HONORING EDUCATION TRAILBLAZER
Chancellor Jane Upshaw
University of South Carolina Beaufort
Chancellor Jane Upshaw, the first woman
to head a USC comprehensive university,
recently announced her retirement, set for
August 2015.
Known for her many years of dedication
to USCB, she still has a few important
initiatives underway, including completion
of a new recreational center, the addition of
fraternities and sororities and collaboration with the Town of Hilton
Head Island to open a hospitality management degree program on
the island.
Under her steady hand, USCB’s enrollment has more than doubled
since it began offering four-year degrees a decade ago, now serving
nearly 2,000 students at its two campuses. Today, USCB is recognized
as a regional intellectual and cultural center, preparing graduates to
participate successfully in communities locally and around the globe.
When Upshaw joined USCB in 1981 she was an adjunct professor
in mathematics, later earning a doctorate and rising to the rank of
associate professor, then director of development in 1996 and dean in
1999. She was named chancellor in 2002.
A trailblazer in the world of academics, she leaves a lasting
impression on students and colleagues, and our community for
transforming education in the Lowcounty. For serving the community
and enriching the quality of life for area residents USCB was awarded
the chamber’s 2013 Organization of the Year Award.
Asked what she will miss most, “The excitement as each new year
begins, interacting with students and all that great team spirit,” said
Upshaw, adding,“I’ll always be a Sand Shark at heart.”
