Rail-Trail event
on Saturday,
March 12
Rail-Trail Council’s “Winter
Trail Days” offers a variety of
events to help chase away the winter blues.
Saturday March 12th, 10 AM
“Discover the Secrets”
of the D&H
Take a trip back in time when
mining, processing and transportation of coal fueled the economy
of our region. We will meet in
the parking lot of Franks’ Place
in Simpson. From there we head
down to the trail for a walk to
our latest interpretative signage
installed this fall. The sign tells
the story of two bridges which
crossed the Lackawanna River
and the D&H Trail, connecting to
the Northwest Breaker. Along the
way we will visit other “secrets”
sites and scenic areas. The hike
will be approximately two hours
and, weather permitting, open to
snowshoe or cross country skiing.
All events begin at our office
in Union Dale unless otherwise
stated. Snowshoes are available
for loan in limited quantities. For

Mary Magdeline Podrasky, referred to by friends and family
as “Maggie” was born in Jessup on March 10, 1930 to Catherine
Cecelia and Peter Joseph Povanda. Mary lived in Jessup all her
life, prior to residing in the Forest City Nursing & Rehab Center.
Her father was employed as a mason with the Peckville Builders
and her mother was a seamstress with Barbizon, manufacturing
women’s sleepwear and lingerie. Mary and her twin sister, Rose
Mary, attended St. Michaels school in Jessup, St. Patrick’s High
School in Olyphant, and later graduated from Business College
together. Rose Mary moved to Washington DC, worked for the
CIA, and married John Mathias who later became the United
States Chief Judge of Transportation. Mary continued to live in
Jessup and began working for the Bell Telephone Company after graduation. April 6, 1953 she married, her now late husband,
Michael Podrasky. Later in life Mary became the VP of Jo Mike
Land Development Company and VP of MAPCO (Michael Anthony Podrasky) fuel, oil, and propane distributor. Both companies were founded by her late husband, who she misses and
remembers fondly daily. Mary knew Michael all of her life. Coincidently, Mary and Michael’s grandparents were next door neighbors, and Mary’s mother was certain that one of her daughters
would marry him. Michael loved education; he had two masters
degrees and was a teacher at Lakeland for many years. Mary
raised two children with Michael, Thomas Podrasky and Mary
Jayne Crotti, and they have six grandchildren. Mary was active
in the community throughout her life and belonged to many organizations, including the Slovak Heritage Society, St. Michael’s
Social Club, The Rosary Society, St. Michael’s Quilters and the
Moosic Lake Women’s Club. One of Mary’s biggest accomplishments was when she received an honorarium and was published
in the National Slovak Society Magazine. She also enjoys activities such as crocheting, painting, reading, traveling, and most
notably shopping. She was especially fond of her cat, “Cha-Cha’,
and currently loves surprise visits from her “grad-dog”, Colbert.
However, traveling had always been her biggest passion in life;
she states that she had traveled to Ireland on eight occasions, Europe 24 times, four trips through the Panama Canal, four times to
Hawaii, eight trips to Alaska, four trips to her ancestor’s homeland of Slovakia, and she sailed on various cruises on 26 separate
occasions.
