Chamber Hosts SC Chamber of Commerce Lowcountry Grassroots Meeting Want to let our leaders in Columbia know what matters to you in business? Join the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce and the S.C. Chamber of Commerce for a Lowcountry Regional Grassroots Meeting at chamber headquarters on Friday, November 7th at 8:00 a.m. The grassroots meeting is an open-forum session and one of the first steps in creating the Competitiveness Agenda, the business community’s annual list of legislative priorities. It will begin with a legislative review from the S.C. Chamber’s Public Policy staff before moving into an open discussion of legislative issues. There is no cost to attend. Chamber Jr. Leadership Students Receive Scholarships The chamber’s Jr. Leadership Program presented three scholarships to recent high school graduates Audrey Bensch, Heidi Stine and Greg Warren, members of the chamber’s 2013 class, thanks to a generous grant provided by Driving Young America. The college scholarships were awarded to the graduates who volunteered during the 2013 Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance. In the words of Jr. Leadership recipient Heidi Stine, “I am very grateful for your contribution to my education and support of my career as an animator. Thank you for believing in my potential and encouraging my success.” The chamber’s Jr. Leadership Program is a 10-month program that fosters leadership, community awareness and self-development for outstanding high-school juniors in the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton area. Manesiotis will take over the position after the 2015 event. He has served as Communications Committee chairman for seven years and has served as a past president of the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association and as County Commissioner of Recreation (PALS). Charter 1 North Realty announced that realtor Andy Twisdale has been appointed to the SC Wind and Hail Underwriting Association board of directors. The association was established to provide an adequate market for insurance coverage necessary to the economic welfare of the coastal areas of SC. Twisdale formerly served on the Hilton Head Island-Blufffton Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Cera Products, Inc. recently donated nearly five tons of its CeraLyterice-based oral rehydration solution to humanitarian organization Direct Relief. The company’s donation was sent to Liberia and Sierra Leone to aid efforts to treat Ebola patients. The rice-based oral electrolyte blends correct dehydration, restoring fluid volume and cell balance for various medical conditions. Watercookies, Inc., a 501 © (3) whose mission is to educate young families about clean water, announced the appointment of Kim Jones to its board of directors. Jones is the director of the Town of Bluffton stormwater management division. Weniger Plastic Surgery, May River Dermatology, and LUX - A Medical Spa, won first place in the Excellence in Design Awards at the ASID Carolinas Fall Conference. The facility’s design, by Joni Vanderslice and Jenny Ladutko of J Banks Design, was featured in the healthcare facility over 7,000 sq. ft. category. HONORING EDUCATION TRAILBLAZER Chancellor Jane Upshaw University of South Carolina Beaufort Chancellor Jane Upshaw, the first woman to head a USC comprehensive university, recently announced her retirement, set for August 2015. Known for her many years of dedication to USCB, she still has a few important initiatives underway, including completion of a new recreational center, the addition of fraternities and sororities and collaboration with the Town of Hilton Head Island to open a hospitality management degree program on the island. Under her steady hand, USCB’s enrollment has more than doubled since it began offering four-year degrees a decade ago, now serving nearly 2,000 students at its two campuses. Today, USCB is recognized as a regional intellectual and cultural center, preparing graduates to participate successfully in communities locally and around the globe. When Upshaw joined USCB in 1981 she was an adjunct professor in mathematics, later earning a doctorate and rising to the rank of associate professor, then director of development in 1996 and dean in 1999. She was named chancellor in 2002. A trailblazer in the world of academics, she leaves a lasting impression on students and colleagues, and our community for transforming education in the Lowcounty. For serving the community and enriching the quality of life for area residents USCB was awarded the chamber’s 2013 Organization of the Year Award.
