young children, we decided to pick up the pace! The
lyrics, which are in Spanish with a heavy African
accent, promise a party to the baby if she goes to

who would play music on crates

Guararey de Pastorita

Victor introduced us to this highly rhythmic music. It’s no surprise that Cuba is responsible
for yet another musical sensation: changüi. Victor plays the tres, a small Cuban guitar with
three double-sets of strings. This is the Cuban version of singing ‘round the campfire.

Though written in Canada, a Brasilian samba feel provides the basis for this tune. Scott is playing the Brasilian pandeiro, a cross between a hand drum and a tambourine.

When we heard this song for the first time, we knew we had to play it. The soothing groove and
beautiful Portuguese melody are just the right combination of rhythm and harmony.
La múcura

Latin Folk music deals with every day life, and this song is no exception. The entire song is about
a girl who drops the jar she was carrying on her head. Pair this with the infectious Colombian
cumbia rhythm, and you’ve got a hit.
Casamiento de negros
Cachimbo | Chile | VIOLETA PARRA 2:43
This Chilean song, by world-renowned composer Violeta Parra, is both dark
and humorous. It talks about a black wedding – the people, food, clothing,
weather, and surroundings are all black! The song also references African
slaves in Colonial Chile.
Yuma feat. Jimmy Greene

“Yuma” is a Cuban word that labels foreigners and returning Cubans who visit
their home country and show off the wealth they have acquired by living abroad.
Many Cubans do not have this opportunity, and creatively invent ways to thrive
with what they have.

When Amber asked Rodrigo if he had any lyrics or poetry he could contribute to the project, she wasn’t expecting so many words! “Don’t give up” is
the sentiment behind the song – feel free to sing along.
Oh my soul

We are always sharing music, introducing each other to artists
and widening our spheres of influence. In this case, Scott had
sent Amber a funky Brasilian song to check out, and rather
than cover the song, she decided to write one instead. The
result is a song about acting upon what you know deep in
your soul.
Inolvidable / Open Eyes
Rumba / Afro-Cuban 6/8 | Cuba / Canada | JULIO GUTIERREZ / AMBER EPP 3:22
Cubans would call this a ‘popuri’, a mixture of styles and songs. “Inolvidable” is
originally a bolero (Latin ballad), but we put it on top of a rumba groove. Rumba music
is traditionally limited to voice and percussion. We added the guitar for the second half
to put our own little spin on it.
Yerbero moderno

Celia Cruz was one of Cuba’s best musical exports. She sang like nobody’s business, and was
famous for her strong, defiant voice and her ‘pregones’ (improvised calls). Her version of “The
Modern Herb-Seller” is a big influence on us.

One of the most beautiful boleros in the Cuban repertoire, “With you in the distance” is a romantic ballad that declares that nothing in the world is beautiful if your love is not there by your
side.
Samba de Amber

“Amber’s Samba” features the popular rhythm from Brasil that makes us think of
warm beaches and cool caipirinhas. Listen closely and you’ll hear the cuica, a highpitched percussion instrument (which Scott likes to call “the monkey”).
