» Liberecká
its glory
The Liebig Castle was built above
Liberec in 1900–1901. After many years
of dilapidation, it was renovated in 2013 and it
now serves its original purpose. It is a trip
destination with a restaurant with a capacity
of 116 people, a 25 m high lookout tower,
a hotel and a wellness spa. Social and cultural
events, including medieval-style celebrations,
are held there.

» Inof the Scheybals
The Jana and Josef V. Scheybal Teaching
Trail bears the name of two significant local
ethnographers, whose legacy extends far
beyond the boundaries of the Liberec Region.
It is 20.5 km long and it connects to different
regions, i.e. the harsh Jizera Mountains, where
Josef V. Scheybal was born, and the Bohemian
Paradise, where his future career began.
Frýdlant Château with
» The
Albrecht von Wallenstein
The original castle which was extended
into a renaissance château in the 16th
century became the property of Albrecht
von Wallenstein after the Battle of White
Mountain. This year, Wallenstein will once
again be present on his estate within
the framework of the local celebrations.
Don’t miss an audience with the Duke
or any of the other unforgettable experiences
associated with this local lord.
Information will be available
in the Frýdlant town program.
» Cimrman in the Tanvald area
The Jára Cimrman Lighthouse and Lookout
Tower and the Museum of Cimrman’s Age,
the first official permanent museum to
this Czech genius, explorer, visionary and
adventurer is opening at the U Čápa facility
in Příchovice. A unique, all-wood, 23 m high
lookout tower rises directly from the museum
and gazes out over the Liptákov area, the area
of Cimrman’s dotage.

Journeys are like books. We just have to know how to read them.
They contain sad and happy stories, myths, fairy tales with morals,
secrets and historical facts.
You don’t believe me?
Just try going with me, for example, along the old trail to Terezínka.
The trail leads along a railway line. There used to be fertile fields there
owned by the Přádník family. When the railway was built, AustroHungary purchased the properties over which it was supposed to lead.
The people sold up, with the exception of old Přádník. They built
the line without his blessing. The old man, who had refused to give
in, called upon a greater power for assistance and when the first train
from Železný Brod to Tanvald approached, he stepped onto the rails
with a cross held high above his head …
The journey hurries on and we enter the land of fairy tales where
the enormous vocal cords of an eagle tell the ancient tale of the miraculous
golden fern flower. And the “Na Marjánce” pub used to be located in that
house. Every 19th March, the blind accordion player Václav of Popelnice
would go there and sing the song “Spring Water” (“Jarní vody”). If he had
not come and sung, spring would not have begun in Hamry.
Let us continue further. The hedge hides a monument to Josef Kouřil,
www.jizerky.cz
37, who was shot and killed there in May 1945. Every human life is like
a novel.
The first cliffs of the Muchov Ridge start above the road and there is also
a mysterious stone there with the inscription “JK 1914”. Who carved it?
What did he mean by it? Did the mysterious JK go off to war? Did he
ever return? For years now, I have been looking for the answers to these
questions in vain.
And here is Terezínka with its story of the shackled maid who guards
a cursed treasure. We are entering the world of fairy tales. A stone giant
sleeps in the cliffs behind the Piroch Villa, while devils breathe sulphur
on us at a rocky gate known locally as the “Bisected Gate” (“Rozpůlena”)
and others will await us in the cliffs below Černá studnice. But do not
hurry off in search of them. They will wait for us, so let us rather look at
the foundations of the hiking chalet under Muchov and listen to its history…
We have gone but a short way and the stories we have encountered
would be sufficient for several long winter evenings.
Journeys are like books. So, go and learn how to read them. The most
beautiful season of the year awaits you. Summer. The time of holidays
and long trips.

Who is Jetík and how did he come
to the Czech mountains?
Samolepka
Jetík comes from the family
of the well-known 70x70
Abominable Snowman, also known as the Yeti, from
the Himalayas. And because Jetík knows the Himalayas
Samoelpka
70x88mm
well, he decided
to set off and check
out other mountains.
He spun the globe, closed his eyes and stopped it with
his finger in a picturesque country in the heart of Europe,
the Czech Republic. And now he is waiting for you so that
you can play together.
One day, he set off on a long hike to find the most
wonderful places in the Czech mountains. During
his travels, he gradually discovered that the Czech
mountains are not only beautiful, but that they also
have their own history, hidden treasure, diverse nature
and also their own protectors, including pixies, fairies
and kind ghosts. So, follow in Jetík’s footsteps and
collect the stamps from the places he has visited. The
most diligent hikers will not only come across mythical
figures from our mountains, but will especially be
rewarded by Jetík himself for the kilometres they have
travelledSamoelpka
and the adventures100x126mm
they have experienced.

But Jetík is a bit of a rascal and he has hidden many
of the clues from you. As he has not left many of them
in the mountains, you will have to look for the most
important of them.
At the beginning, Jetík thought that travelling
in the mountains was fun and he ignored the basic rules
and even the advice of his friends (the ghosts, pixies
and other permanent inhabitants of the mountain area)
and he got into difficulty several times. When crossing
the Bohemian Forest, he was caught in a sudden
downpour and was soaked to the skin. When it rains
in the mountains, it also gets cold very quickly.
Shivering with cold, Jetík was really at death’s door
and he had to call for help, which luckily arrived in time
and everything turned out alright in the end.
Jetík quickly learnt from his experiences and he became
friends with the modern guardians of the mountains,
the Mountain Rescue Service. The boys in red jackets
protect him and they have taken good care of him
and of hikers for more than 70 years.
Jetík also never leaves any litter around and he always
chooses his route so as not to disturb the nature
around him and so that he can preserve the beauty
of the mountains as he sees it for other people who like
to walk in the mountains.
What are the competition rules?
Get your Jetík stamp passport ready: you can get it at
the collection points marked on the maps and in the
promotional fliers. Or you can print it out yourself from
the Jetík website at www.jetik.info. And then all
you have to do is to “follow in Jetík’s footsteps through
the Czech mountains”.
You will receive a stamp in your passport for each
of Jetík’s clues which you discover during visits to
significant sites in the mountains (marked as stamp
areas). Your reward will be an original badge which
you will receive in return for having visited seven
places. The badge which is awarded after receiving
seven, fourteen or twenty-one stamps can be picked
up in a colour corresponding to the number of stamps
acquired in the passport. You will be able to receive your
badge at the marked collection points.
During your trips to the Czech mountain ranges, you will
be sure to come across more people searching for Jetík’s
clues and you will be able to see how successful they
have been according to the colour of their badges.
Once your passport contains 21 stamps which you have
acquired in at least three different Czech mountain
locations and where none of the places are repeated,
you will be able to hand in your passport for a prize
draw. Just fill in your personal details and hand
in your passport at any of the collection sites or send it
to the following address:
Horská služba ČR, o.p.s., Ekonomické centrum,
Za potokem 46/4, Praha 10, 106 00.
Once a year, Jetík draws winners from the submitted
valid passports and rewards their owners with valuable
prizes in return for their efforts in the mountains.
If a stamp passport does not meet all of the conditions,
it will not be included in the draw.
Every collection point and stamp site has its own
opening hours (please respect this!).
Don’t forget Jetík’s advice!
Equip yourself properly for any trip and find out all
the necessary information in advance. Don’t forget
that fortune favours the prepared.

The journey on the Harrachov sightseeing train takes 1.5
hours, but this may change according to the conductor’s
requirements. The trip begins in front of the Novosad
and Son Glassworks. It includes a 20 minute break at
the Mumlava Waterfall, where there is also the option
of taking refreshments at the U Lišáka Hut. The train
then travels through the centre of Harrachov and there
is a second 10-minute break at the ski jump stands.
This offers a wonderful view of Harrachov and the large
Mammoth Ski Jump.

This year, the rack-and-pinion railway will celebrate
its 111th birthday. Our steepest railway line will once
again be travelled by special passenger trains which
will be accompanied by one of only two remaining
T426.0 rack-and.-pinion locomotives known locally as
“Austrians”. Balm passenger carriages from the 1960s,
a historic M240.056 traction vehicle known as a “Singer”
and a Balm Bistro buffet car will be included in the
trains. In the first three carriages, it will be possible
to see the train’s route broadcast from the front
of the locomotive. There will be a diverse accompanying
program on the individual operating days. If you are
interested, we have also prepared the option of securing
special trains to order, and not only on the rack-andpinion railway.
We hope that you will be able to choose from the offer
of nostalgic trips and that you will come and have a ride.
We are looking forward to seeing you!

The secret places of the Jizera Mountains
untains
The children’s day at Jizerka
5. 10. 2013 Jizerka, Sklárna
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
www.vilaizerina.cz, www.jizerky.cz
The hiking region of the Jizera Mountains has prepared
a new competition for all visitors young and old called
the Secret Places of the Jizera Mountains. Eight interesting,
mysterious and less well known places in the Jizera
Mountains have been equipped with a small, freely
accessible metal symbol. After finding all the symbols,
tracing them onto the flier and handing it in at one
of the information centres, the successful participant
will be given a gift: a glass coin from Izerína the Fairy.
The flier is available at all information centres in the Jizera
Mountains, but it can also be downloaded at www.
vilaizerina.cz, where you will also find further information.
Izerína the Fairy awoke in the heart of Bukovec and opened
her treasure trove to the children. Whoever visits eight
secret places in the Jizera Mountains will receive a coin
from Izerína. But no child can go in search for treasure and
mystery alone. They need you, mums, dads, grandmas,
• creative workshops for the whole family on the theme of Izerína the Fairy and crafts
• a meeting with the regional producers from the Jizera Mountains
• the chance to have a photo taken with Izerína the Fairy
• the opening of an exhibition of photographs of the “Landscape and People”
• the sale of regional souvenirs, the “Travels with Izerína the Fairy” book and a calendar of children’s drawing for 2014
• a certificate and small gift for everybody
granddads and whoever else may accompany them on this
journey. And you are sure to have also realised long ago
that there are many different types of treasures and wealth
in the world other than the coins of Izerína the Fairy. How
then should we tempt you to go on this journey in search of
children’s treasure? What can we offer you instead of a coin
which is only valid in the realm of fantasy? I don’t know.
I will therefore try to tell you why I went to visit these places.
I will try to tell you of my love for this corner of the
country. And believe me that when telling you the story
I will be very, very sad that my children long ago began to
walk around the mountains by themselves. Because every
journey ends with the birth of a story and I no longer have
anybody to tell it to. So, you know what? I will whisper it
to you and you can then tell it to your little ones. And I will
then, ever so slightly, be jealous of you.
Klára Hoffmanová
• the option of visiting one of the “Secret Places of the Jizera Mountains”

The Oldřichov v Hájích Eco-Camp
The Oldřichov v Hájích Eco-Centre is planning to open
a new eco-camp in June 2013. You will be able to find
the eco-camp in the north-western section of the Jizera
Mountains on the Liberec – Raspenava road.
Visitors can go camping in an attractive locality
(a former sand quarry) which is adjacent to the ecocentre. The camp’s location is an ideal starting point
for walking and cycling trips. The region includes
a number of walking and cycling tracks which lead
to the most interesting places in the Jizera Mountains
and in the Frýdlant area. It is ideal for families with
children who wish to spend their holiday together
relaxing in a quiet environment. In order to liven up
your stay, we offer a selection of entertaining-teaching
programmes which we have prepared for all age
categories. The participants in the programmes will
discover life in the fishpond, become beekeepers for
a while, try working with wool from our sheep or make
a dreamcatcher in an Indian tepee for a peaceful sleep.
If you would prefer an individual program, we
offer the interactive “Jizera Mountains through all
the Senses” natural history exhibition where you can
become acquainted with the eco-systems of the Jizera
Mountains. On the other hand, if you wish to enter
the world of insects in a fun and entertaining way,
we recommend that you visit the Bee Teaching trail.
We have not chosen the name of the eco-camp by
chance. We want to show visitors that a tourist facility
can be operated in an environmentally friendly manner.
We use renewable energy sources to heat water
and produce electrical energy. We secure the camp’s
operations using local or disadvantaged employees.
We use environmentally friendly cleaning agents and
naturally we also sort waste. Child visitors will enjoy
the small farm with a petting pen. At the farm, they
will see original farm animal breeds: goats, sheep, pigs,
chickens and horses. They will also be able to go horse
riding in the riding hall or outside in the local terrain.
We do not pretend to be a five-star camp, but we try
to offer a pleasant environment at reasonable prices.
If you are planning to spend your holidays in this
country, have a look at the www.ekokemp.cz website
where you will find up-to-date current information.
We are looking forward to your visit.

The singletrack under Smrk
It is no longer necessary to introduce the Singletrack
under Smrk to most cyclists. Many people have
already travelled down its narrow trails winding down
the slopes of the majestic and mysterious Smrk massif
and they frequently return to this addictive experience.
The infinite descents which bump and wind between
trees will manage to bring a smile to the face
of everybody, from small children up to highly physical
and technical bikers.
The Singletrack under Smrk was established as a result
of inspiration from similar projects in Great Britain and
from their fascinating atmosphere and rich community
life. It represents an interesting and highly accessible
opportunity for spending leisure time and for active
movement in the countryside for all generations
of cyclists. There is no need to worry that you cannot
manage the ride on the singletrack; just come and try
it. All you need to know is how to stay on your bike.
The tracks are best suited for mountain bikes (if you do
not have your own one, it is possible to hire one at the
Singletrack Centre). No other equipment, other than
a helmet and gloves, is necessary.
The best point for starting a trip on the Singletrack
under Smrk is the entrance point at the Singletrack
Centre which you will find in Nové Město pod Smrkem
on the beach at the outdoor swimming pool. You can
take refreshments, prepare for your trip, hire a bike
at the AGang Test Centre, purchase equipment or have
your bike serviced at the Singletrack Centre. Have
a cup of coffee and view the mountain panorama.
It is an enchanting place.
However, you won’t stay there long. A day
of unforgettable experiences awaits you. Make a final
check that you have everything and then jump
in the saddle. Follow the wide, green-marked trail
from the Singletrack Centre and then just choose which
circuit you want to travel. The trails have four degrees
of difficulty which are colour coded in the terrain. Green
is for complete beginners, small children, walkers with
prams or people in wheelchairs. Blue is for intermediate
riders, red is for upper intermediate riders and black
is for skilled bikers.
Don’t miss the calm romantic trip along the blue
and red trails to the peaceful Jindřichovice Ridge
or the constantly undulating red descents above
the Giant Barrel and Kyselka. If you are an experienced
terrain cyclist, take the beautiful and mystical
Měděnka bypass which is shrouded in history along
the black-marked trail to the deserted steep slopes
of the Czerniawsky Valley in Poland, while even
the demanding, dramatic circuit to the Hejnice Ridge
undulates among the cliffs.
It is practically impossible to master all of the trails
in the Singletrack under Smrk in a single day. However,
the trails have been designed in order to enable
the planning of longer and shorter circuits. The staff
at the Singletrack centre will help you with the choice
and planning of your route.
Once you have completed your ride, it is time to relax.
Have a good meal and a shower at the Singletrack
Centre. You can also wash down your bike there. It is also
possible to take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool
during good weather. Then there is nothing better than
to just sit on the terrace, take in the scenery and watch
the surrounding hills which you have visited.
Have we tempted you into making the trip? It isn’t
necessary to wait for cloudless skies or for summer
temperatures. The singletrack is also great fun in cooler
and wet weather, when there are usually less people
on the tracks and the countryside takes on many new
captivating aspects. Just make sure that you dress
warmly. Even during warm weather, we recommend
that you take a light windbreaker in your backpack
(the weather in the mountains can change quickly
and unexpectedly). Experience has also shown that it is
a good idea to have a change of socks, basic tools and
a spare inner tube or adhesive patches for basic repairs
with you on the tracks. It is important to take a drink
or a small snack. If you forget to bring anything from
home, you can buy supplies at the Singletrack Centre.

A bicycle tour through the local history
Smržovka – Jiřetín pod Bukovou – Josefův Důl
– Mariánskohorské Boudy – the Breached Dam
(Protržená přehrada) – Jizerka – the Jizera Valley
– Martinské Údolí – Kořenov, the railway station.
A total of ca 30 km. A relatively demanding route
with significant climbs and several difficult descents.
This cycle trip offers you an opportunity to visit several
local museums. It begins in Smržovka (the Museum
of Local History, Armoured Technology). Start at the
T.G. Masaryk Square (náměstí T.G. Masaryka) and head
along the secondary road in the direction of Horní
Tanvald. You will pass under the railway viaduct
(a technical monument) and then turn left onto a local
road before you arrive at the Kamenice River. This will
take you to Jiřetín pod Bukovou (the Area Museum).
Continue through the Kamenice Valley along the
road which leads through Albrechtice v Jizerských
horách to Josefův Důl (the Museum of Local History).
The glassmaking past of this region is visible in
a number of places, but the two glassworks in Josefův
Důl are now inactive. The Church of the Transformation
of Our Lord dating from 1862–1865 is worth a visit;
there is a memorial to the writer Gustav Leutelt, who
was born and wrote there, nearby.
Head to Mariánskohorské Boudy from Josefův Důl.
The forest asphalt trail will initially lead you along
the small Jedlová River, but it later turns right and
begins to climb more steeply. The former pastoral
and woodcutting enclave of Mariánskohorské Boudy
has a history stretching back over more than three
hundred years, but today it consists of just four
cottages. You can then easily descend to the Breached
Dam (Protržená přehrada) (a cultural monument,
a learning trail). The embankment dam of the reservoir
on the White Desná was breached in 1916.
The next section of the route up to Jizerka is the most
demanding; this entire section includes steep
climbs and descents. You will reach the road in the
Black Desná Valley and you should then head left
before turning off it to the right shortly afterwards.
This is followed by a relatively long climb ending
at the ridge known as Vlašský hřebeň. From its
peak, you will descend to a track known as the
Promenade (Promenáda) and then continue to Jizerka
(the Museum of the Jizera Mountains).
A Tip Trip
The final section of this cycle trip leads past Bukovec
and then includes a long descent to the Jizera Valley.
The railway viaduct arching over the river is also
an interesting testament to the technical skills of our
ancestors. You will reach the road in the settlement
of Martinské Údolí and it will soon begin to ascend to
the railway station in Kořenov (the Cog Railway Museum).
You can then return to your starting point by train.
It is also possible to take an easier route from Jizerka
to Kořenov, if you go to Horní Polubný, from where
you can descend to the railway station.

Mountaineering in the Jizera Mountains
The Jizera Mountains include several climbing sectors
which conceal interesting places for classic climbing
with various degrees of difficulty.
The climbing here is on rock plates (the climbing
is on moderately positioned walls using crystals
in the granite), but there are also numerous fissures
and chimneys where the climbing involves the use
of opposing pressure. As well as that, the Jizera
Mountains also include a lot of wall climbing
and overhangs, so that there is truly something
for everybody.
Climbers who know the conditions often say that you
“climb on blood” in the Jizera Mountains. This is because
of the coarse-grained Jizera Mountain granite which
Our tips:
Tip no. 1
The Paličník area, Paličník – routes suitable
for beginners and more advanced climbers
A well-known cliff-top lookout located
on the yellow-marked trail from Bílý Potok.
This characteristic cliff is not the highest point
in the Klínový vrch, as will become apparent with
the view from Bílý Potok. This lookout point is not
only a popular destination for hikers, but a number
of climbing trails also lead to it. The Kohoutí hřeben
ridge, which descends into the valley under Paličník,
is also worthy of attention and it is a popular
destination for mountaineers.
Tip no. 2
The Srázy area – Poledník, Zvon – the most
beautiful mountaineering tower
This mountaineering tower is a symbol for all the
mountaineers in the Jizera Mountains. Its walls reach
a height of up to twenty metres and they include
ROCKTRIP Brief rules for climbing in the Jizera Mountains
climbing adventure
fissures, overhangs, rock plates and wall climbs. It is
not easy to climb this tower. We recommend that you
have some climbing experience. The route to Zvon
leads from the Oldřichov Saddle, from Koza, along
the Winemaking Trail. After about 25 minutes’ walk,
a narrow climbing trail turns off steeply up the slope
to the right and then winds directly under the cliff
tower. There is a symbolic ice axe with the initials
of the first individuals to ascend it at the top of Zvon.
Tip no. 3
The Small and Large Štolpich area,
Divá Maří – the most significant tower
in the Jizera Mountains
Divá Maří is one of the most significant towers in the
Jizera Mountains due to the fact that it was the first
to be ascended by a person (in 1895). Its massive
valley wall rises distinctly above the Large Štolpich
Valley. You can get to Divá Maří from the track
through the Štolpich Valley around the Cave Tower.
Tip no. 4
The Polední kameny area, Hlídač, Nos
– the most demanding climb
The dominant feature of the Černý potok Valley.
The wall falling to its waterfalls is approximately
50 metres high. The ascent up the valley wall is one
of the most beautiful ascents in the Jizera Mountains,
but by no means one of the simplest. The wall
is relatively well secured with rings and there is
the partial option of using your own harnesses.
The reward for the ascent is an unforgettable view
towards Hejnice and Bílý potok.
You can get to this wall along the green-marked Goat
Trail up to the yellow turn-off to Frýdlantské cimbuří.
There, head right via Černý potok under the massive
Nos wall.
The basic information has been taken from the Jizera
Mountains Mountaineering Guide, P. Fajgl, O. Simm,
M. Vrkoslav, 2010, with additions from Mgr. Ondřej
Šnopl (Rocktrip) and Mgr. Jiří Hušek jnr. (the Jizera
Mountains Nature Reserve Administration).
8
is very hard and sharp in comparison with classic
sandstone and often deals climbers a few injuries.
Most of the climbing locations in the Jizera Mountains
belong to the Jizera Mountains Beech Wood Nature
Reserve. Admittance to them is not permitted and
it is also explicitly forbidden by law to climb there.
The Nature Reserve Administration has, however, set
aside sufficient cliff areas where climbing is permitted,
albeit under the condition of the adherence to strict
conditions. Anybody who wants to try the specific local
climbing will be rewarded with views of the beautiful
landscape which are so unique that they are worth
a few grazes; especially in spring and in autumn when
the local landscape has an unmistakable magic.
1. Climbers only overcome gravity by means of their
own strength.
2. Climbers only use natural rises and holds and only
use artificial aids to secure themselves.
3. Climbers are obliged to only use hiking tracks or
trails which have been marked with the approval
of the nature protection authority to access the cliffs.
4. When ascending and descending, climbers
are obliged to proceed in such a way so as to limit
any damage to the rock surface to the absolute
minimum.
5. It is prohibited to alter the rock surface (modifying
and creating holds and so on)
6. It is prohibited to use magnesium or any other
chemical agents.
7. In their own interests, climbers will pay attention
to the safety rules during the ascent and will adhere
to the principles of proper anchoring.
8. Climbing only with top anchoring (or with the
designation of a limited number of members in
a rope team ascending behind the first climber
with top anchoring) is prohibited.
9. Adding additional permanent anchoring
to the existing routes is prohibited.
10. Climbers are obliged to behave in a manner which
does not lead to the pollution of the natural
environment with waste and does not disturb
bird’s nests during the ascent. If they discover any
nesting on the route of the ascent, they are obliged
to abandon the ascent and to inform the nature
protection bodies of the nesting site.
The detailed climbing rules can be found in the area of the
Jizera Mountains online at www.horosvaz.cz
Important notification: the Jizera Mountains
Nature Reserve Administration expects that
climbers will behave with the utmost consideration
for the environment (consisting of living and mineral
elements) when climbing, i.e. that they will especially
adhere to the appropriate provisions of the Nature
and Landscape Protection Act. Not all of these
prohibitions have been stated in the conditions,
because they are directly stated in the Act or further
arise from its provisions. It is therefore expected that
the ban on bivouacking and starting fires will be
adhered to, amongst other things. You will find the full
wording of the decision on the Czech Mountaineering
Association’s website.

tips for
The Ridge Project
The long awaited cross-border Ridge Project which
will connect attractive areas in the upper reaches
of the mountains from the Jizera Mountains to the Zittau
Mountains is about to be realised. The public can
look forward to the marking of three parallel routes
(for hikers, cyclists and skiers) which will satisfy
every visitor. The routes have been carefully selected
so that they best correspond to the character of the
individual activities and so that they lead both through
well-known areas of the Czech-German border area
and through places which are admittedly of interest,
but are as yet not very frequented. The project will be
specifically realised in the territory of the Liberec Region
and in the Landkreis Görlitz in neighbouring Germany.
The Ridge Trail will include the territory of the Liberec
Region (specifically the hiking regions of the Jizera
Mountains and the Česká Lípa area), while the German
partner on the other side of the border is the Landkreis
Görlitz. The three parallel trails, which will be marked,
will connect highly attractive sites in the upper reaches
of the Jizera, Lusatian and Zittau Mountains and the
Černá Studnice and Ještěd-Kozákov Ridges. The route
will be marked with 185 signposts with directional
signs, 51 outdoor maps, 24 wooden benches, 9 bike
stands and 9 shelters. 5 rest areas with a children’s
playground will also be built and they will offer visitors
a place to rest and relax after completing some of the
more demanding sections of the trip. The rest areas will
be built in Mařenice, Milíře, Smržovka, Hrádek nad Nisou
and Mníšek u Liberce.
The northern and southern branches of the trail both
begin in the Jizerka settlement in the Jizera Mountains.
The northern route continues through the upper reaches
of the Jizera Mountains, including Smědava, Sněžná
věžičky, Ptačí kupy and Poledník. Around Oldřichov
v Hájích, the trail continues up to Albrechtice u Frýdlantu,
The history of the Czech Hiking Club
Václavice and Hrádek nad Nisou. It then crosses the state
border in Hartau and continues on the German side
along the lake known as the Obersdorfer See and the
Mandau River to Oybin, to the top of Hochwald (“Hvozd”
in Czech), through which the Czech-German state border
passes, and on to Jonsdorf. The trail once again returns
to the Czech side via the Dolní Podluží/Waltersdorf border
crossing point and it ends at Nová Huť at the border with
the Ústí Region.
The southern route leads from Jizerka along the Souš
Reservoir through Desná, Tanvald, the Černá Studnice
Ridge and Jablonec nad Nisou to Milíř and it then
continues via the Ještěd Ridge to Ještěd. The points
of interest on the trail include, for example, the White
(Elephant) Stones at Jitrava. The hiking trail also takes
visitors to Petrovice and ends at the Czech-German
border in Lückendorf. However, the cycle trail will take
you back to the border with the Ústí Region via Mařenice
and Horní and Dolní Světlá.
The project will include marketing activities in the form
of the www.hrebenovka.cz web portal which will
offer visitors more detailed information about all three
routes and further options for hiking, cycling and crosscountry skiing within the framework of this project.
The website will especially contain the history of the
project, an interactive map of the Ridge Trail, the points
of interest on the trail, tips for trips, tourism services
on the trail and in the environs of the Ridge Trail, photo
galleries, web cameras and so on. The website will be
connected to the data warehouse of tourism information
for the Liberec Region. Other activities include maps, tips
for trips and a roving exhibition.
The project has been financed from Program
Target 3/Ziel 3 for the support of cross-border
cooperation 2007-2013 between the Czech Republic
and the Free State of Saxony.

10
trips
In the past, hiking trips were organised by many
Czech and German associations. The first Czech
hiking organisation, “Pohorská jednota Radhošť” was
established in 1884 and it was active for a number
of years, albeit only in its own region. A number
of such hiking associations were gradually established
in the area of the Beskid Mountains. However, a national
organisation was established in 1888 and it eventually
became one of the largest hiking organisations
in Austro-Hungary.
The Czech Hiking Club was established on 11. 6. 1888
in Prague, in the small hall of the “Měšťanská beseda”
building, at the initiative of a number of enthusiasts
led by Dr. Vilém Kurz the elder (the Chairman
of the Bohemian Forest National Association), Dr. František
Čížek (the Chairman of the North Bohemian National
Association) and the architect Vratislav Pasovský. The wellknown explorer and public officer Vojtěch Náprstek was
elected as the chairman of the new hiking organisation.
He performed the role of a well-known personality
at the head of the club, devoted himself to working
in the club for a short time and then resigned from
his position as chairman six months later during the first
general meeting of the Czech Hiking Club in January 1889.
At that time, he had a number of other interests, functions
and obligations and as such the weight of the club’s work
soon passed to a group of individuals concentrated around
Kurz and Pasovský (a plaque bearing his name is now
the Czech Hiking Club’s highest award). Jaroslav Zdeněk
was elected as the second club chairman in January
1889, while the architect Vratislav Pasovský was elected
as the third chairman in 1890 and he remained in the post
for 25 years.
Numerous branches of the club established chalets
and huts and built lookout towers (for example,
the Petřín lookout tower in Prague and the Kurz lookout
tower on Čerchov Peak). They also began to create
a dense network of marked hiking tracks in 1889.
The first edition of the Hikers Magazine (Časopis turistů)
was published in January 1889. At that time, it was
edited by Professor Dr. Vilém Kurz. The magazine is still
published as a monthly magazine today.
After the establishment of the independent
Czechoslovakia in 1918, the club was transformed
into the Czechoslovak Hiking Club after a merger with
Slovak hiking organisations. It expanded its activities
and became a significant leisure time organisation.
After the loss of the Sudetenland and the separation
and establishment of a Slovak state in 1939, the club
partially renewed its existence in the territory
of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, but under
the original name of the Czech Hiking Club.
After the Communists came into power in February 1948,
the Czech Hiking Club was broken up and disbanded,
its property was nationalised and its membership
base was incorporated into the uniform sport program
by means of merger meetings in the coming months.
Hiking activities mainly moved under the auspices
of the hiking departments at the Czechoslovak Physical
Education Association. The club was not renewed until
after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. However, some clubs
(for example in Volyně) did not renew their pre-1948
activities for various reasons.
After 1990, the reinstated club worked to have its
property returned. It was partially successful, but it then
subsequently lost some of the reacquired buildings.
The trailblazers are the most important and significant
part of the Czech Hiking Club. They are volunteers who
spend their leisure time maintaining the hiking track
markings and direction signs or marking out new tracks.
They also maintain the equipment used to inform hikers:
the stands holding maps, the direction signs and so on.
New tracks are especially being established in the areas
of former military training areas which are gradually
being opened up. At present, the trailblazers in the
Czech Republic maintain 41,500 km of marked trails,
i.e. more or less the same amount as in 1939, but now
without Carpathian Ruthenia and Slovakia. This clearly
shows how dense the hiking track network has become

tips for
trips
The Cliff-top lookouts of the Frýdlant area
The north of the Jizera Mountains
The Jizera Mountains have several different faces:
they appear differently when viewed from the south
or southwest and quite differently again when viewed
from the north, while their mountain plateau is also
distinctive. They rise relatively gently from the south,
while to the north they fall steeply and wildly. Visitors
to the Frýdlant or Nové Město areas are well aware of
this. If they look to the mountains, they are confronted
by a dark rampart of forested mountains which is furrowed
by the deep ravines of streams and above which peaks
crowned with cliff-top lookouts protrude.
There is a whole series of cliffs with views there, but we
will only mention the most interesting ones here. If you
view the mountains from Hejnice, you will be sure to see
three of them: Paličník, Frýdlantské cimbuří and Ořešník.
They form a kind of triangle, on whose rocky faces large
wooden crosses stand. Father Miloš Raban of Hejnice
had the idea of erecting the crosses on the three peaks
at the beginning of the 1990s. Whereas there has been
a cross on Ořešník since time immemorial, new crosses
were erected on the other two peaks.
A number of streams flow to the north from the plateau
of the Jizera Mountains and they eventually merge
with the Smědá River. Before doing so however, they
have to overcome a significant height difference. Some
of them form waterfalls which have attracted romantics
and artists since the beginnings of hiking.
The attractive scenery of the northern part of the Jizera
Mountains also welcomes you. So please accept our
invitation to take a walk around the cliff-top lookout
points which not only offer distant views, but also
a number of quaint folk legends. And whoever does
not enjoy heights, can set off through the shady forests
to the waterfalls on the mountain streams. The slight
exertions necessary during the ascent will certainly
be well worth it.
Paličník (944 m)
Not many of the Jizera Mountain peaks can compete
with Paličník in a notional beauty contest. Its graceful
shape with a rocky crown on its head stands out best
when viewed from Bílý Potok or from the road above
Lázně Libverda. Paličník towers above the deep valleys
of the Smědá River and the Hájený Stream.
The Paličník lookout point is, however, only ostensibly
a peak. It is located on the flank of the Klínový vrch peak,
whose highest point is avoided by the marked hiking
trails. Despite this, Paličník is the unequivocal dominant
feature in this area. This was noticed by visitors to Hejnice
or Libverda in ancient times and Paličník became
an increasingly frequent destination for the outings.
It was perhaps for this reason, that the members
of the Giant Mountains Association equipped the rock
with short ladders, a metal handrail and a footbridge
crossing a deep chasm in 1902. A massive wooden cross
has also stood on Paličník since 1992. It was erected
at the instigation of Father Miloš Raban.
We recommend that visitors should choose a day with
good visibility for a trip to Paličník, because the view
from there is also truly magnificent. The rounded
ridges of the Giant Mountains arch on one side, while
on the other side the wide Smědá River stretches
out below with the Frýdlant Château at one end
and the neighbouring Lusatian Mountains in the
distance. On the southern side, everything is framed
by the northern edge of the Jizera Mountains.
It is possible to set out for Paličník both from Bílý Potok
around the Bártl Hut or from the Smědava Chalet.
The ascent from the Bártl Hut is particularly demanding
in the second section.
Frýdlantské cimbuří (875 m)
and Polední kameny (1006 m)
The Polední kameny Ridge arises steeply from
the meadows above Bílý Potok. The very first glimpse
upon arriving in Hejnice shows that the ridge is literally
strewn with rocks, the highest of which protrudes
from green beech forests. The long ridge is divided
into two parts: the Upper and Lower Polední kameny,
while the lower part culminates at Frýdlantské cimbuří.
This consists of two sturdy cliffs. The higher of them,
the western one, is a lookout point which is accessible
to hikers from the saddle between them. If you want
to climb up to the highest block with the handrail
and the cross, it is necessary to cross a metal horizontal
ladder. The eastern cliff is only accessible to mountaineers
and it was they who named it after the first ascent
in 1912. Later, the name of Frýdlantské cimbuří was also
assigned to the neighbouring hiking summit.
Whoever decides to continue from there to the top
of Polední kameny, will pass by an entire range of cliffs.
Some of them have been given names, such as Půlený
kámen (Halved Stone), Drbny (Gossips) or Emilova
věž (Emil’s Tower). Even though both places are not
far from one another, the view from each of them
is quite different. Whereas it is possible to admire
the deep Černý potok valley and the adjacent cliff wall
called Nos (the Nose) from Frýdlantské cimbuří, it is
possible to see the mountain plateau with its peaks
from Polední kameny and the picturesque Frýdlant area
stretches out to the north.
The ascent to Frýdlantské cimbuří and the top of Polední
kameny may form part of the continuation of the trip
to Hajní kostel. It is, however, necessary to reckon with
a significant climb.
Krásná Maří (904 m)
This cliff-top lookout point is currently located
on a highly frequented forest track which connects
the Hřebínek intersection with the Štolpich Trail
and Smědava. Many cyclists use it in summer and it
will therefore be better to conform to this trend and
to set off for Krásná Maří by bicycle. Smědava can also
be the starting point.
In the distant past, ore was mined in the Jizera Mountains
and there were pits in the Velký Štolpich Valley.
The cluttered remains of one of them (Rudná jáma)
can be found on the Štolpich Trail, near Ferdinandov.
And there is a cliff-top lookout above this place which
has inherited its name from one of the mine works.
The lookout point was made accessible at the turn
of the 19th and 20th centuries by means of a number
of carved steps and a safe handrail. This work was realised
by the members of the German Mountain Association
for the Ještěd and Jizera Mountains.
The lookout opens up a wonderful view not only into
the depths, but also into the distance. The wildest
drops to the Štolpich Ravine are directly beneath
the lookout. One of the highest Jizera Mountains cliffs,
Divá Máří, is also located in completely impassable
terrain. This tower is connected with the beginnings
of mountaineering in the Jizera Mountains: the first
brave climbers climbed it in 1895. The sunny and rocky
Zahradní stráň (Garden Slope) which culminates in
Ořešník is located on the other side. The peaks of Upper
Lusatia, including Landeskrone and Kottmar, or the
peaks near Bautzen and Löbau are visible in the distance.
Ořešník (800 m)
Hajní kostel (710 m)
A lookout point with the romantic name of Hajní kostel
(the Gamekeeper’s Church) is located at the lower end
of the Polední kameny Ridge. It is accessible along
a short track which turns off from the trail which
ascends the steep Černý potok Valley. The approach
to the cliff is along the valley wall which includes
a geological point of interest. The entire rock is
underpinned by a massive layer of fine-grained rock
material called aplite. On the upland side, there is a short
ladder which provides easy access to the expansive body
of the cliff-top lookout.
When viewing the Frýdlant area, you may wonder about
the origins of the somewhat strange name born by
these cliffs. It is probably associated with a folk legend
about a destroyed church which was supposed to
have stood there. However, the rock bowls which exist
on the peak of Hajní kostel have also given rise to tales
of pagan rituals.
Another legend tells a story which also includes
many other places. It involves a treasure hidden inside
the cliffs which only open once a year, in the night
between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. There was
also a woman who was supposedly walking by with
her child in her arms at that time. As soon as she saw
the treasure, she tried to bring as much of it as possible
out of the cliff, but when she tried to return for her child,
the entrance had closed. Things ended well, however,
as the woman found her child alive and well in the same
place one year later.
It is possible to set off for Hajní kostel from the Bílý Potok
railway station. It is possible to continue from there
to Frýdlantské cimbuří.
If you pass through Hejnice in the direction of the Church
of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, you will be sure
to notice the striking Ořešník peak which rises directly
between the spire domes of the church. It has been
seen by pilgrims coming to view the Hejnice Madonna
since time immemorial. Maybe that is why somebody
(possibly one of the local Franciscans) erected a cross
on its peak which is clearly visible from far away.
From that time onwards, there was always somebody
to repair or replace the occassionally mouldering cross.
The last of these crosses was erected in 1991.
The rocky face of Ořešník which protrudes high above
the beech forests continues to attract increasing
numbers of visitors. However, this rocky peak was more
or less inaccessible. For this reason, the members of
the German Mountain Association decided to open
it up to hikers. They had 28 comfortable steps carved
into the granite in 1898 and secured the lookout area
with a handrail. A guide from the beginning of the 20th
century states that up to twenty people can squeeze into
the lookout area. But never fear: you won’t come across
so many people there these days.
The view from Ořešník is exceptionally impressive.
The Velký Štolpich hisses in the depths below the
lookout and the Smědá Valley dominated by the Hejnice
Basilica stretches out nearby. The majestic Mount
Smrk arches in the northeast, Paličník is beneath it and
Smědavská hora and the Polední kameny Ridge are

Liberecká výšina is open once again
and newly renovated
The dominant lookout tower and restaurant reminiscent
of a knight’s castle known as Liberecká výšina has
attracted attention in the forests above Lidové sady in
Liberec since 1901. After many years of disrepair, it has
undergone remarkable reconstruction work and it can
once again be considered to be the pride of Liberec.
Liberecká výšina – an excursion inn with a lookout
tower – was built on the slope of Kovářův Kámen
(557 m above sea level), formerly known as Hradní vrch,
in 1901 according to the design of the watchtower at
the old castle in Nuremburg by the textile factory owner,
Baron Heinrich Liebieg. The building was designed by
the Nuremburg architect, Professor Josef Schmitze, who
used some original materials from demolished medieval
houses and a church also from Nuremburg.

The building’s historical features have been able to
be preserved thanks to the completed extensive
reconstruction. The 25 metre high, pentagonal lookout
tower and the restaurant, whose interior is decorated
with historical photographs and texts, have both
been repaired. As well as the restaurant, guests can
also use the accommodation and wellness services.
The cellars and the artificial moat and bridge have also
been renovated and the original small lake has been
discovered under a large dump. As in the past, it is
possible to get to the Liberecká výšina on foot, on crosscountry skis, by bicycle in summer and even by car.
Be sure to visit this hiking destination with a beautiful
view of the region’s capital city. We are looking forward
to your visit.
www.liberecka-vysina.cz
The gods of Olympus were looking for a new home
and they broke camp on the bank of clean river.
Their weary leader, the oldest of the gods, lay down
with his face to the land and spreading his arms said:
“Dwell in this land, it abounds with sufficient ambrosia
and nectar, search further … even f…”. As he
said the last word, he turned to stone and became
a mountain. The others named the mountain after
his final utterance (translator’s note: “even further” =
“ještě dál” in Czech) and they built their dwelling there.
The name Ještěd has remained for centuries.
The god-mountain dispenses its spiritual energy
to everybody. It flows from the arms of Ještěd to the souls
of the inhabitants on the southern and northern sides
of the mountain and people search for inspiration
and strength in it. Whoever looks at the mountain will
fall speechless at its beauty. The small Ještěd range,
abundant in coloured rocks and dense forests full of game
and birdlife, became famous throughout the entire
Roman Empire because of the sacrifice of Saint Zdislava
in the thirteenth century. In the seventeenth century,
the Jesuit Bohuslav Balbín, unloved by the Pope, brought
the mountain glory in the seventeenth century. Then
along came Karolina Světlá with her five novels and six
short stories. And she was followed by the Baroness
von Herzogenberg. Others included the sportsmen
Miroslav Tyrš, Vojtěch Náprstek or even Václav Šamánek,
all of whom popularised the wonder of Ještěd.
In the end, Karel Hubáček consummated its renown
with his silver hyperboloid.
Nowadays, the spirit of Ještěd is perceived by hundred
of thousands of visitors and people from the region
are proud of the fact that they are ruled over by such
a majestic mountain. This year, the Liberec Region
will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the structure
on 21st September. You, however, can bow and pay
your respects to this wonderful mountain at any
time. A deep experience awaits you, no matter
what the weather or hour.

The Jablonec nad Nisou Toy Museum The swimming pool in Jablonec nad Nisou
A description of the exhibition: The Toy Museum in Jab
during summer
lonec nad Nisou was established as a result of the passion
for collecting and great enthusiasm of its owner, Mr Jiří
Vavřín, who decided to create and open the museum
with the help of his family and friends in 2012.
The toys on display, predominantly from the period
of 1940-1989, will be well remembered by our
parents and grandparents. They can take a trip back to
their childhood here, while their children will be able
to discover how their fathers, mothers, grandfathers and
grandmothers used to play and which toys adorned their
rooms. It would also be a great shame not to recall the
skill of the people who participated in creating the toys.
The collection is designed both for boys, who will be inte-
rested in the model cars, trains and buildings sets, and girls
who will find dolls, prams and cute playrooms here. One of
the four rooms has been set up as an old school classroom
with textbooks and teaching aids from the period pre-1950.
Try sitting in the school desks of our grandmothers and
grandfathers and play at being at school in their day.
You do not have to leave the museum empty-handed.
You can buy a small souvenir, a Czech toy or a product
labelled as a “Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains”.
We look forward to your visit.

Museums in the Frýdlant Area
Why do we visit museums? We want to become
acquainted with local history, we are interested in stories
and we like to find out something new about the place
where we are living or which we have visited. After all,
every place conceals a number of layers and museums
preserve memories. In recent years, a number of new
small exhibitions have been established in private
buildings, whose history and collected exhibitions
are worth visiting, in the Frýdlant area in addition to
the “well-established” town museums. There is also
a completely new exhibition of the history of the town
of Frýdlant in the renovated Hospital (Špitálka), while
the Lunaria Association also offers new programs
in the reconstructed building of a typical Upper Lusatian
house. Visitors will find a new brochure containing
a guide to the museums and exhibitions in the Frýdlant
area at the information centres. As such, visitors can plan
a visit to the Upper Lusatian houses of the Frýdlant area,
where there are several museums of traditional rural
life, or to see technical monuments, such as the narrow
gauge railway to Frýdlant or the historical industrial
machines and aviation motors at Bílý Potok.

visitors to the Frýdlant area will be able to follow
the story of a young messenger of Duke Albrecht
von Wallenstein who has to carry out a number
of secret missions in the Duke’s territory, terra felix
(the Happy Land), and at the same is looking
for the answers to a question which haunts him.
The Frýdlant Microregion will issue an independent
guide for the program.
All of the information on the museums in the Frýdlant
area and the program offers will also be included
on a new website at www.muzea-frydlantsko.cz.
The quest program has been established
for the network of museums in the Frýdlant area
in order to ensure that a visit to the museum is not
only a trip in search of new information, but also
an experience and an adventure. What is quest? It is
a search for treasure which the treasure hunters must
find from a number of clues and riddles. Quests were
first created in English-speaking countries and they
have become a widespread method of getting
to know an area in a number of places in England
and the United States. From the summer holidays,
The Frýdlant
Tourist Pass
This year, the Town of Frýdlant has prepared a special
treat for tourists, visitors and the town’s inhabitants
alike in the form of a so-called Frýdlant Tourist Pass.
This is available free of charge in three language versions
at the Town Information Centre in Frýdlant, but also
at the surrounding tourist information centres.
The Pass will take you around the most significant sights
in the Frýdlant region within the framework of a stamp
collecting game, it will briefly present the history
and the present of the visited places and it even contains
a small event calendar with all of the events which are
regularly held in Frýdlant and are well worth attending.
So be sure to pick up your passes, get to know
the Frýdlant area and start collecting the stamps!

much more than many books of learning”.
A quote from J. A. Comenius
The Bee Learning Trail was opened in Harrachov with
the participation of Count Jan Nepomuk František
of Harrach and his wife Marie Markéta on 8. 7. 2012.
The trail begins behind the bridge at the Harrachov
bus station, where it then continues in the direction
of the Harrachov suburb called Rýžoviště. There are
a total of 11 stations on the trail where visitors will not
only learn interesting information about the life of bees,
but will also see beehives ranging from the oldest
to the newest types which are all inhabited by bees.
Two of the hives are glazed so that it is possible to see
the busy bees at work. The trail mainly leads through
the Rýžoviště Valley along the Ryzí Stream where
visitors can refresh their tired feet in the water or sit
on a bench in the shade of the pines trees and listen
to the bees buzzing and the burbling of the stream.
Moreover, all of the stations are decorated with Giant
Mountain flowers so that the trail truly does make
use of all the senses. The highest place on the trail is
the station which has been dedicated to the patron saint
of all beekeepers, Saint Ambrose. Visitors are not only
rewarded with a few of the Rýžoviště Valley in return
for the ascent, but they can also share their feelings
and impressions in the visitors’ book, which is located
directly on Saint Ambrose’s cross.
At the very end of the trail, i.e. at the Renata
Guesthouse, visitors are tested with a question from
the life of bees. After correctly answering the question,
they will be rewarded with a Count Jan Harrach Bee
Learning Trail stamp.
Curious visitors can extend their knowledge of bees
by talking with the experienced beekeeper, Jaroslav
Čech. It was precisely his idea and enthusiasm which
led to the trail being established. Naturally, a number
of other clever and hard-working volunteers were also
required. The result of several weeks of their work is truly
impressive. People interested in an expert commentary
can contact Mr Čech by telephone on 724 015 209.
A number of new features which will further improve
the trail are also being prepared for visitors this year.
The trail is ca 3.5 km long. The trail from the bus
station to the Forest Nook leads along an asphalt road
where there is minimum car traffic and it then turns
to the right where it connects with a trail in natural
terrain with an ascent which may be slightly demanding
for some people.
Come to Harrachov to see for yourself that there is
something to Lucius Annaeus Seneca’s quote:
„If you live in communion with nature, you will
never be poor. If you live according to the opinions
of people, you will never be rich.“

In search of Cimrman in the Tanvald area
What has the Tanvald area prepared for this season?
The Wild Ride along the Jára Cimrman Cycle Trail
on 8. 6. 2013 will kick everything off. Cimrman’s legacy
can be traced from Zlatá Olešnice through Tanvald up to
Příchovice. The pilgrimage in the footsteps of this genius
can be completed with an ascent to the top of a new
lookout tower, the Jára Cimrman Lighthouse or a visit
to the Museum of the Age of Cimrman at the U Čápa
facility in Příchovice.
The first official permanent museum to this Czech genius,
the Museum of the Age of Cimrman, offers exhibits which
have been “Found in Liptákov” by the local inhabitants.
This permanent exhibition has been established directly
in the Jára Cimrman Lighthouse and it recalls his activities
in this region. There is also a room which recalls Cimrman’s
acts of discovery, heroism, research and vision and his
other significant activities. A unique, all wooden 23 m high
lookout tower with views of the Liptákov area, the region
of Cimrman’s dotage, rises directly from the museum.
This original wooden lookout tower designed
by the architect Professor Martin Rajniš is a new yearround attraction for the hiking area. The lookout tower
is 23.7 m high, including the mast, but 19.2 m high
at the roof. The lookout tower is at a height of 16.9 m
and the lookout tower’s diameter is 3.4 m.
A map of the “Region of Jára Cimrman” was published
upon the occasion of the opening of the Jára Cimrman
Lighthouse. A teaching trail for children was also
presented at the same time.

Fragile Beauty 2013
The largest exhibition of Czech glass and costume
jewellery will take place at the Eurocentrum
in Jablonec nad Nisou from 8th to 11th August. It will be
accompanied by displays of selected glass and costume
jewellery finishing techniques, fashion shows and
a cultural program.
22
The Fragile Beauty exhibition was inspired by
the tradition of large costume jewellery exhibitions
which were held in Jablonec nad Nisou prior
to the Velvet Revolution. Last year’s “zero” year
of the exhibition which was organised by the Liberec
Region within the framework of its “Fragile Beauty,
Polished Taste” media campaign was also successful.
The event attracted several thousand visitors
to the Jablonec exhibition centre.
This year’s organisers are the Association of Glass
and Costume Jewellery Producers and its Polish partner,
Powiat Jeleniogórski. The exhibition will include stands
from several tens of contemporary companies involved
in preserving traditional Jizera Mountain crafts. There will
be presentations of various techniques for working with
glass, costume jewellery and ceramics every day. “Visitors
can look forward to glass blowing, the pressing of glass
figures, glass cutting, engraving and underpainting
and the production of blown figures or black
costume jewellery”, said Pavel Kopáček, the chairman
of the organising committee. Contemporary glass
artists from the region will also participate at the event,
where they will exhibit selected pieces in the small hall
at the Eurocentrum. Musical and theatrical performances
by artists from the Czech and Polish sides of the Jizera
Mountains will also take place in the exhibition centre’s
amphitheatre. Beauties in clothing and costume jewellery
creations from the Made in Jablonec 2013 fashion show
will walk the catwalk.
The exhibition will be held from Thursday 8th to Sunday
11th of August. Entrance will be free of charge.
The detailed program can be found on the website
of the Association of Glass and Costume Jewellery
Producers – www.svbi.cz.

The Jana and Josef V. Scheybal
Centre enters the tourist season
with a new exhibition
The monument dedicated to the lives and work of
Jana and Josef Scheybal invites visitors to come and
see a new exhibition. It has been open in the attic area
of the building at Kostelní ul. 1 in Jablonec nad Nisou
since 23rd May 2013.
As well as the landscapes and documentary paintings
of J. V. Scheybal, visitors will also become acquainted
with a wide range of this significant ethnographer’s
activities through a number of his still life paintings.
He always displayed a deep interest in the available
material and was conscientious in studying it, no
matter whether it involved folk culture, urban folklore
or illustration, documentary and collecting activities.
This thirst for knowledge is depicted by the heart of the
monument – the library with a selection of his books.
The newly renovated rectory garden next to the building
will also be opened to the public as of the aforementioned
date. We are looking forward to your visit.
The Černá Studnice Ridge conceals
its secrets…
Muchov
Muchov (787 m above sea level) is a popular place
on the Černá Studnice Ridge, perhaps because it is
the most distinctive peak on the ridge. It consists
of a relatively extensive group of cliffs rising from
boulder rubble and it forms a natural lookout point.
A straightened ridge track cleared from the stones
by the Jablonec Mountain Association before the First
World War passes over the rugged peak. A pleasant
mountain chalet belonging to the Czechoslovak Hiking
Club stood in the saddle under Muchov in the direction
of Černá Studnice from 1924. It burnt down in 1937
and attentive visitors can make out the remains
of the building’s foundations in the shadow of the forest.
The peak itself, which once included a metal
telecommunications repeater tower, provides a beautiful
view of Smržovka and the Tanvald Basin framed
by the Jizera Mountains in the north and the valley
of the Lower Kamenice with Velké Hamry and Plavy
on the southern side. It is possible to see the massif
of the Černá Studnice Ridge, the Giant Mountains
and the mountainous panorama towards the inland area
from there. Its interestingly shaped stones consist of mica
granite known as Tanvald granite. (The processing of high
quality crystalline granite on the Černá Studnice Ridge
gave employment to many local stonemasons in the past.
It is well known that the foundation stones for the
National Theatre come from there). Some local scribes
considered Muchov to be part of the old defensive and
signalling system of the Upper Jizera Mountains area.
Several versions concerning the origins of the name
Muchov have been preserved. According to one
of them, monks were accommodated at the former
“Hamry Court” and the court and its properties were
known as “Mnichov” (according to the Czech word
“mnich” which means “monk”) at that time. Muchov
then kept this name, albeit in a slightly modified form.
The second version is especially popular with children.
It states that the ruler of the Jizera Mountains, Muhu,
lives there. The peak’s name is therefore derived from
his name which he received from the lord of the Giant
Mountains, the Krakonoš, and the ruler of the Eagle
Mountains, Rampušák. They were inspired by the
mysterious hooting of the owls on the Černá Studnice
Ridge, “muhuuu”. The third variant is the simplest;
apparently the peak received its name from the flies

From the Jizera Mountains to the Bohemian
Paradise in the footsteps of the Scheybals
The Jana and Josef V. Scheybal Teaching Trail bears
the name of two significant local ethnographers,
whose legacy extends far beyond the boundaries
of the Liberec Region. It is 20.5 km long and it
connects to different regions, i.e. the harsh Jizera
Mountains, where Josef V. Scheybal was born, and
the Bohemian Paradise, where his future career began.
The trail has a total of 25 stations and two sections.
The first leads through areas which offer magical
views of Jablonec nad Nisou and the Jizera Mountains
and panoramas of the Ještěd Ridge and Pelíkovice.
The second section will take you from the Kopanina
It has been possible to encounter products marked
as a Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains
at markets and fairs, including markets associated with
Christmas and Easter or traditional fairs such as Saint
Anne’s Fair in Jizerka or the Marian Fair in Kristiánov,
since autumn 2010. The logo has also slowly begun
to become established at a number of farmers’
markets in the Liberec Region and it has even begun
to appear in Prague. Thanks to an initiative by a number
of producers, it has also been possible to purchase these
products in shops marked with the Jizera Mountains
logo since 2012: there are two such shops in Smržovka,
one in Oldřichov v Hájích and one in Liberec-Harcov.
What does the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains
logo mean? It guarantees that the product comes
from the area of the Jizera Mountains and is often also
(in Czech, “mouchy”) which like to warm up on its rocks
in the sun. It was also said of Muchov that a treasure
trove in the middle of the cliff opens up and offers up
its treasures at noon on the Feast of Saint John and also
on Christmas Eve. According to legend, a band of robbers
once had their hideout on Muchov and they hid a huge
booty in the rocks under the surface and then left it
there when they eventually decided to leave.
In any case, it is a magical place and it affects those who
are sensitive to the phenomena which exist between
heaven and earth with positive energy.
Líba Novotná
Muhu
I don’t know about you, but I have not taken the legend
of the benevolent spirit of the Jizera Mountains
living on Muchov to heart. I grew up with the Devil’s
Doctor by Mr Mikolášek and as such I took the entire
Muhu myth as being poetic licence. Later, I realised
that the tales of the spirit Muhu came from the pen
of a teacher, Mr Lhota, from Zásada and I simply took
them to be fairy tales. I did not sense the core of folk
literature in them. And I still do not sense it, so Muhu
ceased to interest me. For me, he became a kind of not
overly successful attempt at creating a Jizera Mountain
counterpart of the Krakonoš. Even at that time,
the Jizera Mountains were not very distant from the
Giant Mountains and as such the Krakonoš could have
jumped over here, if it had been necessary.
It was not until years later that I came across the demon
Muhu again when I met with the collecting activities
of Mr Joseph Meissner, specifically with his book “Sage
und Brauch aus dem Isergebirge” dating from 1912.
Mr Meissner mentions him in the chapter entitled
“Die Waldgeister” (Forest Spirits). And he referred to
an even older source, which is Adolf Benda’s book entitled
“Geschichte der Stadt Gablonz und ihrer Umgebung”
dating from 1877 where the entire legend of “Der Muhu”
appears. By the way, there is not one word about Muchov
in the nine pages of text. At the bottom of the legend,
lookout tower through the significant attractions
of the Bohemian Paradise up to the Dlask Farm
in Dolánky u Turnova.
It was officially opened on 18th May 2013. The trail
is marked with the symbol of a teaching trail
and it is suitable for all age categories.

made from local materials and that it has been produced
with a large share of manual work and without any
destructive influence on the local environment. In other
words, the products bear the imprint of this beautiful
part of the world. In 2013, this logo can be found
on more than fifty products or groups of products.
These include a wide range of food and drinks and
products made from natural materials: wood, paper,
beeswax, textiles, metal, ceramics and glass. You
can find them all at www.jizerske-vyrobky.cz which
contains a catalogue of all the products and current
news about where you can purchase them. It is possible
to obtain a catalogue in the form of a map or a brochure
from the tourist information centres and especially
from the individual producers themselves.
A new feature in 2013 involves the expansion
of the territory where the logo applies. Producers
from the Lower Giant Mountains area can now also
register for the logo. The Regional Product of the Jizera
Mountains brand therefore now also fills the territory
between its neighbours, i.e. the logos for the area of
the Bohemian Paradise, the Lusatian Mountains and the
Mácha area and the Giant Mountains. We are therefore
looking forward to a wide range of local delicacies
and interesting products from the Liberec Region!
there is a small footnote by Mr Benda: “There is a cliff
near Tanvald which is called Muhu.” I do not know how
he came up with this, because Muchov has always
been designated as Muchow in the old documents
and on old maps (including in German sources).
Only Hubler’s guidebook dating from 1903 designates it
as “Fliegenstein” or “Fly Peak”, which is somewhat close
to the truth in my personal experience. Just try and climb
to the top on a warm summer’s day! And the claim that
Muhu is an old Slav god also does not hold water. I have
studied Slav myths in sufficient detail and I have never
found him there. I have also not found him in Celtic
mythology which is so popular nowadays.
So, it is entirely up to you, if you believe that Muhu lives
on Muchov.

Do you know Amelanchier?
The fruit of the Amelanchier plant (known in Czech
as “muchovník”) contains large amounts of vitamin
C, B12 and other vitamins, beneficial anthocyanin
dyes and valuable minerals. It supports an organism’s
immunity, has a preventative effect on stomach illnesses
and can be taken as a dietary supplement in the case
of oncological illnesses. Moreover, it has an excellent
taste and wonderful juice can be pressed from it. Tea
made from the dried leaves is used to cure stomach
and intestinal difficulties and to purge the system.
