Chenal
Country Club
has the honor
of hosting the
Southern golf Association as the SgA
enters the 111th year of existence with its
premier event, the 106th Southern Amateur
Championship. the championship will be
played on Chenal’s Bear den course July 1821. As has become a routine feature of the
tournament, the field will include many amateurs ranked among the top players in the
u.S. and the world.
to illustrate today’s broad reach of the
championship, it is interesting to note that
the 2011 Southern Amateur at innisbrook
resort in florida included players from 33
states and 9 foreign countries.
As many as 600 entries are now received each year for the Southern Amateur.
the field is then pared down to 168 through
exemptions for the most accomplished players, and a series of 20 local qualifiers scattered throughout the south and a few other
states. A national qualifier will be held at
Chenal on monday, July 16, of tournament
week to give as many entries as possible an
extra shot at a berth in the field.
While other amateur events seek to attract players with lavish gifts and perks from
corporate sponsors, the SgA Board of directors voted to continue its practice of simply putting on a first-class tournament in the
true spirit of amateurism: stroke play with
roving rules officials. this traditional formula
has resulted in rising respect for the Southern Amateur. As a result of the commitment
to valued tradition, in 2004 golf icon Arnold
palmer began extending a sponsor exemption for the reigning Southern Amateur
Champion into the pgA tour Arnold palmer
invitational at Bay hill. (this year will mark
the first time since the enticement was offered that the exemption will go unused because reigning 2011 champion, harris english
of Sea island, georgia,
turned pro and earned
his playing card on the
pgA tour. english currently ranks 55th on the
tour in money leaders, with over
$800,000 in earnings. his best finish so far
in 2012 was a fifth-place tie at the Crowne
plaza invitational at Colonial in ft. Worth.)
little rock ’s own Alex Carpenter, who plays
out of Chenal, was the winner of the 2010
Southern Amateur held at Shoal Creek in
Birmingham.
in addition to Carpenter and english,
past winners include such notables as Bobby
Jones, freddie haas, gay Brewer, Billy Joe
patton, hubert green, vinny giles, lanny
Wadkins, Ben Crenshaw, Bill rogers, Bob
tway, Justin leonard, and current rising pgA
tour stars Webb Simpson and Kyle Stanley.
the Southern Amateur annually travels
about the south, gracing some of the country’s most prestigious courses. recent venues
have included the homestead, the honors
Course, Shoal Creek, Country Club of Birmingham, Colonial Country Club in memphis, Country Club of north Carolina at
pinehurst, lake nona, east lake golf
Club in Atlanta, and the dunes in myrtle
Beach.
Although this will be the championship’s first appearance at Chenal, the
little rock club hosted the Southern
Junior Championship in 2007. the 40th
Junior was be played this year at pinehurst.
the Southern Junior is carving its own glowing legacy, also attracting top players from the
u.S. and foreign countries. Winners include
Justin leonard (twice) and Charles howell
(three times).
As part of the Southern Amateur legacy, the ornamental george
W. Adair memorial trophy carries
the inscription of the name of each
year’s champion on its base. the
first name on the trophy is that
of robert t. Jones, Jr. thought
by many to be the most artistic
golf trophy in the united States,
the gorham Silver Company in
providence, rhode island, man-
ufactured this priceless trophy in the early
1920s. Bobby Jones’ name was inscribed in
1922.
At an overall height of 44 inches, the
trophy is urn-shaped in the classical revival
style. the handles of the trophy are two figural angels holding laurel wreaths. the
domed lid is surmounted with an eagle finial.
the cup stands on a monumental silver base,
not original to the cup, featuring two figural
golfers – one male, one female. the total silver weight of the trophy is 364 troy ounces
(24.9 pounds). While the trophy is housed at
the robert t. Jones, Jr., room of the Atlanta
Athletic Club, it currently resides in the
Champions hallway at the Chenal Country
Club, and will be on display during this year’s
championship.
the SgA is run by a 40-member Board
of directors who are devoted to golf. many
of them have earned high scores from the
uSgA for their rules proficiency. they serve
unselfishly without pay and without reimbursement for travel expenses to
SgA events. the current board
president is tommy
Culp, a decorated
houston businessman
and former Smu golfer.
the Association and
its events are administered by a small professional staff, headed by
executive Secretary Buford mcCarty, and based
in Birmingham, Alabama.

Alex Carpenter is returning to the Southern
Amateur Championship as a winner. not only did
Alex, who plays out of Chenal Country Club, win
the 2010 Southern Amateur at Shoal Creek in
Birmingham, he has continued to win, thus re-writing the ACu golf record book – in just two seasons!
As a junior Wildcat at Abilene Christian university in Abilene, texas, Alex has won a schoolrecord 15 tournament titles in just 24 career
starts. his single-season scoring average of 70.89
in 2010-2011 is the lowest single-season scoring
average in ACu histor y. Carpenter won six
straight tournaments in 2010-2011, the last four
tournaments of the fall and the first two of the
spring. he won the Jack nicklaus Award and the
phil mickelson Award as the nCAA division ii
player of the year and one of the top golfers in division ii. Alex also helped the united States team
defeat europe 13-11 in the palmer Cup, among
other numerous recognitions and achievements.
little rock and Chenal have a lot to be proud
of in Alex Carpenter. he exemplifies the true qual-
ities of a first-class American amateur, not only by
winning, but by conducting himself in a manner befitting a true champion.
Commenting on the 106th Southern Amateur
Championship in which he will again compete, Alex
noted, “Winning any championship is a great thrill.
But winning the prestigious Southern Amateur is
a big step toward establishing a career in competitive golf. not only is the Southern Am in the top
five amateur championships in the nation, it’s 72
holes of stroke play with a cut at 36, making the
competition truly meaningful.”
excellent amateur golf will be witnessed at
Chenal Country Club July 18-21. members of the
public galleries will need to look no further than
the outstanding play of Alex Carpenter, a true competitor. in fact, Alex said it best in a recent video
produced to help recruit fellow amateurs to the
championship: “it’s all about the competition,” Alex
said. “And the best competition and best golfing experience is at the Southern Am. it’s a highly ranked,
professionally run, and nationally acclaimed event!”
After qualifying for the Southern Amateur in
dramatic fashion, sinking a birdie putt on the first
hole of a playoff, matt will have the opportunity to
now play in the tournament on the course he grew
up on. the first time his dad took him to play golf
was when he was three years old. But he didn’t really get serious about golf until junior high. And he’s
been going strong ever since. he actually made his
only hole-in-one when he was in 7th grade during
a tournament practice round in dallas. he plays
everyday, or at least every day that he can.
matt is a rising sophomore the university of
tulsa, and is a member of the golf team. this year,
his team made the nCAA national Championship,
but fell shor t of winning the title. that experience, along with his participation in the fCWt
national Championships when he was 15, gives
him the familiarity of playing in a big tournament.
After a little thought, he would have to say his
favorite professional golfer is ernie els. Why, because his is always cool and calm, and so smooth
and relaxed. having attended the pgA Championship at Southern hills a few years back, matt can
definitely see what it takes to compete in a major.
And he is up to the task for the Southern Am.
“hosting the Southern Am in little rock is a
huge deal for Ar kansas golf, and especially
Chenal. And it is a great opportunity for me to
play my home course,” matt says. he will know several of the other contenders, some of whom he
has competed against in the past. And he is looking
forward to a great week of great golf here at
Chenal for the Southern Am.
As the reigning men’s Club Champion, Shawn
received an automatic exemption to play in the
Southern Amateur Championship. this will be his
first amateur tournament to play in, and he is excited and honored that Chenal and the Southern
Am Committee has allowed him to compete in
such a prestigious tournament.
Shawn began playing golf in his early 20’s with
a couple of friends, and really loved the competition. he didn’t like losing, so he worked hard on his
game. it took about 10 years before he could shoot
in the 70s, and a few more before he got that first
under par round.
Shawn has been a member of Chenal for 10
years. he tries to play at least twice a week with
friends here, and he has developed many great
friendships at the Club, so there’s always someone
to play a competitive round with. Although too
many to choose from, one of his favorite holes
would have to be founders #9, with the sun setting
and the Clubhouse in the background. Shawn has
racked up six hole-in-ones, and a double eagle. he
has aced every par three on founders from the
back tees, and double-eagled #9. he is still looking
for that first one on Bear den.
on Wednesday, July 18, Shawn will be competing with 167 of some of the best amateur players
around. patrick Boyd will be his caddie, and with
any luck, maybe he’ll get that first ace on Bear den!

voluteer Spotlight
vic Jacuzzi
Chuck marlin
volunteer Chairman,
Scoring and Standard Bearers
volunteer Chairman,
if you ask vic what his favorite hole at Chenal is,
he’ll tell you it’s Bear den #15. Why? Because of
the picturesque environment surrounding the
hole. With woods on one side and the lake on
the other, it’s also pretty challenging. But playing
golf three to four times a week will definitely give
him a lot of practice.
vic has been a member at Chenal since 1999. he has seen many changes, and
also some exciting times here at the Club. in 2007, Chenal hosted the Southern
Junior Championship. this event, somewhat of a stepping-stone to hosting the
Southern Amateur, brought in many great juniors from around the South and the
country. vic played a big role in coordinating all of the volunteers for that tournament, which is part of the reason he volunteered to Chair one of the committees for the Southern Am. one of the big take-aways from the Southern Junior
for him was the fact that so many of the players and guests were genuinely impressed with Chenal Country Club. people came from all over, and they had very
nice compliments about the Club, staff, facilities and the course. he says hosting
the Southern Am is a way to share that experience again with more people. And
Bear den will definitely show some great challenges as well.
vic didn’t really get serious about playing golf until after he retired. he attended
the uS open at pinehurst several years ago, and raved about what a great experience he had. he has traveled around on many golf trips, and really enjoyed
his visits. But, in his opinion, Chenal is a great experience as well. And it’s always
nice to get back home and play your own courses.
registration, grounds,
Spotters
and Shuttle Cart drivers
Chuck may not have volunteered
for a major tournament in the past,
but he certainly can appreciate
what it takes to host such a big
event. having attended several majors, including the masters, St. Jude Classic in memphis, and most
recently, the Curtis Cup in Scotland, Chuck has traveled the world
to watch some great golf. he has also had the opportunity to play
some of the best courses in the world. While in Scotland, he played
royal Aberdeen golf Club, royal dornoch golf Club, Cruden Bay
golf Club, and Carnoustie. it was a totally enjoyable experience,
but it’s always good to come back home.
Chuck has been a member at Chenal for 12 years. he plays golf
four days a week, and has a whopping seven hole-in-ones! he
made one on a monster day here at Chenal, the only hole-in-one
ever at a monster day event. his favorite hole would have to be
Bear den #11. it’s challenging, yet fun to play.
When asked about his thoughts on the Southern Amateur,
Chuck says that it is a great opportunity to showcase the hospitality
of the people from Arkansas in a great golf setting. people from
around the world will be welcome here, and he hopes they will
enjoy it as much as we do.
Janinne riggs,
play three to four times a week
Janinne sees the Southern Amateur as an opportunity for members and the community to see
some excellent golf. “there will be international
golfers here, among our own golfers, and i’m sure
we’ll see some of the names pop-up on the pgA
tour in the future. there is nothing better than
seeing an amazing golf hit and amazing shot in
person.”
most recently, Janinne volunteered at the St.
Jude Classic in memphis. Wednesday was pro-Am
day, and she was a walking scorer. She had Justin
leonard’s group. this was especially exciting because not only had she followed his entire career
(Justin is a texas longhorn, and Steve went to law
school at texas), but Justin is the 1992 and 1993
Southern Amateur Champion. What a thrill, and
such a coincidence to have a former two-time
champion in her group! Janinne doesn’t know who
the 2012 Champion will be, but she might just see
him at a major tournament in the future.
volunteer Chairman,
player housing
volunteering at major golf tournaments is a old
hat for Janinne. She has been a walking scorer at
the St. Jude Classic for four years, run the laser gun
at the phoenix open for the past eight or so
years, and she has volunteered at several tournaments on the Champions tours. So it was not a
far stretch for Janinne to not only volunteer for
the Southern Amateur, but also to chair one the
committees. “volunteering is just part of golf,” she
says. “golf gives back so much to the communities
where tournaments are played, it’s just natural to
want to be part of that as well.”
Janinne and her husband Steve have been
members at Chenal for 12 years. her favorite hole
would have to be Bear den #6. it is not extremely
long, but it is challenging to get over the creek and
onto the green in one. Janinne has been lucky
enough to have made two hole-in-ones, on
founders #11, and at the first tee. She tries to

Wyn norWood
Amateur golf in Arkansas will be further
enhanced by the hosting of the 106th Southern Amateur Championship here at Chenal
Country Club. And one of the reasons amateur golf thrives in our state is Wyn norwood.
Wyn norwood retired this year as university of Arkansas a little rock director of
golf and head men’s golf Coach. A five-time
Sun Belt Conference Coach of the year, norwood has led uAlr to four Sun Belt Championships and coached three SBC individual
medalists.
A 2001 inductee into the Arkansas golf
hall of fame, norwood spent the first 13
years of his uAlr career as the head coach for both the men's and women's
golf programs. he wasted little time in making his presence felt at uAlr, receiving the Sun Belt Coach of the year award for both men's and women's
golf in 1994.the 1994 Coach of the year awards marked the first of five norwood has won, as he was also named Women's Coach of the year in 1998
and 1999, and men's Coach of the year in 2001.
norwood 's guidance has led the trojans to four Sun Belt Conference
championships, with the women's team claiming back-to-back titles in 1998
and 1999, and the men's squad winning consecutive championships in 2000
and 2001. plus, Wyn’s own excellence on the course has twice won him the
Arkansas Amateur State golf Championship, while has also been selected as
the Arkansas Amateur golfer of the year on two occasions.
Wyn is one of the reasons the Southern golf Association chose Chenal
for this prestigious championship. As a long-time member and former president of the SgA board, Wyn has also shared his expertise as president of the
Arkansas State golf Association and the mid-South golf Association, and has
served as a committee member with the united States golf Association.
in his own words, Wyn described the selection of Chenal for the Southern Am. “As a director of the Southern golf Association for over 30 years i
have had the opportunity to see this great event played on some of the finest
courses in the united States. i felt the state of Arkansas deserved an opportunity to host the Southern Amateur and what better place than little rock
and Chenal Country Club. the site committee made several visits to Chenal
and after the Southern Jr. Amateur was held here, they were convinced that
Chenal was prepared to host the historic championship.”
Chenal is prepared for the Southern Am. And we have Wyn norwood
to thank.
