President’s Message

Well, I hope that you have been able to keep warm in our second bizarre this winter in a row.
As I enter the last quarter of my Presidency, I want to take a moment to speak to you about our future.
I’ve mentioned several times that a major reason we successfully moved our shul to our beautiful home in
Voorhees was the foresight and planning of our past leadership. Their hard work and perseverance has
given us a gift that we will enjoy for many, many years to come. With that in mind, our current leadership
believes that we can give a similar gift to Beth El’s next generation. Specifically, I mean the establishment
of the Endowment for the Future (please see the ad further on page 9 in the Beth El News).
There is a lot of confusion about what an endowment is and what it is not, so let me take a moment to provide you with a highlevel view. In its strictest sense, the establishment of an endowment is a form of fundraising. However, it differs from what I will
call “operational” fundraising (i.e. fundraising covering current operations) in a very important way. The money raised for an
endowment is never meant to be touched (we refer to this as the “principal”). Rather, the money is held in trust and invested;
the income earned on the principal is then used to fund various purposes. Clearly, the larger the endowment, the more income
that can be earned on the principal and the more purposes that income can fund. Unlike operational fundraising which is used
currently, the money raised for an endowment benefits an organization into perpetuity.
For Beth El, the idea behind our Endowment for the Future is to provide a growing nest egg for the synagogue. The income
earned on our endowment will alleviate a great deal of the strain that pressures our operating budget year in and year out. The
intent is to utilize the income from our endowment to fund such things as financial assistance to members who cannot afford to
pay, the Jewish education of our children (and adults) and the rich programming that is so important to our membership. As
such, the future Beth El will be far less reliant on dues and operational fundraising to fulfill our mission of integrating, educating,
and elevating.
Another nuance to the Endowment for the Future is that there are several ways to contribute and many of those ways do not
involve an up-front cash outlay. Certainly, immediate contributions would be accepted, but we expect that many people will
utilize one or more of the following methods: (1) bequests in wills; (2) naming the Endowment as a beneficiary on a life insurance
policy; (3) redirection of a Donor Advised Fund (e.g. one that already exists at the Jewish Community Foundation or elsewhere);
and/or (4) contributions in installments.
The oversight of Endowment for the Future will be undertaken by the Endowment Board. While established by the Beth El
Board of Trustees, the Endowment Board is independent of the Trustees and its sole charge is to look after and protect the
Endowment. The funds themselves will be segregated and they will be administered and managed by professional advisors
under the supervision of the Endowment Board.
I cannot overstate the importance of the Endowment for the Future. Our Endowment will put us on firm financial footing for
generations to come. It is a great legacy that we will be leaving to our children and their children! I am pleased to report that our
Board of Trustees is 100% behind the Endowment. I want to thank our Strategic Planning Committee and specifically Allen
Wilen and Harvey Jacob for doing the heavy lifting to make our Endowment a reality. We certainly hope that you will participate.

One last thing I would like to mention here. By now, you probably know that Allen Wilen has been nominated to succeed me as
President. Allen has worked diligently and largely behind the scenes over the past several years; he has overseen such important issues as the completion of the Voorhees construction and he has re-established and chaired the Strategic Planning Committee. Prior to these roles, Allen served as our Treasurer. Allen and his family have been close friends of our family for many
years. We are very fortunate to have someone as capable, hard-working and diligent as Allen as our future President. I wish
Allen the best of everything.

The Ladder at Beth El
As you read in the companion message
from Rabbi Arnowitz in this issue of the
Beth El News, he has accepted a new position as a Senior Rabbi in Norfolk, Virginia.
As a reminder of his rabbinic roots, Rabbi
Arnowitz even chose to go to a Beth El!
(We have franchises all over the country!)
And yet, while it may only be a coincidence that Rabbi
Arnowitz is going from one Beth El to another, I think that it is a
fitting metaphor for both his career here and his chosen path
for the future. As everyone who visits our synagogue knows,
the original Beth El was the site on which the famous ladder to
heaven rested. Jacob, having left his parents’ home to strike
out on his own, sees this magical ladder with angels beckoning
him to climb up from where he rests to the place that Gd knows
he can be. In much the same way, Gd has opened up Rabbi
Arnowitz’s eyes and his heart and has put before him a ladder,
beckoning him to rise up higher and to lead a congregation of
his own. And yet, Rabbi Arnowitz is starting much higher
on the ladder than our ancient ancestor did. From his current
vantage point, Rabbi Arnowitz can look around at what he has
accomplished at our Beth El; the many programs he has
initiated, the fabulous Hebrew High School he took to the top
and the many lives he has touched through his teaching and
wise counsel, all with tremendous satisfaction. No wonder
each and every one of us will be sad to see him go. But, the
ladder beckons and he must respond to the call. His new Beth
El awaits. Beth El in Norfolk had the wisdom to ask Rabbi
Arnowitz to be their spiritual leader, but only we here know how
truly blessed they will be for having made that decision. We
wish Rabbi Arnowitz, Tami and the boys all the best!
In Rabbi Jeffrey Arnowitz I have found one of the closest
rabbinic colleagues I have ever had. From the moment we met
in New York nearly eight years ago, we knew that it was right.
After five minutes of conversation we were speaking as if we
had known each other our entire lives. He is more than just a
rabbinic partner, he is also one of my closest friends and I am
grateful for the time we have shared here at our Beth El. We
have learned a great deal from one another. And, that is why it
gives me such satisfaction to know that Rabbi Arnowitz will be
leading our congregation while I am away on Sabbatical. From
the last week in March until the first of August I will be away
from the pulpit, taking time to study, travel, reflect & regroup.
Sometimes, you have to step away from the ladder to gain a
better perspective on where you are and where it is that Gd
wants you to go. Therefore, part of what I plan to do is to visit
other synagogues around the country and in Israel; congregations that I have admired from afar but never had the time to
visit on Shabbat. I want to study best practices by watching
others and then bring back what I have learned to you. I am
deeply indebted to the leadership of our congregation for
affording me this opportunity.
There is a reason that so many congregations are named
“Beth El”. On one level, it’s because Beth El is more frequently
mentioned in the Bible than any other town except Jerusalem.
But more importantly, the name Beth El symbolizes transformation, growth and success; in ancient times as well as today.
Every day Gd puts a ladder in front of us and His angels bid
that we climb higher. Our challenge is to always have the
courage it takes to reach for the next rung.

“We are Family,
Get Up Ev'rybody and Sing”
We often refer to the Beth El family. As I
reviewed the Passover story, I realized, a
family is not only our metaphor for a synagogue community; it is the Torah’s as well.
I draw this conclusion from the Torah’s
command to make a Passover offering.
Right before the 10th plague, God commands Moses, “Speak
to the Israelite community and say that on the tenth of this
month each of them shall take a lamb to a family, a lamb to a
household.” Moses then tells the elders of Israel, “Go, pick out
lambs for your family and slaughter the Passover offering.” It
is clear from these Exodus verses that the original Passover
offering was to be made by individuals in their houses. The
Passover offering is a family offering, which makes sense,
since it was being made to provide blood for the doorposts of
the house to protect the family from the 10th plague, the slaying of the first born. The Torah goes on to say that this is how
you should observe Passover for all time.
However, after forty years of wandering in the desert, the Jews
are camped on the banks of the Jordan River, preparing to
cross into the Promised Land. Moses explains how they
should make the Passover sacrifice once they have entered
the land. In Deuteronomy 16:2 he states, “You shall slaughter
the Passover sacrifice for the Lord your God, from the flock &
the herd, in the place where the Lord will choose to establish
his name.” The end of the verse is referring to the Temple in
Jerusalem. So how can this be? Moses has clearly taken a
sacrifice whose very essence was in the family home & transplanted it to the Temple.
Perhaps the two verses are not mutually exclusive. Moses is
predicting a time when Jerusalem will be the spiritual home
for all Jews. In the Temple, the family Passover sacrifice
became the communal Passover sacrifice because there is
no difference; we are one family. With the destruction of the
Temple in 70CE, synagogues assumed the role of spiritual
home & so we are according to the Torah’s logic, one Beth El
family.
This metaphor has taken on special meaning for me now.
Over the summer, I will be assuming the post of senior rabbi at
Congregation Beth El in Norfolk, VA. Tami and I are excited
for this new beginning, though we will, of course, miss our
current Beth El family. A few of you have mentioned that you
feel like you watched me grow up as a rabbi and are now
launching me into the world. I love that metaphor for this
transition process. For when a child grows up & goes to
college or gets married, he doesn’t ever truly leave his family.
Similarly, I feel that I will always be part of the Beth El family
and that this Beth El family will always be part of mine.
Of course, I am looking forward to these next several months.
After all Rabbi Krupnick has done to guide and mentor me in
my rabbinate, I am thrilled to be able to help the congregation
while he enjoys a much-deserved three-month sabbatical.
And, during that time, I am looking forward to continuing to
celebrate the many accomplishments & successes we have
enjoyed together over these past eight years & the bright
future Beth El will enjoy with its new Klei Kodesh team firmly in
place. I am especially excited to see how Rabbi Arnow, whom

I have grown to respect and admire over the course of this
year, bring his special talents to the congregation.
As I consider the past eight years we have spent together, I am
reminded of a beautiful quote by Joyce Brothers. She said,
“When you look at your life, the greatest happinesses are family
happinesses.” I thank you all for so many happinesses, for
sharing your lives with me and my family and for helping me to
grow into my role as rabbi. May we all go from strength to
strength, or in the immortal words of Sister Sledge, “We are
family, get up ev'rybody and sing!”

Social Action was very busy these past few months delivering all your wonderful donations. In December, as you remember, we collected toys and gift cards. These gifts were delivered to Catholic Charities in Pennsauken. They were so appreciative and really wanted you all to know how special you made the holiday for some very needy families. In January
we were hit with a lot of snow and many of you gave generously in the warm clothing department. We collected a full car
load of warm coats, hats, gloves and even boots. We know this winter they will certainly be needed.
February will be a quiet month in terms of collections. However, for those of you looking to do a mitzvah, don't forget we
are still cooking every month for those in need. Check out the calendar for dates and times.
Also, we have a mitzvah mobile to help the seniors with transportation issues. We need volunteers. Please call and see
what you can do to help one of Beth El's family.
In March we will start collecting Passover food for Samaritan Hospice. The items needed are:
Boxes of Matzah - Kedem Grape Juice - Jar of Gefilte Fish - Dessert Items for Passover
Every year hospice is so grateful for our packages, they really give comfort to our loved ones at a very difficult time.
This year, you can try to make your own package and fill it with all the necessary items... perhaps even put in a note...

Beth El's Men's Club will hold its annual paid-up
membership celebration on Wednesday, March 2.
It will be held in conjunction with Rabbi Krupnick's talk, the
third in his now legendary series "Happy Wife, Happy
Life." We will have a FREE DINNER in the social hall for all
men who are paid up this year, followed by the Rabbi's
talk. (The exact time of the event was not yet set at press
time.)
The talk following dinner is free to all, (men only) of the Beth
El community, regardless of club membership status. Remember, Rabbi Krupnick is leaving for his sabbatical on April
1st and this will be his last major address before the High
Holidays!
While the event is free, dinner reservations must be made in
order to bring in enough food (from the Cherry Grill restaurant) for all. Please reserve your seat at the table with Jerry
Bralow at [email protected] or by phone 856-751-5626.
Purim is just around the corner, so it's time to re-organize
your list - the Shalch Manot list, of course! Don't be late,
send back your response ASAP. If you can help in any way
(packing, schlepping, delivering), let us know.
The next big event in our Club's calendar is Men's Club
Shabbat, which will be held on Shabbat Hol HaMo'ed Pesah,
April 23. Members of the Club will participate in all aspects of
the Shabbat service and a special, delicious Kosher for
Passover lunch will be served to the congregation. Any
Club member who wants to help and/or have a part in the

A Great Start to 2011
We began the year 2011 in an amazing fashion. The Early Childhood Center held its second annual Global Family Fun Day
on January 2. Rabbi Krupnick and Rabbi Arnowitz read stories to the children, Hazzan Pomerantz - Boro sang with
them, and everyone enjoyed the facepainting, Ga-Ga, Bingo and cookie decorating. There were teachers who came and
supervised play in the “Fun With Ones” room, the “Time for Twos” and the “Lego’s and Building” room.
Thank you to Habonim for preparing and selling the food; Young Associates for providing us with a face painter, PTG for
buying the wonderful blow-up globes for give-aways, Sisterhood for running Bingo and Men’s Club for running the Ga-Ga
tournament.
What comes in like a lion and goes out as a clown?
The month of March (2011) because Purim
is March 20. Here at Beth El there are so many fun things to do for Purim. On Saturday night there is Megillah reading
early in the evening for families and a later one with a Cabaret for adults only. On Sunday, there is the annual Purim
Carnival with fun for all.
At the ECC we will celebrate in school with a costume parade and telling the story of Purim in a special assembly.
April may bring showers, but it definitely is Passover.
The children will learn all about the story
of the exodus and act out their own Seder. There is nothing quite as amazing as listening to 2, 3 and 4 year olds recite all
4 Questions – the Mah Nishtanah - in Hebrew for the first time. The children learn all the parts of the Seder and know
clearly that miracles can happen as they did during the 10 Plagues and the splitting of the Red Sea.
Come join us on Wednesday, April 13 to witness the Model Seder at the Early Childhood Center of Beth El.

Congregation Beth El is again providing
Tzedakah Boxes to our Daled class along
with their Siddurim. This is the fourth year
that our children get a first hand experience in personal
giving which we hope will continue throughout their
lives. The children are encouraged to drop coins into
the box until filled. It will be their decision as to what
charity they will support.

Beckerman’s new book When They Come for
Us, We’ll Be Gone, is a compelling account of
the movement to free Soviet Jewry. Beckerman,
a reporter for the Forward newspaper, brings
recent history vividly to life in this carefully researched book. The author tells two parallel stories: one is the story of the Soviet Jews who
made their religion & their wish to emigrate to Israel into a protest movement; the other is that of the American Jews who
supported them. Beckerman traces the roots of the movement
to watershed events including the US civil rights movement
and the birth of Israel. He also suggests that advocacy for Soviet Jewry “taught American Jews how to lobby.” You’ll find

Women’s League Institute Semester
Talmud for Today: An Introduction to the Talmud and Its (Mostly) Timeless Wisdom
What do the Rabbis say about people with physical disabilities or
mental illness? What makes rabbis cry? What do you say when you
visit your teacher? These are some of the topics we’ll encounter in
this six-class series, in which we will study selections from the first
chapter of Masechet Hagiga, the tractate of the Talmud on bringing
sacrifices to the Temple for holidays. We’ll get a sense of what the
Talmud is and what it’s like to study it. At the end of each class, we
will consider the lessons and relevance of the evening’s text for our
lives today. All texts will be brought in English. No experience
necessary—just curiosity!
