no clue as to why we were going. It was
after we took the step of faith that God
opened the doors,” said Colker. Soon the
purpose of their journey became clear; Jeff,
whose strengths were in chemistry, and
business, was to attend to orphans medical
and dental needs. Today, Mercy Trucks
International sends ambulances-turnedmedical units all over the world to carry
out the original intent of the Colker’s
mission. “All I had to do was be obedient.
This obedience is the same spirit of
dedication found in WA instructors. Looking
back now, I know God was training me for
missions through my education at WA,”
exclaimed Colker. To find out more about
the Colker’s missions please visit
www.mercytrucks.org.
Andrea Puskar ’87 Culliford
Dr. Andrea Puskar Culliford, has always
been interested in helping people, and with
a nurse in her family, medicine was the
inevitable route for her. From an early age,
Andrea started to volunteer once a week at
Holy Cross Hospital, where she was born.
Meanwhile, she was enrolled as a high
school student at WA, where history class
absolutely fascinated her. “I received an
excellent education at WA, where teachers
care so much about the student,” recalls
Culliford. “Although I wanted to go to a big
school at the time, my mom made the best
decision in sending me to Westminster.”
Graduating with a European History major
from the prestigious University of
Pennsylvania, Andrea went on to study
Biology in a post-baccalaureate program. Her
study experience abroad includes Oxford
University in England and anthropological
work in the mountains of Nepal. Andrea,
her husband Alfred and six-year old
daughter Grayson Elizabeth, live in New
York, where Andrea, a UM Medical school
graduate and Columbia University medical
resident, is currently the Chief of
Gastroenterology at St. Barnabas Hospital in
the Bronx.

Beaupied
Jason and Marcy Beaupied often felt the
Lord calling them to a mission. The Lord
gave them a desire to minister through the
avenue of adoption. In September of 2011,
the Beaupieds filed adoption papers through
a Russian-American agency. After much
prayer and paperwork, the Beaupieds were
blessed in March 2012 with a 14-month-old
baby girl named Evelina Meg Beaupied. “She
has a fun, adventurous personality, and is
always laughing and loving.” Their son
Brandon, loves singing and being a bigbrother to Evelina.

Does Westminster
Academy Prepare
Students to Face
Life’s Challenges?
WA alumna
Wendy Hawkins
’91 Hermes, now a
lawyer and mother
of two, reflects on
the importance of
a grounded
Christian
foundation in a
young person’s
life. Wendy
attended
Westminster
Academy from
fifth through
twelfth grade. As
an active member
of the student body, she participated in
cheerleading, tennis, and theater.
However, her true passion was law—a love
that began at a young age when she
participated in student government at
school, “I always had a discerning sense of
right versus wrong, not to mention a desire
for justice.” After graduating from WA, she
attended Texas Christian University, where
she majored in Political Science. This is
where her true trials began. “Religion class
was the most challenging,” she recalls, “It
was a battle in every class, as liberal views
were thrown at me, but I kept strong by
remembering the Apologetics, defense of the
faith, that I was taught in my senior year at
WA. The academic and spiritual
preparation I gained at WA, were essential
in college.” Wendy received her graduate
degree at Baylor Law School, where she
met her husband. She currently lives in
Dallas, Texas, and practices part-time law
in malpractice defense. “I am truly
thankful to my parents, and my
Westminster Academy teachers, for
investing so much in me. What I learned at
WA, serves me the most in life’s
challenges.”
April Holt ’98 Knapp
“It’s still so much fun for me to go back to
WA and see the familiar faces of people that
taught me,” stated April Holt Knapp. For
April, getting the chance to return to WA
and Fort Lauderdale is a less frequent, and
more anticipated event, than that of many
other alumni. This is because April and her
family, have resided in Beijing, China for
the past six years.
From 1994 to 1998, April attended
Westminster Academy for high school,
along with her five brothers and sisters
from her blended family. April considers
Westminster a great quality school, filled
with quality people—both teachers and
students. Based off of her experiences at
WA, April encourages current students to
“realize just how much their teachers care
about them as people and about their success
Chrisy Martin ’94
Byram
Chrisy Byram and her husband
Tim, became proud parents of
Austin Cade Byram, born on
August 9, 2011 weighing
5 lbs. 14 oz.
Chrisy and Tim live in Tennessee
and maintain a relationship with
WA, as Austin’s grandparents are
Ray and Fran Martin (former
WA teacher), as well as his aunt
and uncle, Amy Martin Jominy ’94
and Tyson Jominy ’94.
After graduating from Westminster
Academy, April attended University of
Florida where she met her husband, Justin
Knapp. They married a few years later and
now have a five-month-old son named
Judah. Before having Judah, April taught
English to college students who were
planning to go abroad for their
undergraduate or graduate degrees. With
April’s interest in living abroad and Justin’s
interest in Chinese business experience and
language, they decided to relocate to
Beijing. Justin is currently working for a
large international PR company, heading
their China Outbound practice.
Since leaving Westminster and moving to
China, April’s life has been filled with new
challenges, experiences and excitement.
Through these experiences, April has grown
closer to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
“Because I don’t have my family and friend
support network from home, I’ve learned to
turn to the Lord a lot more with my daily
problems, struggles, worries and stresses.
Also, I’ve learned incredible lessons of
patience and trusting God’s timing, not my
own.” April considers it an amazing
opportunity to “truly be a light shining
before men–realizing that with every single
word or action, I have the opportunity to
reflect Christ and His character.”

Alumni
An Interview with Alumni President
Sandy Smith ’85 Hall
Mrs. Sandy Hall is one of the many alumni who has made
Westminster Academy her home. After attending WA from
kindergarten to twelfth grade, going off to college, and becoming a
teacher, she could not be happier to be making a difference at the
same place where such a difference was made to her.
Tell us about your time at WA:
I started attending Westminster Academy when I was
in kindergarten. I had the privilege of being in one of
the first classes of lifers here, graduating in 1985. It’s
amazing to have been here since the school was just
emerging, and to see the growth and continuation of a
beautiful PreK–12 program.
Did you feel that WA prepared you for
“the real world?”
Yes, I didn’t feel like I was in a bubble, but rather was
gaining skills necessary to keep strong in the faith. I
went off to Gordon College in Boston, then taught in
the public school system and eventually returned
home to Florida. I was raised with the Bible verse taken
from Ecclesiastes 4:12, “A cord of three strands is not
quickly broken.” The chord was made up of the school’s
strong education, my mom and dad’s prayers for
guidance and the church’s healthy environment, all
vital to my walk.
How did you decide to become an
elementary teacher?
By senior year in high school I could sense that it was
my calling, and not just to teach anywhere. I knew
that I would come back to Westminster Academy and
give back where so much had been given me. The
guidance counselor, Mr. Guy Metzger at the time,
advised me well. He wisely told me to not be bound by
my longing to return, but rather to experience new
things. The Lord was aware of my heart’s desire all
along, but He knew I needed to broaden my horizons
before returning. He allowed me to be stretched from
my Floridian surroundings, meet my wonderful
husband Dave in college and then ten years ago, when
my two daughters were little, to be planted back at WA
for good.
What does it mean to have your two
daughters attend WA as well?
I’m thrilled to have Alex, in twelfth grade, and Erika, in
eighth grade, continuing the legacy here. Not only are
they following in my footsteps, but they are enjoying
their surroundings as well. It’s neat to see them playing
basketball, the sport I competed in, and to see them
learning math with the same teacher I had.
What is different about WA?
This is a unique place. I’ve been teaching for nineteen
years, and between subbing and teaching, at both
Christian and public schools, I’ve had much experience
in different settings. It is only at Westminster Academy
that I’ve had parents coming up to me absolutely
amazed that their kids are coming in as 10th and 11th
graders and are loving school. “What is it? What’s so
different?” they ask. It’s because the teachers are caring,
and nurturing individuals, but most importantly,
because teaching is a ministry, not just class. I’m
privileged to be part of that contribution and
encouraged to hear it on the other side.
Tell us about your position on the Alumni
Association and the goals of the
organization:
I’ve been on the association since it started four or five
years ago and have since been elected president. As a
group, we strive to unite all WA alumni around the
country, whether homemakers or missionaries, and we
want them to know they’re still part of Westminster
Academy. We send freshmen in college “care packages”
and pray for them. We’ve also begun “homecoming on
the road” which is a program meant to reunite alumni
living far from WA. It’s a great ministry that has been
gaining much momentum and prayerfully it will grow
and be a great tool for the Kingdom.

Jenny Davell ’05 Dansby
Jenny Davell Dansby is a proud graduate
of Samford University. She was inspired to
influence others after attending
Westminster Academy. Jenny most vividly
recalls her “awesome” fine arts experience
at WA under the
direction of Mr.
Richard Briggs, who
challenged the “red
head” alto to sing
soprano as Anne of
Green Gables. “God
took a speech therapy
student and
transformed me into a lead role; it was
through WA musicals that I acquired the
confidence necessary for public speaking,”
reflects Dansby. Now a youth ministry
director, Jenny motivates kids everyday to
pursue their full potential for God’s glory.
Jenny is married to Elliott Dansby and
currently lives in Birmingham, Alabama,
where she uses her journalism skills in the
student ministry, at Dawson Baptist
Church.
Doug Rasku ’89 and
Scott Baugh ’92
Over the past 41 years, WA has excelled in
sending out students with a deep
understanding of the Bible and a strong
Christian worldview. For Doug Rasku and
Scott Baugh, who attended Westminster
Academy, our school played an important
part in instilling within them a desire to
pursue ministry. Scott serves as Journey
Church of Boynton Beach’s senior pastor
and Doug is the church’s executive pastor.
Doug has been married to Jacque for 19
years and they have two children, Jordan,
14, and Ryan, 11. “My experience at WA
meant a lot to me. I had very strong
relationships with many of my teachers,
some of whom are still teaching there
today!” Encouraged by his teachers and his
education from Westminster Academy,
Doug answered God’s call to ministry in
2008 when he was asked by longtime
friend Scott Baugh to partner with him in
serving Journey Church as its executive
pastor. Doug considers his involvement in
this church as “an incredible experience that
has been a huge blessing.”
Doug realizes the great impact WA has had
on his life, even after graduation. Doug
urges students not to take their experience

Serving in Slovenia
Javier Peña ’10
For two weeks, Javier Peña worked in Slovenia with Josiah Venture, a
non-profit organization that focuses on spreading the Gospel among
the youth of Central and Eastern Europe. With a population of more
than two million people, and with only one percent claiming to be
evangelical believers, the spiritual need in Slovenia is great.
“There’s
nothing better
than knowing
where God
wants you to
be. I thank
Him every day
for giving me
the desire and
the opportunity
to spread His
Gospel halfway
around the
world.”
– Javier Peña
During those two weeks over the summer, Javier became a part of
English Camp 2011, which focused on spreading the Good News by
teaching English to high school students, a language that is required
for Slovene students. He started out each day with a three-hour
English class in which he taught five beginning English learners.
Although challenging at first, he was able to connect and interact
with them as a teacher, and as a friend.
Javier said the biggest blessing was being able to bond with the
students through large group activities after each class, and through
small group discussions in the evenings. It was through these
discussions that Javier was able to share his testimony and show his
new friends that God loves them with an incomparable love, that
cannot be earned.
He admits that the biggest challenge came from some students’
beliefs that “good works” can get them into heaven. But with this
challenge, came a great opportunity to show them what Christ has
to offer, and the joy that He brings.
Now as a public relations junior at the University of Florida, Javier
hopes to work as a writer and spokesperson for a non-profit cause or
organization like Josiah Venture. One of his biggest prayers is to go
back to Slovenia to serve and continue sharing the free gift of
salvation with the people God has placed in his life—knowing his
efforts will sow seeds for the harvest.
Class of 1981 30th Reunion
By Joanna Chen Bryant, MD
For almost a year I had been planning my
family’s 8-hour trip home to Fort Lauderdale,
for the Class of 1981 30th Reunion. I
envisioned seeing classmates I hadn’t seen for
thirty years, catching up with what they’ve
been doing all this time, showing off my
family, seeing how the WA campus has grown,
and maybe even run into a few of my teachers.
Sandy Higerd Curran, Greg Sorensen and Chris
Baer took the initiative and started planning
our weekend on Facebook. Greg set up a group,
Westminster Class of ’81 30th Reunion.
I was nervous but excited to see everyone at the
homecoming football game! Greg Sorensen
and Nick Coppola were there with their wives.
David Lloyd, Gregg Coningsby, Mark
Kubiatowicz, Troy Zimmerman, Sally Smith,
Andrew Barbar, Kim Boals Pushkin, Steve
Smith, Jeff Runde, Jack Fleck, Jhoanna Kimbro
Lunetta, Lura Shaffer and others brought their
families. Some of us got taller (Gregg
Coningsby), some of us were ‘more prosperous’
(Jeff Runde, Greg Sorensen, David Lloyd,
Andrew Barbar), and some of us looked exactly
the same, but better (Jhoanna Kimbro Lunetta,
Troy Zimmerman, Mark Kubiatowicz).
It was fun to introduce my husband Peter and
kids to my classmates. At half time, we went on
the field for a group photo.
The next day, we met at WA for lunch and a
tour of the school. Memories of Dr. Wackes
walking the halls and Mr. DeRosa’s chemistry
experiments came flooding back. The new
computer labs are worth mentioning. We
definitely had nothing of the kind ‘back in the
day.’ They even have separate Mac and PC
rooms!
Reflecting back on our 30th reunion weekend
was invaluable. The friendships we made so
long ago have endured, and are strengthened
by social networking, namely, Facebook! Can’t
wait until our 40th Reunion!!

Your Prayers and Donations
Help Bridge the Gap
Each year WA enhances and improves the
teaching and learning opportunities to
inspire students to excel by using their gifts
and talents in all areas of the school ministry.
Innovative Technology for
Learning
Providing innovative technology is
important for today’s learner. With more
than 300 computers, 45 SMART Boards, 2
media centers, 5 computer labs, and a faculty
Mac program, enhancing technology in the
classroom remains a priority.
Excellent Co-Curricular
Programs
Educating and equipping students to succeed
in today’s world goes beyond learning in the
classroom. Your donations help to offset the
costs of providing the necessary equipment,
uniforms, competition fees and the overall
expenses of maintaining exceptional
programs that allow for 37 athletic teams,
21 fine arts courses, 9 performing arts
productions, and a nationally competitive
Robotics team.
Stewardship of Our Campuses
and Facilities
We all share the responsibility of being good
stewards of God’s school ministry and
facilities. God has entrusted into our care the
upkeep and improvement of His campuses.
“We are grateful to the generation who
went before us for providing a legacy of
giving. This year our goal is to raise
$1.2 million and we are committed to
continuing this legacy of giving for the
next generation. Thank you for
considering supporting the
Bridge the Gap annual fund.”
– Hank & Carole Sipowski, WA Grandparents
Each year your donations help to provide
the necessary funds to maintain, and
when appropriate, make improvements to
the campus.
Professional Development
for Teachers
Recruiting and retaining the most
qualified Christ-honoring professionals for
our students is a high priority. Through
your ongoing support, we have a
remarkable faculty and professional staff.
Because of your generosity we can provide
our faculty, staff, coaches and volunteers
an array of opportunities for professional
development. These training
opportunities are significant investments
when it comes to keeping our faculty on
the cutting edge of best practices in their
respective fields.
