Safety & Security Task Force Update Since September, we have pulled together a task force to review and improve Safety and Security at FBC. Some of the actions the task force has already taken include: • Added a security officer to our Sunday mornings who patrols the building and the parking lots during both worship hours • Added two more video cameras to the five already in place. Cameras are monitored and video is archived for 60 days • Cameras can be monitored from multiple places • Had our insurance provider conduct a risk assessment review • Had an independent security consultant to conduct a risk assessment review The task force has divided into three groups and enlisted other members with security and medical backgrounds to assist us as we review our plans and policies to make other improvements. Those three groups will be working on Policies and Safety of Minors, Fire Evacuations and Natural Disasters, and Emergency Responses involving EMS/Police. P What is Unique about Attendance? ictures are worth a thousand words and statistics always tell a story but sometimes that story can be misleading. In church life we count a lot: the offering, attendance, acres and square feet, baptisms…you get the point. Unfortunately, tracking numbers only tells part of the story. At First Baptist we count a lot of things, but we also ask a lot of questions. If you spend a minute looking at the chart below, you might be concerned about the flat and declining trend in our overall Sunday School attendance; we are too. However, we asked some questions that led to us counting something else: unique attenders. A unique attender is a person who attended Sunday School at least one time in a given month. Remember that month when you had a business trip, a vacation, and a family illness and only made it to Sunday School one time? That month you counted as one unique attender. Another month, with less life distractions, you made Sunday School four weeks in a row! Yep, you counted as one unique attender that month too. For example, one class had 37 people attend their class in January of 2016, but only averaged 23 per week. This is a pretty common trend at FBC. What this means for us is that we are growing in the number of individuals who attend Sunday School during any given month. You see, all of the lines of culture norms have been blurred or erased and Sunday is no longer a sacred day for many people. Our younger families are pulled by commitments every weekend. Whether it is extracurricular activities, personal hobbies, business travel, or visiting other family members, there are a lot of commitments calling for the attention of our younger families. On the other end of the age spectrum, more and more people are caring for their aging parents longer, and often times, at a distance. Our families, who may be enjoying the empty nest and the freedoms it provides, are also investing in their commitment to care for their aging family members as well as connecting with their grandchildren. Both are incredibly important commitments. What we learn from these statistics is that the people of First Baptist are absolutely a committed people! Thank you for your commitment to this church and the Lord! We know that there are a lot of commitments calling for your attention all the time. My encouragement is to keep your priorities in line. Your top two priorities should always be your personal relationship with God and then your family. Everything else follows.
