Letting yourself take by the beats of the Serrano river to explore rivers, lakes and glaciers from the National Park Torres Paine to the southernmost point of the Southern Ice Field, is the maximum invitation for the travelling dared one, which is not contented with catching the landscape only in a photography, but hopes to be protagonist of a unique and unrepeatable history, in the middle of hipnotic places. Grey and Serrano rivers Expedition Three Days Self supported three days expedition that starts in the National Park Torres del Paine, and after exploring beautiful lakes, rivers and glaciers, ends at the National Park Bernardo O’Higgins, southernmost point of the Patagonian Ice Field. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Passengers will meet their guides at Rutaspagatonia’s operation base located in the Serrano river sector, natural limit of the National Park Torres del Paine. At this fully equiped rustic cabin passengers will go through the program and itinerary and receive their personal equipment. Guides will also work with passengers on safety and rescue techniques that are obligatory for those who want to feel the Serrano river, which is the largest river in Magallanes that forms part of an interconnected system of rivers and lakes that drain the Paine mountain range and flows towards the end of the southern Patagonian ice field. DAY 1: Early in the morning we will head to the Grey lake to kayak between millennial icebergs that have deta- ched from the Grey glacier, the principal neck of ice of the southern Patagonian icefield in Torres del Paine, and then start descending the 26 km of the Grey river, from where it starts in the lake down to the Serrano river sector. DAY 2: We start descending the Serrano River, the view of Torres del Paine will acompany us until we reach the Serrano waterfall. From there we will have on our sight the Donoso mountain where we will start paddleling the most expost area to the winds of the Patagonian ice field. The wind will determine our camping site; most likely we will be camping at the Tyndall lookout point where we will be able to look at a distance the imposing glacier. DAY 3: We will leave behind our campsite and head towards the mouth of the river Serrano on the Puerto Toro’s sector located in the National Park Bernardo O’Higgins. The places where we will be paddleling are silent, unexplored, diverse, beautiful and pristine. Visiting Balmaceda glacier, which falls directly to the sea from the Balmaceda mountain in the National park Bernardo O’Higgins, marks the end of our paddleling. We will take a small hike towards the wall of Serrano glacier and then we will take a boatride, with our kayaks and equipment, in a large tourist boat back to Puerto Natales. This program can be implemented as an extension of a trekking program. From Tyndall’s lookout point to the mouth of the river on the Puerto Toro’s sector located in the National Park Bernardo O’Higgins, the landscape will be diverse, beautiful and pristine. DAY 4: Visiting Balmaceda glacier, which falls directly to the sea from the Balmaceda mountain in the National park Bernardo O’Higgins, marks the end of our paddleling. This horse ride will go through hardly vissible animal tracks on the river banks of the Gaike river. KAYAKING DAY 9 (AM): We will continue descending the river towards the mouth of the river Serrano on the Puerto Toro’s sector located in the National Park Bernardo O’Higgins. The places where we will be paddleling are silent, unexplored, diverse, beautiful and pristine. Visiting Balmaceda glacier, which falls directly to the sea from the Balmaceda mountain, in the National park Bernardo O’Higgins, marks the end of our paddleling. We will take a small hike towards the wall of Serrano glacier. SAILING DAY 9 (PM): We will take a boatride, with our kayaks and equipment, in a large tourist boat back to Puerto Natales. This is an historic navegation from the time of the colonization going through the Señoret channel and Seno de Última Esperanza. A private transfer will be waitng to take the passengers to their hotel. FAREWELL DINNER To share the best moments of this 10 days expedition there’s nothing better than a good chilenian wine. Located in the southern extreme of America, in the Strait of Magallanes, with an extension of water and land of 67,000 hectares, the park elevates its importance as being part of the biological corridor of the humpback whale (Megaptera novaengliae) which year alter year comes during the austral summer to feed in the zone, where the conjuction of Currents of the Pacific and Atlantic generates a great abundance of food, besides offering space to a great number of marine species, like Whales, Sea lions, Elephant seals, Penguins, and Cormorants among other bird species. The Marine Park also displays a unique landscape diversity of mountains, forests, coastal areas and glaciers of ininmaginable beauty. Rutaspatagonia, has developed two alternatives of Expedition in Kayak to sight Humpback Whales and to delight our visitors with its incredible songs from the quiet perspective of the most ecological of recreational navigations. Itinerary Previous to the Program Contact with passengers in their lodging for Program review and itineraries, marine regulation, departure, insurances, personal equipment. DAY 1: Day One of Program begins with the matinal terrestrial transfer of passengers, guides and equipment from Punta Arenas to Bahía Mansa where a boat will take us towards hostería Faro de San Isidro in a route of 20 minutes of navigation. The sector is called Aguila bay, place where in the pioneerig time a whale factory existed, same whales that we protect today. After having lunch we will dedicate the rest of the day to practice kayaking skills and kayak rescue tecniques, making a short excursion by the surroundings. Lodging and dinner in the Hostería. DAY 2: The “Esturion” is a coastal yacht of 15 Mts. of length equipped with kitchen and staterooms, special for the navigation in the Austral Channels of the Patagonia. During the following 7 hours we will sail by the mythical Strait of Magallanes with the bow oriented towards Carlos III island. We will have lunch while enjoying the beautiful and unexplored landscape with the inspiration of stories and legends of famous navigators, ruthless privateers or nomads of the sea with their ancestral route and knowledge. Bording the coast of the Brunswick peninsula until arriving to the southernmost point of the American continent, indicated with the geographic landmark of the Froward cross, the navigation continues by the Strait towards the Pacific with a view of the imposing Darwin´s Mountain range in Tierra del Fuego. The Whalesound Base on Carlos III island awaits us. There, we will go through its facilities and in the Whale Observatory some scientists will offer an interesting talk on the Park, Flora, Marine Fauna and studies on the humpback whale. Kayak and navigation equipment preparation for the exploration from the Whalesound Base to Ruppert island, a small rocky promontory where the penguin of Magallanes nests. During the route the presence of the humpback whale is appraised, as well as their songs With the use of our hydrophones. Sea lions and Cormorants accompany our journey while we enjoy of the landscape that surrounds us. We return to the Whalesound Base, take a repairing lunch and rest to initiate the second route of kayak by the bays of the Carlos III island. DAY 4: On board of the “Esturion”, we take our kayaks and personal kayak equipment towards the Seno Balle- na, disembarking in a protected bay. In this spectacular site surrounded by cliffs, we will organize the exploration towards the ventisquero of Santa Ines, where we will approximate by kayak to the wall of the glacier to admire the magnitude of the great snow-white Ice Field. The always present marine fauna during the summer season accompanies our route and does not stop surprising us. In the afternoon the Esturion picks us up to start our nocturnal navigation towards Punta Arenas. Dinner on board. No trip will be cancelled because of adverse weather conditions but there could be modifications on the itinerary made by the guide to guarantee the passengers safety and enjoyment. All of the reservations must come with the following information: Name and Surname, Passport number, Nacionality, Birth date, Height, Weight, Medical restrictions and Food preferences. They must indicate where are they spending the night so the guides can contact them. The excursion activates a personal insurance for adventure activities. One guide will go with a maximum of 4 passengers. The maximum of people in an excursion will be 16 passengers and 4 guides. The excursion includes the following equipment for passengers and guides: safety equipment (life jacket (PFD), flotation line, water pump, paddle float, rescue and tow line, extra paddle); personal equipment (waterresistant jacket, neoprene wet suit 3 MM with zipper, neoprene spray skirt, neoprene booties and poagies); VHF communication equipment; first aid kit.
