Third government action plan arising from the 1995 interdepartmental policy on domestic violence, entitled Preventing, Detecting, Ending Conjugal Violence. Nine signatory departments and three signatory agencies have made 135 commitments, 87 of which are new. Government responsibility in addressing domestic violence The action plan is aimed at ensuring the safety of victims of domestic violence and the children exposed to it and better control of persons who exhibit violent behaviour in domestic situations. Co-responsibility: Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and Minister of Justice It is also aimed at specifically meeting the needs of First Nations and Inuit people. A section devoted to their needs is included in the action plan (35 measures). Numerous commitments aimed specifically at people living in situations that make them vulnerable to domestic violence, including elderly women, women with a disability, immigrant women, women from cultural communities, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and transgender women as well as male victims of domestic violence. Six information brochures developed by the Secrétariat à la condition féminine for people living in situations that make them vulnerable to domestic violence. All the action plan’s commitments are aimed at reaching specific objectives and are based on four main components: prevention, detection, adaptation to specific realities and psychosocial, police, judicial and correctional intervention.
